Achieving Success for All
Chryston High School
S2 Personalisation and choice Booklet 2015
Introduction
S2 is a crucial time for pupils in their High School career. Throughout S1
and S2, pupils will have had an opportunity to develop skills from many of
the Experiences and Outcomes outlined within “A Curriculum for
Excellence” and will be beginning to decide where their strengths lie.
In order to make effective course choice pupils should consider the following questions



What interests me?
What subjects am I good at?
What shall I do in the future?
Choosing courses can be difficult for pupils and their families and we hope that this booklet will
be of help to all concerned at this important time. It lists what subjects are available, what these
subjects may involve, and which career opportunities these subjects may offer. These choices
will not only decide what is studied for the next two years, but will also have an effect on which
careers and further / higher education courses are available upon leaving school.
To help choose subjects wisely, pupils will be given opportunities to meet with Pupil Support
staff; talk over decisions with parents and, if need be, meet with the schools careers advisor.
Pupils are strongly advised to study this booklet carefully before making any decisions.

The following information will allow parents and pupils to understand the personalisation and
choice process and allow for planning in the coming months. The following steps will be taken in
school to ensure the transition is as effective as possible for each pupil :

S2 into S3 Choice programme in PSHE class.
Each S2 pupil receives a personal interview with Pupil Support Staff (Pupil Support
teacher.)

Parents are invited to attend an Information Evening in the school on Wednesday 4th of
February 2015.
This takes the form of a 5 minute presentation by each Department / Faculty Head
followed by an opportunity to ask questions and meet various members of staff who are
involved in organising the choice process. More information about this evening will be
available on the school website.

The S2 Parents’ Consultation meeting, which will be held in the school at 4.15pm on
Wednesday 25th February 2014.
This will give parents an opportunity to meet with their child’s class teachers to discuss
performance in each subject. The S2 school reports, which will be issued prior to the
parents’ meeting, will give a clear indication of pupils’ performance in each subject.

Our Careers Adviser will be available for consultation with pupils. An appointment can
be made through the school office at lunch times or morning interval.

Section 1 - General Advice
When choosing subjects for S3 / 4, pupils should think about the
possible careers for the future, but there are other things to bear in mind,
ie:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Am I able to cope with the subject? Was I any good at it in S2?
Do I like the subject?
Am I picking a variety of subjects?
Am I choosing too many subjects which will be ‘hard’ for me?
In the main, choose subjects which keep options open.
In the second year of the Junior phase, S2 pupils are asked to choose subjects under the
Curricular areas. This is to ensure they have coverage of the Experiences and Outcomes which
should help them to acquire and develop the skill set which is crucial for S4- S6
What does this mean?
1. Where possible, you should try to choose subjects which are needed for large numbers of
careers and courses.
2. You should try not to do too many specialist subjects.
3. Don’t do a group of subjects aimed at only one job / career - there may not be any job
vacancies when you leave school.
4. There are no boys or girls subjects.
5. There is also room in S3/4 to take one subject which you simply enjoy, even if you do not
intend using it as a career pathway.
Careers Advice
Our school’s Careers Advisor, is available at a Careers Clinic
in the Library at lunchtime on Tuesdays and Thursdays
(12.55-1.40). Pupil Support Staff can help
with most questions, as can Mrs Perriss who looks after careers
information in the school. The Careers Library has lots of
information about careers. This takes the form of books,
pamphlets, prospectuses, videos and computer-based information.
Mrs Connor, the Librarian, can advise on this.
Which Subjects fit which Careers?
Most careers, college and university courses require passes in particular subjects. Most careers
and places in Further or Higher Education require qualifications in English and Maths. Because
of the importance of these subjects, all pupils take them in S3/4. Section 4 contains information
regarding careers linked to the subjects on offer in S3/4.

Section 2 - Choosing a Course
Every pupil is given a choice form like the one on the final page of
this booklet. On the form subjects are grouped together under
columns or “Curricular areas.” Pupils will pick 8 subjects and are asked to make
1 choice from each option column in columns A-F. (A sample choice form
is included on the last page of this booklet) With the 2 remaining choices pupils may pick 2
subjects from any column.
Notes
1. Subjects should be chosen so that they combine to make a coherent course.
combinations of subjects make little sense.
Some
2. We have tried to offer courses that will suit as many pupils as possible. If there is an
unexpected demand for particular subjects, we shall attempt to accommodate as many
pupils as possible. Past performance in S1 and S2 may also play a part in this.
3.
Whilst ensuring that every pupil will receive a broad and balanced curriculum, the
provision of courses is always dependant on the school’s actual staffing allocation and
the number of pupils choosing each subject.
4. Please note that subject choices cannot be changed after the beginning of 3rd year
timetable.
5. The progression to either National 4 or 5 is largely dependant on each pupil’s performance
in S3. It will be at the individual teacher’s discretion whether pupils follow the National 4
or National 5 course and will be dependant on pupil attainment, commitment and
attitude to work throughout the completion of the remaining experiences and outcomes.
Although the information in this booklet is correct at time of printing, it should not be
assumed that there will be no change affecting any of the matters dealt with in the document.

