GATE Bits – Working of Op Amp Clipper Circuits

Op Amp Clipper Circuits is an important topic for GATE EE and GATE EC exams. Its theory is very easy to understand. What makes it even important is that you can quickly solve it during the exam, earning easy marks. So make sure to go through this informative piece to ensure good marks in GATE

2016 exam. We have also learnt the workings of an op amp clamper.

Learn the Working of an Op Amp Clamper

Op amp circuits that remove part(s) of the input signal as per requirement are called Op Amp Clipper

Circuits. The clipping level is determined by the reference voltage V ref

, which should be less than the op amp input voltage i.e. V ref

< V in_max.

Working of Op Amp Clipper Circuits

We will explain the working of an Op Amp Clipper Circuit through a positive clipper. Circuits that

The circuit for a positive clipper is shown below.

Here, V in

is connected to positive terminal while V ref

is obtained from the negative terminal. In this circuit, the portions from the positive half cycle get clipped.

Input Signal

Let V in

be a sinusoidal input wave/signal. Here V ref

is positive (constant) dc value as shown in the input.

Output Signal

Functioning

1. When V in

< V ref

, diode D conducts because the output voltage of op amp becomes negative w.r.t

diode, leading to conduction ? V out

= V in

2. When V in

> V ref

then V id

= V in

– V ref

> 0 ? Diode D stops conducting due to reverse bias. Hence

V out

= V ref

until V in

> V ref

.

3. When V in

falls below V ref

again, then V out

= V in

. This case is true for the negative cycle as well.

Variations

Now, we will see the clipper circuit for V ref

< 0 (Notice the difference in both circuits). Same process will be followed as before but since V ref

< 0, the output wave form will be different.

Diode D conducts for V in

– V ref

> 0 and is reverse biased for V in

– V ref

< 0.
