The bear reaches the North Pole
Berndorf Bäderbau supports the Austrian extreme athlete and apnoea diver Christian Redl in
his activities.
His latest adventure: On 13 April 2015, he dived down to a depth of 30 metres in the Arctic at
the North Pole without compressed air. His motivation: To draw attention to this world in a
puristic manner and without aids, as well as to sound out and overcome mental and physical
limits.
Berndorf, March 2015: The traditional Austrian company Berndorf Bäderbau becomes the latest and
only Austrian sponsor of Christian Redl, extreme athlete and world record holder in various diving
categories.
"Berndorf Bäderbau took the opportunity to raise awareness of the situation for the polar bear, which is
also the mascot of our company. Raising awareness of this problem and its effects is the connection
between Berndorf Bäderbau and Christian Redl“, Karl Narbeshuber, managing director of Berndorf
Bäderbau emphasises.
Christian Redl is pleased about his only Austrian sponsor: "Extreme athletes are characterised by their
high level of commitment along with careful attention to safety, perfectionism and creativity. These are
characteristics that connect me with the company philosophy and brand of Berndorf Bäderbau."
April 2015 - Expedition under the sign of the polar bear - "Below Thirty" project
Christian Redl took on the challenge of the "Below Thirty" project together with the Australian
photographer and diver, Marcus Fillinger. The pair wanted to be the first people to have dived at all
three poles. Their aim is to dive to a depth of 30 metres at minus 30°C. The pair took to their icy
missions outfitted with the most important equipment.
After months of preparation, the two left for Svalbard/Spitzbergen for 4 days at the start of April to
prepare for the exciting challenge. On 11th April, they set out for their camp at the North Pole, the
Russian base Barneo.
After several attempts, on 13th April, Christian Redl succeeded with the most successful and exciting
dive to a depth of 30 metres for 1 minute under ice with a thickness of 1.80 m.
The water temperature of minus 2°C and the outdoor temperature of minus 30°C were two of the
greatest challenges due to the wetsuit being just 5 mm thick.
In Redl's own words: The seabed is at a depth of more than 2,000 metres. You dive into black
uncertainty. It's not until you come up that you're able to perceive the peculiarities and the range of
colours from green and light to black. It was definitely one of my best underwater experiences."
Christian Redl's aim was not just to set another world record; rather, his main focus was to highlight
the wonderful Arctic world and it's problems, as it is a special habitat that is worth preserving.
"Below Thirty" will continue in March 2016 at the magnetic North Pole and in 2017 at the magnetic
South Pole.
