Power Electronics - Embedded Firmware Engineer Position: Power Electronics - Embedded Firmware Engineer Department: Engineering Department Reports To: CTO / VP of Engineering JOB SUMMARY: Engineer to lead design efforts for cutting-edge power conversion products. Responsibilities include high performance electrical design, conceptual firmware development, and hands-on application integration. Successful candidates will have: A strong grasp of control theory fundamentals Development experience from a system design perspective Over 5 years of circuit and firmware design experience Experience relating to electric power conversion in high-speed, interrupt-driven environments PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Development of advanced power generation and motion control systems. 2. Requirement derivation, schematic and PCB design, and embedded code development. 3. Firmware development for Trust Automation standard products and customer specific applications. 4. Design verification through control system and circuit analysis. 5. Integration and test of motion control systems, including firmware, electrical systems and motors. 6. Support and modification of existing hardware/software as required. 7. Contribution to the Trust Automation engineering team knowledge base, bringing a fresh perspective on firmware design, power conversion and motor integration. 8. Collaborate with the firmware engineering team to advance drive/motor efficiencies. 9. Contribution to technical planning for future product and/or custom application architecture. 10. Participate in Trust Automation’s design and development processes, including design and documentation reviews. 11. Assist Program Managers and Trust VPs with project/program planning, including specification of product and system application solutions, task prioritization, and risk mitigation. 12. Contribute to project/program success by meeting design requirements on schedule and within budget. Assist with customer interaction and perform product/system demonstrations as needed. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Minimum Qualifications: BSEE 5+ years of hardware and firmware design experience relating to custom power conversion products Digital and analog circuit design experience Experience with power levels of up to 5 kW 2. Motor drives, inverters, power supplies, and front-end PFC experience 3. Closed-loop control of motor torque, speed, and position experience 4. PID control theory experience 5. Embedded programming in C and assembly a. Experience with TI and Atmel microcontrollers and DSPs preferred 6. Space vector PWM, field oriented control, direct torque control, trapezoidal/six-step control 7. Design of permanent magnet motor topologies, power inductors, and power transformers 8. Familiarity with gate drive techniques for power MOSFET’s and IGBT’s 9. Familiarity with communication interfaces/protocols: SPI, I2C, Modbus, USB, CAN, RS232, RS422/RS485, Ethernet, EtherCAT 10. Familiarity of UL1741/IEEE1547 preferred 11. Familiarity with agile development processes preferred 12. Thrives in an innovative, multidisciplinary design team environment 13. Requires professional written and verbal communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills 14. Ability to manage time effectively and work effectively with Program Managers and upper management WORKING CONDITIONS Working conditions are normal for a high technology engineering environment.
