If you live in New Zealand you will send in plant material and soil with some of your activities. Overseas students Do not send any plant material or soil into New Zealand. Take a photo instead to email or post to your teacher. CHOOSING STANDARDS You may wish to do only some standards. For example, you may only want to do internal standards in this course. You should discuss this with your horticulture teacher and/or learning advisor or your school supervisor. You should consider how well your choices will meet your learning goals and if you will be able to gain enough credits to achieve NCEA Level 1. To be awarded NCEA Level 1, you will need to gain a minimum of 80 credits at Level 1 (or above) including the 10 credits for literacy and the 10 credits for numeracy. A list of achievement standards from levels 1, 2 and 3 that count towards Level 1 literacy and numeracy can be accessed from: www.nzqa.govt.nz/about-us/our-role/legislation/nzqa-rules/secondary-schoolssupporting-information/level-1-literacy-and-numeracy-requirements/ SELF-ASSESSMENT Many assessment activities are self-marked. You’ll find an Answer guide towards the back of each workbook. Use these answers to mark your own work and make corrections where necessary. Self-marking is very important as it gives you instant feedback on how well you understand the ideas, concepts or information that have been covered. 6 science – horticulture – ht1000ca ASSESSMENT Students are required to send in their self-marked activities as well as their internal or practice external assessments. Teachers send student work back with feedback and feed forward. The detailed criteria for Achievement and Unit Standards will be given in the internal assessment tasks. They can also be found by searching the subject and level in the NCEA part of the NZQA website (www.nzqa.govt.nz) and then finding the relevant standard(s). If there are two assessment opportunities for an Achievement Standard, one is called ‘Y1’ and the other is called ‘Y2’. External assessment preparation includes: »» practice external assessments »» Te Kura practice examinations. TIME COMMITMENT There are eight standards in this course. Each standard is made up into one or more topics. Each workbook or booklet for a topic has a note in the inside front cover of how many hours the topic is likely to take. For example, workbook HT1021 may take 10 hours of work to complete at the normal pace. This is about two weeks of work. Before deciding on the pace of learning, read through this Course and assessment guide and ask yourself the following questions: »» How much time can I set aside for study each week? »» Will I be able to keep a steady pace of five hours of study each week? »» What do I want to do next year? How many credits will I need to do this? »» Will I be doing externally and internally assessed standards? »» Will I be prepared to sit the external examination in November? »» Will I need specific external or internal credits as a prerequisite for next year’s study or work? NORMAL PACE OF LEARNING A normal pace of learning is similar to what a student does at school. As a guide, expect to do at least five hours work per week. This means completing four to five workbooks each term so that you complete the course before the end of year external examinations. science – horticulture – ht1000ca 7 COVER SHEETS The back cover of each workbook/booklet becomes the cover sheet for your work. Fill it in and sign it before sending a completed workbook/booklet back to Te Kura. Your supervisor also signs this sheet as part of our authenticity requirements (if applicable). All students are encouraged to submit as much as possible of their work online via the OTLE Dropbox. When work requires authentication, students will follow the instructions provided in OTLE. QUERIES ABOUT YOUR WORK It is important to contact your Horticulture teacher if you have any queries about your work. When you contact your teacher, it helps to have your ID number, workbook/ booklet code (for example, HT1021) and the activity or question number, but it is not essential. 8 science – horticulture – ht1000ca 3 ht1000 course outline Standard number Standard title Internal/ external Credits Workbook/ (30) booklet codes Codes for assessment tasks AS90918 AHS1.1 Carry out a practical agricultural or horticultural investigation Internal 4 HT1011 HT1011Y1 HT1101Y2 AS90157 AHS1.2 Demonstrate practical skills used in agricultural or horticultural production Internal 4 HT1021 HT1021DV HT1021Y1 HT1022Y1 HT1023Y1 HT1024Y1 3 out of 4 skills must be achieved to gain credits in this standard AS90919 AHS1.3 Demonstrate knowledge of soil management practices External 4 HT1031, HT1032 HT1033 HT1033PT HT1.3X Te Kura practice exam External NZQA exam AS90920 AHS1.4 Demonstrate knowledge of the geographic distribution of primary production in New Zealand Internal 3 HT1041 HT1042 HT1042Y1 HT1042Y2 AS90160 AHS1.5 Demonstrate knowledge of the impact of primary production management practices on the environment Internal 3 HT1051 HT1052 HT1053 HT1053Y1 HT1053Y2 AS90922 AHS1.8 Design a landscape plan that reflects user requirements Internal 3 HT1081 HT1081Y1 HT1081Y2 AS90923 AHS1.9 Demonstrate knowledge of basic plant propagation techniques Internal 4 HT1091 HT1092 HT1093 HT1093Y1 HT1093Y2 AS90924 AHS1.10 Demonstrate knowledge of horticultural plant management practices and related plant physiology External 5 HT1101 HT1102 HT1103 HT1103PT HT1.10X Te Kura practice exam External NZQA exam Note: 1. Te Kura practice examination