Section 3 - Courses and Certificates
The new Qualifications
Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) is the 3-18 curriculum in schools which will help to prepare
young people for the twenty-first century.
Since the introduction of CfE, Scotland's education system, including qualifications,
assessment and learning and teaching approaches have been reviewed.
We are developing and updating the new qualifications young people are studying.
The new national qualifications called National 3, National 4 and National 5.
National 4 and National 5 have replaced the previous national qualifications – Standard Grade
General and Credit, and Intermediate 1 and 2. Foundation level Standard Grades will be
replaced by the new National 3.

National 3 – In most instances this will allow for pupils who have not yet reached the level
required for National 4 and will serve as a “step up” allowing them to focus on bridging the
knowledge between experiences and outcomes and National 4.
National 4 – These courses will comprise 3 main units which will build on the skills taught
through S1-S3. Pupils will utilise these skills to pass class tests, create models, put together
assignments, complete practical coursework etc. The National 4 course will also include an
added value Unit. This will require the learner to demonstrate depth of understanding and/or
application of skills. This unit will not be graded.
National 5 - These courses will comprise 3 main units which will build on the skills taught
through S1-S3. Pupils will utilise these skills to pass class tests, create models, put together
assignments, complete practical coursework etc. For National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher,
the course will include an external assessment. This will sample breadth, depth and
application from across the Course. The external assessment will be graded A-D

Principal teacher – Miss. S Hunter (Acting)
Course Outline:
S3 Modern Foreign Languages will develop pupils’ skills in talk and listening,
reading and writing. Our aim is to extend and deepen knowledge of language,
building on standards reached at the end of S2. Learning experiences in
modern languages develop and enhance the essential skills of literacy,
personal and interpersonal skills, communication and ICT skills, and working
with others. Key features of learning and teaching are:
Assessment:
Each piece of work builds an overall understanding of pupils’ progress and
assessment is ongoing and formative, supporting learning and next steps
throughout the session. Following on from S1 and S2, learning activities
encourage young people to take responsibility for their own learning, to
assess their own strengths and weaknesses and to develop an awareness of
the needs of others. As they develop communicative competence, pupils are
regularly challenged to use their knowledge in a creative way or in an
unfamiliar context.
Progression:
Pupils will be able to progress to National 4 or 5 in S4. Thereafter, they can
continue to Higher and beyond.
Career Opportunities: Recent research confirms that English is regarded as a basic skill in Europe and
that as native English speakers; we must be able to communicate in a
language other than English to have a competitive edge in a global economy.
Here are few reasons why it should be German:
 Germany has the third largest economy in the world and has the largest
economy in Europe.
 It is the most important trading partner for almost all European and numerous
non-European countries.
 It is the second largest exporter in the world.
 Today German is spoken by more than 100 million people worldwide.
 In many countries, Germans account for the largest percentage of tourists. A
good knowledge of German is important in the tourist industry.
 German is the second most frequently used language in which to write a work
of scientific research, especially engineering, chemistry and physics.
 Germany is a world leader in engineering, renewable energy, pharmaceutical
and chemical industries and automobile production. It is important in the
financial sector and the world’s largest international trade fairs are held
annually in Germany.
“When I’m selling to you, I speak English but if you are selling to me, dann müssen Sie Deutsch.” Willy

Languages For Life And Work
Principal teacher – Miss. S Hunter
Course Outline:
Our aim is to enthuse pupils and give them the will to not just learn a
new language but also experience a new culture so that in the future
they have the same opportunities as any other European youngster. In
this course pupils will have the opportunity to learn, at a basic level,
one or more languages from German, French and Spanish. They will be
introduced to language that they would be able to use in a workplace
or in their leisure time: for example, on holiday. Pupils will also have
the opportunity to talk to employers and/or visit places of work.

Career Opportunities: In the modern world, languages and communication skills have
become increasingly important in the workplace, where global trade,
business, travel and ICT are part of everyday life. Recent reports from
CBI and the European Commission stress an increasing requirement for
competence in foreign languages. In the world of international trade
and business, young people in Scotland must be equipped with the
skills that will allow them to take advantage of the opportunities that
exist for those with sound language abilities. The European
Commission report emphasises that English is regarded as a basic skill.
In order to have a competitive edge, employees and employers need
to have a language other than English even at a basic level. As well as
increased employability, young people who learn a language have a
better understanding of different cultures and developing as a global
citizen, improved self-confidence, enhanced ability to build new
relationships, improved literacy and reading skills in English, enhanced
problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills. They
become more successful learners in other curricular areas as a result.
