Geography: Griffin, County Seat of Spalding County, is located in the Piedmont section of Georgia, 40 miles south of
Atlanta. The community has an average elevation of 980 feet above sea level. Climate is mild with warm summers
and mild winters. There are 201 sq. miles...13 sq. miles in the city and 188 sq. miles in the county.
Population: The 2000 census figure shows 23,451 for Griffin and 58,417 for Spalding County.
Government:
The City of Griffin is governed by 7-member Board of Commissioners with a City Manager.

County garbage has to be carried to dumpsters at county fire stations. Call the County Commissioners'

Driver' s License: You have 30 days to get your Georgia driver' s license. You should apply at the local State Patrol
Headquarters, 1313 Arthur K. Bolton Parkway. You do not have to take a written test if license from another state is

Auto License Plates: New residents from out-of-state should secure license plates at the Tag Agent' s Office, ground
level, Spalding County Courthouse on East Solomon Street at 6th Street, within 30 days after establishing their
residence in Georgia. Georgia residents who move to Spalding County from other counties should change their

Register To Vote: If you are 18 years of age, a legal resident of Georgia and a legal resident of
Spalding County, you are eligible to register to vote. The Board of Registration Office is located in

Employers withhold personal income tax from employees as a payroll deduction. State income tax returns must be
made to the State Department of Revenue Income Tax April 15th annually.

Recreation: The Spalding County Parks and Recreation Department, Camp Northern Road, sponsors year-round
activities for all residents...football, soccer, baseball, softball, basketball. City Park has tennis courts, 18 hole golf

Griffin reservoir is located in west Spalding County and has fishing and boating but boats must use electric motors.
There is no charge for fishing. You must have a State of Georgia fishing license. License may be purchased where
fishing tackle is sold. Still Branch Reservoir also offers fishing.
High Falls State Park is located 18 miles from Griffin and has swimming, fishing, camping, motor boating...nothing
over 10 hp motor.
Lake Jackson is located 27 miles east of Griffin and has swimming, fishing, camping, water skiing, motor boating.
No limit on size of motor.
Private Golf Courses: Cabin Creek Golf Course is located on North Second Street Extension, 770-227-9494. It is an
18 hole course. Membership may be purchased.
Canongate at SunCity Peachtree as well as Canongate at Heron Bay.
The Club at Shoal Creek is privately owned. It is located at 430 Club Drive, 770-228-0710. They have swimming,
tennis courts, 18 hole golf course, dining facilities for members.