results can be used to determine a derived grade if a student is unable to sit the externally assessed final examination at the end of the year. science – horticulture – ht1000ca 9 4 assessment information STANDARDS The National Qualifications Framework has two types of national standards: Achievement and Unit Standards. Credits from both Achievement Standards and Unit Standards count towards NCEA. Please refer to our Student Guide to National Certificates or NZQA (www.nzqa.govt.nz) and Te Kura websites (www.tekura.school.nz) for more information about National Certificates of Educational Achievement, and assessment. AWARDING NCEA STANDARDS There are four possible results for both internally and externally assessed achievement standards. Achievement standards can be awarded any of the grades. Not achieved »» no credit (N) Achieved (three grades) »» achieved (A) »» achieved with merit (M) »» achieved with excellence (E) »» These three grades carry the same number of credits. INTERNAL ASSESSMENT Some Achievement Standards are internally assessed. This means that the teachers set and mark your assessments at Te Kura. These tasks are shrink-wrapped and inserted into the appropriate workbooks or booklets. Once you have completed the teaching and learning for a topic and received feedback from your teacher, you can complete these tasks any time you and your supervisor are ready. Follow the instructions carefully and send the completed tasks back to your teacher. Once your teacher has assessed your work they will send you a report for each internally assessed task. SUPERVISION OF INTERNALLY ASSESSED TASKS Everything you submit for the internally assessed tasks must be your own work. You may need to be supervised while carrying out part or all of an assessment. The conditions sections at the front of the assessment will explain the level of supervision required. FURTHER ASSESSMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR INTERNAL ASSESSMENTS For some standards, you will be able to complete a second assessment called a ‘further assessment opportunity’ to improve your results. These standards are indicated in the course outline. You should take this opportunity where it is available. 10 science – horticulture – ht1000ca RESUBMISSIONS If you have made a small mistake in your assessment, your teacher may offer you a resubmission. This means you have made an error that you are capable of discovering and correcting by yourself. A resubmission allows you to improve your result. AUTHENTICITY When you submit assessment work to Te Kura you sign the cover sheet indicating that the work you are submitting is your own work and was done under the required assessment conditions. Your supervisor signs the cover sheet to confirm this (where applicable). For the skills standard the supervisor may also need to fill in and sign a supervisor sheet. If you are an adult student you must still have the cover sheet signed by another adult such as a neighbour, partner, friend or similar person to verify the work is your own. When submitting work online via the OTLE Dropbox, if it requires authentication, students must follow the instructions provided in OTLE. EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT External assessment means that someone outside the school marks students’ work. This may be through NZQA examinations in November or by submitting a portfolio or project for subjects such as Graphics, Technology and Art. You will be able to complete practice assessments and Te Kura examinations for external standards. PRACTICE EXAMINATIONS Students should complete the Te Kura practice examinations for any external standards with an end of year examination they have entered. It is important that students complete all practice external assessments and examinations. If for some reason, such as illness, you are unable to sit the examinations at the end of the year you will only be eligible for consideration for a derived grade (compassionate consideration) if you have completed the practice examinations. DERIVED GRADES (COMPASSIONATE CONSIDERATION) If for any unexpected reason you are not able to sit your end of year examination or to submit final work towards an external standard (portfolios or projects), you may be eligible for a derived grade. Please refer to the Student Guide to National Certificates and contact your learning advisor or secondary dual school supervisor to find out more information. APPEALS You have the right to query an assessment result if you want further clarification or disagree with the result. If you are still not satisfied, you may appeal. Refer to the Student Guide to National Certificates for more information. You can also appeal any other decisions, procedures or policies about assessments. Contact your horticulture teacher or learning advisor or secondary dual school supervisor if you wish to appeal. More information and a form that students can use to appeal is available on the Te Kura website in the Student Toolkit area (www.tekura.school.nz and go to student toolkit). science – horticulture – ht1000ca 11 12 science – horticulture – ht1000ca 6 my horticulture assessment record (ht1000) Standard number Date Grade awarded Further assessment opportunity or resubmission date AS90918 AHS1.1 AS90157 AHS1.2 AS90919 AHS1.3 HT1.3X practice exam AS90920 AHS1.4 AS90160 AHS1.5 AS90922 AHS1.8 AS90923 AHS1.9 AS90924 AHS1.10 HT1.10X practice exam Credits sub-total (before NZQA examination results) science – horticulture – ht1000ca Grade awarded Credits
