MESSAGE
It gives me immense pleasure to record my appreciation for successful conduct of the 64th Annual
Assembly, International Conference of the International Institute of Welding and impressive exhibition.
The events have met the expectations of hundreds of delegates from several countries around the globe.
This success is in spite of the fact that we had no alternative but to conduct the various meetings of the
Annual Assembly at two different locations, due to constraints of good infrastructure in Chennai. Needless
to say, the success of the events as well as comprehensive participation of Indian delegates and
organizations in technical commissions, working groups as well as in the international conference and
exhibition has brought welding fraternity in India to the world centre stage. I am confident that these
success and friendships would enable me, as President of International Institute of Welding, to frame
policies and future directions of the Institute in a way that would ensure meeting the objectives a aspiration of global welding fraternity
in a holistic manner. I congratulate the IIW-India Central Council, President R. Ravi, Hon. Secretary General, Parimal Biswas,
Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai branches for making the unique events a resounding success and thus making every welding
professional in India truly delighted.
Though we have reasons to be satisfied with our performance, we must realize that these success provide us with a window of
opportunities for all of us to come in direct contact with the best in welding science and technology. It is important for us to capitalize on
the opportunities so that we join the rest of the world in meeting challenges in welding science and technology. We should learn from
the strong industry-academia-research interactions that exist amongst best in rest of the world, especially in developed countries, to
develop technologies and products that are required for our industries and which would eventually replace existing products and
equipment that are in current use. Traditionally, Indian welding research concentrates more on property evaluations of the weld joints
and building capacity to produce state of art consumables, products and though this is relevant and important, it is equally important to
concentrate on product development. With less and less people available for building strong infrastructure in energy, water, health
care, agriculture etc. and realizing welding as a backbone profession, there is a strong case for welding automation and an important
and urgent need to shift from manual welding to automatic and robotic welding. These approaches would involve development of
automation systems or robotics, specified power sources, consumables and control systems. With India fast becoming a hub for heavy
engineering fabrication, India should be in a position to offer these products from within rather than importing from outside.
It is also important for India to move forward from conventional welding processes to advanced joining technologies which include
even, joining of micro and nano sized components and materials. This is an area which researchers and academicians should put their
head together and take the lead. Instead of just making joints using imported equipment and studying the properties, they should try to
develop, innovate and invent methods for joining these materials or components and thus make the technology available to the
industries. Safety and environment, assessment of integrity of welded structures and components in high performance environments,
modeling and simulation with virtual reality platforms, education to create future leaders, etc. are some of the key challenges in our
current era.
India with indigenous rhythm should vibe with the rest of the world to find robust solutions. I am posing these challenges to inspire you
to progress and take a leadership position in welding. We certainly have to learn from the best people in the respective areas of
expertise and cohesive implementation strategy, our continued participation in the Annual Assemblies and other events of IIW is thus
highly important and relevant. IIW-India should use the Annual Assemblies of IIW to expose the best brains working in area of welding
to latest trends in the science and technology of welding so that they make a wave front to take our country to the leadership position.
This would certainly require a paradigm shift in the way we have been thinking and working. You would realize that this paradigm shift
is essential. I request the Council of IIW-India to rise for meeting the challenges, have a clear vision, prepare a road map to realize
dream of India becoming one of the leading nations in welding science and technology and meet the aspirations of Indian and world
citizen.

MESSAGE
From Hony. Secretary General’s Desk
Dear Fellow Members,
Yes…We Can
I am very happy to write this message to you
and share with you the immense satisfaction
of having concluded a great event AA 2011,
IC 2011 and WELD INDIA 2011. Thanks to
the unstinted efforts of our steering,
organizing committees, event managers and
the moral, financial support of many, we
were able to put up a grand show which attracted a record number of
participants and visitors from India and abroad. Many delegates who
attended this event were full of praise for the hospitality shown,
thoughtful arrangements made, attention given to intricate details, the
variety, quality and taste of food served, the deep involvement of IIWIndia members in helping the visitors, the high quality of technical
papers presented by the Indian authors, etc. I can certainly say that all
these efforts have gone to put IIW-India firmly on the international
welding arena and have entirely changed the way international
welding community will look at India and IIW-India in future.
Such a grand show, which will be remembered for some more years to
come, was made possible through the sincere efforts, meticulous
planning by many, spread over many months coupled with the
blessings of the almighty. It is worth mentioning that we were hosting
this mega event for the first time and many were skeptical of our
country’s as well as IIW-India’s capabilities in organizing such a mega
event. In fact these expressed doubts encouraged us to be more
vigilant and double check each and every aspect to ensure best results.
It is a great experience for all of us and we welded ourselves at the right
time to put up a great show and to keep the IIW-India flag flying high.
Yes…We Can. I sincerely thank all those who helped in making this
possible.
Another important learning from this event was the realization of the
fact that we have in our own country itself a treasure trove of welding
expertise and knowledge. This was evident from the response and
discussions generated when many of our experts presented their
papers in the assembly and the conference. IIW-India is proud of all of
them for presenting a glimpse of our contribution to this great field.
With our Distinguished Scientist Dr. Baldev Raj assuming the office
of the President of IIW during this event, I am sure Indian welding
fraternity will have many opportunities to show case themselves in the
international forums. Yes…We Can
Having done such a wonderful event, we have now with us a major
responsibility and that is to maintain this tempo and take IIW-India
further on its growth path. This is a huge responsibility, again
requiring a carefully planned strategy for the coming years. I am sure
all of us will put our minds and chalk out this program. Our collective
efforts have helped us to achieve the glories of today and I am sure that
we will all ensure a glorious future too!
Dear Members,
At the outset, I am very pleased to report that
the 64th IIW Annual Assembly was a grand
success along with International Conference
and the 6th International Welding Exhibition
“WELD INDIA 2011”. The officials and
delegates of the International Institute of
Welding and member countries were
extremely appreciative of the arrangements
and the efficiency with which all the events were organized.
Each and everyone congratulated IIW-India on our very successful
holding of this MEGA Event and thanked us profusely for the excellent
hospitality. Truly, it is a great feather in the cap of IIW-India.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the
International Advisory Committee, National Advisory Committee, all
members of the Organizing Committee and Steering Committee, our
event manager viz. M/s. K. W. Conferences and M/s. Uni Tech Expo,
our Sponsors, our advertisers and exhibitors and all other directly and
indirectly associated for their support and their untiring and dedicated
efforts towards making the Assembly and associated events such a grand
success.
During the Assembly, Dr. Baldev Raj, Past President, IIW-India was
officially announced as the President of the International Institute of
Welding and Prof. Dr. Ulrich Dilthey, outgoing President, IIW handed
over the charge to him in the Gala Banquet programme, on 20th July,
2011.
Members would be pleased to know that IIW-India Council had
approved formation of the ANBCC to operate IIW-India’s
Manufacturer Certification Scheme for certifying conformance to ISO
3834 in India. In this context, during the last IAB Meeting held during
the 64th Annual Assembly at Chennai, our IIW-India had been granted
Applicant ANBCC status by the International Authorization Board of
IIW.
Following the annual assembly, the 45th Annual General Meeting of
the Institute was held on Saturday, the 24th September, 2011 at Hotel
Golden Park, Kolkata. Before this meeting IIW-India had organized a
Workshop “VISION-2012-17 a developed plan for next five years
followed by first Governing Council Meeting of just formed ANBCC
on 23rd September, 2011. On the 24th morning, a workshop on

