Introduction
With the variety of process control systems available, it is often necessary to convert an input signal into
a format that the control system will accept. Signal conditioners take signals from an assortment of field
instruments such as thermocouples and RTDs, and convert those signals into any of several standard
instrument signals (1-5 V, 4-20 mA, etc.) while providing isolations.
Signal conditioners are also beneficial to the accurate transfer of these signals and the elimination of
ground loops.
Pepperl+Fuchs signal conditioners utilize the latest technology, offering unparalleled protection against
ground loops while maintaining optimum signal accuracy and complete isolation. There are three basic
types of KF signal conditioners:
Loop Powered Repeaters/Isolators: Loop powered repeaters do not require a separate
power supply. Available in single and dual channel models, these transformer isolated
signal conditioners transfer analog DC signals with each channel working as a DC isolator
providing 2,500 VDC isolation between the input and output.
Analog Isolators: These units require a separate power supply and provide signal
conditioning and 3-way isolation to various input signals.
Limit Alarms: This class of signal conditioners provides two Form C relay outputs with
adjustable high and low switchpoints and selectable control safe and normal operation.
They also require a separate power supply and provide 3-way isolation.
The latter two categories are fully field-configurable and provide 1,800 VDC isolation separating input,
output and power supply. Input and output ranges, modes of operation, switchpoints, etc., can be
programmed in the field via DIP switches on the side of the housing. Some models also offer a PC
interface. Input, zero, and span are adjustable by potentiometer to 50% for all input ranges. The wideranging capabilities and field-configurable settings allow for numerous options in a diverse range of
applications.
All P+F analog isolators and limit alarms also contain the ASIC chip for increased reliability. ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuitry) substantially reduces failures by virtually eliminating discrete components and their solder joints where most faults occur. Printed circuit board connections are reduced
by 70%.

OPERATION:
Signal Conditioners
The KFD0-CS-1.50 is a single-channel
device that does not require a separate
power supply. Due to the 24 VDC input
voltage limitation and the internal voltage
drop, the maximum output voltage under
load is 23 VDC. The maximum internal
resistance is 230 ohms. At input voltages
greater than 26.1 V, the internal voltage
drop is lower than with input voltages
below 26.1 V.

■ Wide range of DC current inputs
■ 3-way isolation
■ Accepts bipolar inputs
The KFDX-DCI accepts a DC current input
and provides a fully isolated proportional
current or voltage output. In order to eliminate
ground loops, the I/O channel is optically
isolated to 1800 VDC and transformer
isolated from the power supply.
The input can be configured in the field for

CURRENT INPUT OPTION
Signal Conditioners
Current flowing into terminals 10 and 11(9)
passes through resistor Internal Load,
generating a voltage that is transferred to the
DC/DC converter. A current limit circuit in line
with terminal 9 protects Rm from damage. The
maximum voltage drop across the input is only
4 V at 20 mA, allowing the connection of
several KFD2-CD-1.32 input circuits in series.

This device also features internal/external cold
junction compensation, burnout monitoring for
thermocouples and burnout and short circuit
monitoring for RTDs.
All settings are programmed and calibrated
through a serial interface to PC (on-line
programming).
A signal at terminals 2 and 3 is transmitted across
the isolator and converted to an equivalent
output at terminals 7 and 8. Terminal 7 has the
same polarity as terminal 2.
All parameters are programmable through a KADP1 cable (sold separately) that provides the
connection between the programming socket
of the KFD2-UT and the RS232 PC interface.
Accessories include removable terminals with
internal cold junction compensation (K-CJC) and
a K-SK programming software kit. The K-ADP1
and K-SK are required unless the KFD2-UT-1-1
is configured by P+F.

■ 3-way isolation
The KFDX-AC accepts an AC voltage/current
input and provides a fully isolated proportional
DC current or voltage output. In order to
eliminate ground loops, the I/O channel is
optically isolated to 1,800 VDC and
transformer isolated from the power supply.
Note: For information about programming,
refer to our website at www.am.pepperl-fuchs.com
Signal Conditioners
The input can be configured in the field for
one of twelve voltage ranges from 100 mV to
250 V and 4 current ranges from 10 mA to
100 mA. Output is linear to the input,
configurable for five ranges: 0-5 V, 0-10 V, 01 mA, 0-20 mA, or 4-20 mA.
The KFDX-AC is outfitted with a green dual
function power/signal status LED. When the
unit is powered, the LED is illuminated. When
the input signal is over 110% of the full scale
range, the LED flashes at 8 Hz.
This unit is not intrinsically safe.

■ Span from 2 Hz to 10,000 Hz
■ Easy push-button calibration
■ 3-way isolation
The KFDX-HZ accepts a frequency input
and provides a fully isolated proportional
DC current or voltage output. This isolator
also effectively eliminates ground loops
with 1,800 VDC isolation separating input,
output and power supply.
Signal Conditioners
The input range can be configured in the
field for any frequency span from 2 Hz to
10,000 Hz via DIP switches on the side of
the housing. The output is configurable for
five ranges: 0-5 V, 0-10 V, 0-1 mA, 0-20
mA, or 4-20 mA.
The KFDX-HZ is simply configured via
push-buttons rather than a zero and span
potentiometer. Set the input frequency
span by applying the maximum and
minmum frequencies to the system and
pressing the CAL button while the INPUT
LED is lit.
The KFDX-HZ is outfitted with three LEDs:
LEVEL (Green), INPUT (Yellow), and
OUTPUT (Red).

