Chartered Director Programme The Institute of Directors (IoD) has conducted an extensive consultation process with the aim of developing a programme that delivers greater professionalisation of directors. Following 116 online submissions, seven focus groups, several stakeholder meetings and other feedback, a detailed proposal was presented to the IoD National Council in April. This proposal was approved and the process of implementation, communication and transition will now begin. Key features Membership structure The Chartered Director programme is designed to transition the IoD from a membership organisation into a professional body. The programme aims to offer members meaningful recognition for their experience and expertise and to provide the market assurance of the quality of IoD members. The key features are: A diagram outlining the new membership structure and the key requirements for each category is shown on page two of this document. Under the new structure there are six categories: • compulsory continuing professional development (CPD) and assessment for members o an evidence-based CPD portfolio system where members are required to link their activity to the IoD’s New Zealand Director Competency Framework in order to improve their practice • continuous disclosure under a charter o the charter will include the principles of ‘fit and proper’ as appropriate to governance • a change to the membership structure (see below for further details). Associate Member Chartered Director Fellow (Chartered Director) Distinguished Fellow Retired. All categories except Associate and Retired have a requirement for CPD and continuous disclosure under a charter. Existing IoD members who do not wish to commit to CPD but wish to retain the current benefits of membership will be able to transition to associate status under the new programme (although they will no longer be able to use the post-nominal). • • • • • • Transition As with all major changes the move to the Chartered Director programme will require a period of transition. The full details of this transition are still to be developed but it will include all existing iod.org.nz IoD members being transitioned to the new ‘Member’ category. Members will be able to choose to transition to the ‘Associate’ category if they do not wish to take on the responsibilities of the Member category. Timeline The structural and constitutional changes required will be made at the 2014 AGM. The new rules reflecting these changes will be available shortly for consultation. In the meantime questions and comments should be channeled through chartereddirector@iod.org.nz Associate Member The IoD is confident that this significant change will lift the game of directorship in New Zealand. It will ensure that members are recognised and respected for their commitment to high standards of professionalism and their on-going engagement with the director community. It will also give the market confidence that IoD members have demonstrated professional standards and have a commitment to best practice and on-going professional development. The transition to the new programme will take time and it is vital that we get it right. We will continue to keep you updated with progress and provide additional information as it becomes available.