THE EVENT THAT WAS
The 64th Annual Assembly & the International Conference of the
International Institute of Welding (IIW 2011) was recently held from 17th
to 23rd July 2011 at Chennai, in the Southern State of Tamil Nadu, India
and was organized by the Indian Institute of Welding.
While the Venues for the assembly were Hotel Hilton & Hotel Le Royal
Meriden, the International Conference was held in the Auditorium & Meeting Hall of Chennai Trade
Centre. Simultaneously, "Weld India", the 67th International Welding Technology Exhibition was held
in the Exhibition Halls of the Chennai Trade Centre, between 21-23 July 2011.
As expected, the Annual Assembly & the International Conference- being the most significant events of the
International Institute of Welding, attracted eminent scientists, engineers & practitioners in the field of
Welding Technology from all over the world, but the tremendous historical & socio-cultural appeal of India
as a destination also helped to draw a large number of delegates from 48 nations of the World. Altogether
923 persons attended the Assembly & Conference, which is perhaps the highest ever, the previous highest
was in IIW 2010 held in Istanbul where, as reported by the organizers, there were almost 900
participants.
IIW 2011 was truly a superlative event, not in terms of numbers alone but also with respect to the meeting
arrangements, official functions, social networking meets, cultural programmes, food, transportation and
other services, social and technical tours, etc. But what distinctively won the hearts of all was the warm
hospitality and personal attention provided by the organizers - true to Indian traditions.
The exhibition was an astounding success. 6000 business visitors, 2000 student visitors and nearly
30 crores of business transactions with a number of enquiries from prospective customers speak of the success
of the exhibition. The exhibitors were very happy with WELD INDIA 2011 and promised to be back for
our next show.
On behalf of the Indian Welding Journal, I congratulate Dr. Baldev Raj for assuming the office of the
President of the International Institute of Welding and also take the opportunity to thank him for his very
able guidance, which went a long way to make the event a great success.
A detailed Report follows.

IIW 2011
Preparations started more than one year back, but the organizers had a very tough job in hand and had to cross many hurdles
before all the arrangements could be put in place. One of the major challenges was to find suitable venues for all the
commissions, IAB and select group meetings etc., as in Chennai no single venue had the capacity or facility to hold the
assembly fulfilling all the stringent guidelines of the International Institute of Welding. Finally to solve the problem, the venue
for the meetings and functions had to be spread between two nearby hotels, viz. "Le Royal Meridian" and "Hotel Hilton".
For the first time in the history of Annual Assembly organization, complimentary air conditioned sedans and coaches were
arranged for all the registered delegates and accompanied persons for commuting from their hotels to the venue and back, intervenue transfers and also for moving to the venues for social and cultural events and back to the respective hotels of stay, to
facilitate the attendees to be in time for various meetings. Yet another precedence was created by the local organizing committee,
as complimentary lunch was provided on all days of the proceedings.

The local organizing
committee had also set
up felicitation counters
in the domestic and
international arrival
lounges of Chennai
Airport and all the
arriving delegates were
cordially received. It was
Delegates arriving at LRMC
also ensured that all of
them could be smoothly
transferred to their respective hotels through courtesy coaches /
vehicles provide by hotels or by the local organizers. This was also a
new initiative, not done ever before in any annual assembly.
To facilitate easy registration, multiple desks were put up in both the
hotels including payment counters and booths for spot registration.
The delegate kits were also quickly distributed during registration
itself. Help desks for travel and transport, social and technical visits and
also for foreign currency conversion were all set up alongside the
registration desks. A specially designed software was developed for the
delegates to make their choices for tables in the Gala Banquet Dinner.
Apart from the in house security arrangements of the hotels,
additional guards were provided by the local organizers for the safety
and security of the guests. The local organizers also took sufficient
insurance coverage for any unforeseen circumstances beyond their
control.
THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
The curtains of this great event IIW 2011 were raised with the holding
of the General Assembly at Hilton Grand Ball Room between 14:00 to