KFDA-DCV
■ Wide range of DC voltage inputs
■ Field configurable inputs/outputs
■ 3-way isolation
■ 2 adjustable, independent relay
contact outputs
The KFDA-DCV accepts a DC voltage input
and provides two adjustable relay outputs.
This limit alarm also effectively eliminates
ground loops with 1,800 VDC isolation
separating input, output and power supply.
Setpoints can be configured as HI or LO in
selectable controlsafe or non-controlsafe
operating modes. The KFDA-DCV relies on
deadband (hysteresis) and constant sampling
of the input to prevent false switching when
the input varies slightly on either side of the
setoint. The input must remain beyond the
setpoint for 100ms, uninterrupted, to qualify
as a valid trip condition. To return the alarm
to an untripped condition, the input signal
must be outside the deadband and remain
there for 100 ms. This time-based dynamic
deadband, in addition to the evaluation of
hysteresis, improves setpoint stability. Select
unipolar operation for inputs that do not
change in polarity.

■ Single-channel, 24 VDC supply

■ 2 programmable trip points
The KFD2-GS-1.2W is a trip amplifier for two
independently field-configurable limit alarms.
Three-way galvanic isolated units convert 0/4-20
mA, 0/1-5 V and 0/2-10 V signals into trip point
outputs.
Signal Conditioners
For high alarm indication, the status of the contact
output changes when the setpoint is exceeded
and will not reset until a lower value is met. The
difference between these states is the adjustable
hysteresis.
The trip alarm is adjustable by a selector switch
and potentiometer.
A monitoring voltage output of 0-10 V can be used
to adjust limit values and hysteresis without
interrupting the input signal.
This unit is not intrinsically safe.

KFDA-TC
■ Wide input range of thermocouples
■ Field configurable input/output
■ 3-way isolation
■ 2 adjustable independent relay
contact outputs
The KFDA-TC accepts a B, E, J, K, S, R or T
type thermocouple input and provides two
adjustable contact outputs. This limit alarm also
effectively eliminates ground loops with 1,800
VDC isolation separating input, output and power
supply. The KFDA-TC is configurable for multiple
temperature ranges per thermocouple type. It
also accepts bipolar inputs and offers selectable
upscale and downscale burnout detection.

Setpoints can be configured as HI or LO in
selectable controlsafe or non-controlsafe
operating modes. The KFDA-TC relies on
deadband (hysteresis) and constant sampling of
the input to prevent false switching when the input
varies slightly on either side of the setpoint. The
input must remain uninterrupted beyond the
setpoint for 100 ms to qualify as a valid trip
condition. To return the alarm to an untripped
condition, the input signal must fall outside the
deadband and remain there for 100 ms. This
time-based dynamic deadband improves
setpoint stability.
The KFDA-TC is equipped with three LEDs. The
first is a green INPUT LED which indicates DC
power and input signal status. If this LED does
not illuminate during power-up, check wiring
connections. When the input signal is over 110%
of the full scale range, the INPUT LED flashes at
8 Hz; below 0% it flashes at 4 Hz. Each setpoint
has its own red LED that indicates the relay state.
An illuminated LED indicates a tripped condition.
This unit is not intrinsically safe.

KFDA-RTD
■ Wide input range of RTD
■ Field configurable input/output
■ 3-way isolation
■ 2 adjustable independent relay
contact outputs
The KFDA-RTD limit alarm accepts a 3-wire RTD
input (Pt100, Pt500, Pt1000, Cu10, Cu100, Ni120,
NiFe604) and provides two adjustable relay
outputs. This limit alarm also effectively eliminates
ground loops with 1,800 VDC isolation separating
input, output and power supply. The KFDA-RTD
is configurable for up to eight temperature ranges
for each RTD type.
Signal Conditioners
Setpoints can be configured as HI or LO in
selectable controlsafe or non-controlsafe operating
modes. The KFDA-RTD relies on deadband
(hysteresis) and constant sampling of the input to
prevent false switching when the input varies
slightly on either side of the setpoint. The input
must remain uninterrupted beyond the setpoint
for 100 ms to qualify as a valid trip condition. To
return the alarm to an untripped condition, the
input signal must fall outside the deadband and
remain there for 100 ms. This time-based dynamic
deadband improves setpoint stability.
The KFDA-RTD is outiftted with three LEDs. The
first is a green INPUT LED which indicates DC
power and input signal status. If this LED is not
illuminated at power-up, check wiring connections.
When the input signal is over 110% of the full scale
range, the INPUT LED flashes at 8 Hz; below 0%
it flashes at 4 Hz. Each setpoint has its own red
LED that indicates the relay state. An illuminated
LED indicates a tripped condition.
