Services Life Enrichment Center
activities in two great locations:
ABOUT US
Since 1978, Fayette Senior Services, Inc., (FSS) an independent,
nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization, has been providing a wide array of life
-enriching services to Fayette County residents age 50 and better. Fayette
County, Georgia, is home to one of the fastest growing senior populations
in metro Atlanta – and the age 60+ population segment is projected to grow
an astonishing 450% by 2040. This statistic alone makes our mission — to
make a meaningful difference in the emotional, social, and physical wellbeing of older adults — all the more critical. By fostering independence,
improving quality of life, and enhancing the community connection, the
programs and services we provide are an essential part of our community.
Not-for-profit FSS enjoys a unique public/private partnership with
Fayette County government. Through this agreement we provide a variety
of supportive services such as Meals On Wheels, Transportation, In-home
Personal Care/ Homemaker Services, Care Management, Information
Assistance, and more. We could not do that without our government
partners; however, we believe it is our responsibility to complement the
public support to ensure we can continue serving Fayette’s seniors for
generations to come. Therefore, we feel it’s important to note that less
than half of our revenue comes from sources other than federal, state,
and local governments.
Fayette Senior Services is recognized as a model of sustainability and
social entrepreneurship among peer organizations and nongovernment
funders. Although we are proud of this recognition, we could not do all
that we do without the support from charitable donors, Center members,
volunteers, grantees, and the community that so generously supports our
fundraising efforts.
The aging transition can be paved with a broad spectrum of challenges.
However, it can also prove to be rich with opportunities. The key to “aging
well” is knowledge. When it comes to addressing those unique needs,
Fayette Senior Services Life Enrichment Center is the one-stop shop for
empowering older adults to live well and age well.
Our Life Enrichment Center in Fayetteville is uniquely different from
traditional senior centers. Our beautiful facility is a vibrant place where
adults age 50+ come to socialize with friends, enjoy a great meal in our
Ultimate café, re-energize their bodies, exercise their minds, and lift their
spirits.
To make sure our programs and activities are within easy reach to more
seniors, we are proud to have established a community partnership with
the city of Peachtree City. We now offer many new programs and activities
in Peachtree City at the Gathering Place (next to “The Fred” Amphitheater)
and at our newest facility, McIntosh Place. We’re adding new classes and
activities each month during our expansion to PTC, so stay tuned for more!

When You Need a Little Help From Some Friends...
We offer supportive services that make a meaningful
difference in the emotional, social, and physical wellbeing of older adults by preserving their independence, improving their quality of life, and connecting
them to the community.
Meals On Wheels
Meals on Wheels is a needs-based program for
homebound, or semi-homebound, seniors who are
unable to provide themselves with regular nutritious
meals due to physical or financial challenges. The
service also connects homebound seniors to the
community through daily social contact, which also
helps to ensure their well-being.
Ani-Meals

AniMeals™ program is designed to give our Meals On

Miriam’s Fitness Corner
Question:
When exercising, what should my heart rate
be?
Answer:
There are many heart rate formulas out there. The
most popular being “220 minus your age”. Simply
take the number 220 and subtract from it your current
age. Then keep your heart rate at a minimum of
60% of that number and a maximum of 90% of same
number. For example, if you are a 70 year old adult
participating in cardiovascular activity, that number
for you would be 150. You would then multiply 150
x .90 to determine your max heart rate. In this case
it would be 135. To find your minimum heart rate
multiply 150 x .60 and voilà...here’s the number to
stay above. Most cardio equipment will calculate this
for you if you enter your age upon starting workout. If
you prefer a simpler method, use the RPE (Rating of
Perceived Exertion) scale. This means on a scale of
1 to 10, with 10 being the most intense, how hard are
you working? What is your body feeling? You’d then
determine that number. To challenge yourself, you
want to work up to 7 or 8 trying to not drop below 5.

Volunteer Spotlight
Volunteer Icon, Mary Frances Luysterbyrg
Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Mary Frances
Luysterbyrg lived in a single dwelling for the
duration of her pre-college years. She shared
the home with an older sister, an older brother,
a stay at home mom, and a father who was
a World War II machinist, preceding his blue
collar career in the steel industry.
Growing up, Mary attended Catholic
schools and was rooted in spirituality. She is
insightful and intuitive. With a remarkable will
to teach, she started a school simulation in the
basement of her home when she was seven or
eight years old and created learning materials
for her five to ten year old students. With 100
children living on her street, students were
plentiful.
Mary’s brother and sister enhanced
their classroom presentations and other skills
in Mary’s school. They in turn taught Mary
upper grade lessons. The school was safe,
intellectually stimulating, fun, warm, and
parents appreciated the learning opportunity for
their children.
Mary’s avid reading habit was an asset
for college studies. She earned a bachelor’s
and a master’s degree in education from the
10 | September 2016
By: Shirley Johnson
University of Cincinnati. Afterward, she served
as a Speech Pathologist and Audiologist in
Cincinnati for one year. This was followed by
four years of teaching children with behavioral
challenges. Autistic and autistic-like children
were among them. Moving forward, Mary taught
in Tampa, Florida from 1982 until 2015, and she
administered remedial and skills enhancement
training for teachers. In 2015 she retired and
moved to Fayetteville, GA with her husband,
Owen.
Mary and Owen met in a weight lifting
gym in 1984. Her interest in fitness continues,
with line dancing being a new undertaking.
She is a FSS Fitness Center volunteer and
speaks about the FSS members with a broad
smile. When they give her an update on
fitness progress, she responds with positive
reinforcement.
Mary’s son lives in Houston and her
daughter lives in New York. However, there is a
beautiful creature with a broken toe living in her
home. She is Dafne Marie, a beloved recycled
racer who was adopted from an animal rescue
association in 2010. She is a large greyhound
dog. No doubt, she’s had many runs around
Florida tracks before retiring. Mary describes
her as sweet and loving with two autoimmune
diseases. Walking about on their lawn, Dafne
looks like a deer, and she made friends with
deer. In the home, she is treated regally,
complete with booties on her feet and access
to lounging pillow-mats.
FSS is fortunate and grateful to have
Mary as a valuable volunteer, and Mary feels
that volunteering is a way of life. If it is needed,
she does it. Whether it is her daughter needing
a zipper in a skirt or a neighbor with Leukemia
needing a caretaker, Mary Frances obliges
willingly. She reports that she is leading a
blessed life and believes that when such is the
case you should give back. She says, “You do
the right thing because it is the right thing to do.”
