A freeform lens normally has a spherical front surface and a complex, three-dimensional back surface which incorporates the patient’s prescription. In the case of a freeform progressive lens, the back surface geometry includes the progressive design. The freeform process utilises semi-finished spherical lenses which are readily available in a wide range of base curves and indices. These lenses are accurately machined on the back side using state-of-the-art generating and polishing equipment to create the exact prescription surface. • the front surface is a simple spherical surface • the back surface is a complex three-dimensional surface 04 | 05 Technology for freeform lenses Custom: The Satisloh & Crossbows freeform solution General benefits • Provides the flexibility to offer a wider range of high level products, even for the smaller optical laboratory • Only requires a stock of semi-finished spheres in each material from any quality source • Lab management is simplified with significantly fewer SKUs • Progressive surface is closer to the eye - providing broader fields of view in the corridor and reading area • Accurately reproduces the intended progressive design • Prescription accuracy is not limited by the tooling steps available in the laboratory • Accurate prescription alignment is guaranteed Special benefits • Provides technically advanced, low distortion soft aspheric designs • A range of designs which easily fit a wide selection of frame shapes and sizes • Designs provide superior comfort with fast and successful adaptation • New indices or designs can be added with a software upgrade • Available in an extensive range of materials and indices • Variable design decentration option allows the use of smaller blanks, resulting in thinner and lighter lenses • Can also operate with circular or elliptical crib shapes providing the thinnest and lightest lenses • Special curve control in the reading area for flatter, more cosmetically appealing lenses • Provides exact lens thickness control at any point - ideal for rimless frames • Incorporates both prism thinning and prescription prism • Allows capability to create your own brand name Advanced features • EyeView technology: Multipoint ray-tracing giving improved overall performance which is consistent over the full range of prescription powers • Optics First: Patented premium progressive lens design for superior comfort • Compensated prescription: adjusts lens prescription for back vertex distance, pantoscopic tilt and face bow • Blended edges: flattens the concave curvature to provide a reduction in edge thickness • Variable inset: adjusts inset for different near viewing distance, back vertex distance, lens power and monocular pupillary distance Freeform Lens Design Characteristics Satisloh & Crossbows’ Custom progressive designs are characterised by their large clear distance, intermediate and reading areas and low rates of change of astigmatism. They do not have the all-round capabilities of a normal progressive lens, but do excel in carefully selected areas. Whether you require a lens for playing music, computer use, driving, cooking or reading, there is a Custom Lifestyle product for you. In addition to normal progressive lens wearers, there are also designs that are suitable for: • alleviating eye strain associated with near and intermediate work for the non-presbyope • controlling the advance of myopia in young people 20 | 21 Custom Office • • • • • A superior design of office progressive lens Low distortion soft aspheric design Individual designs for left and right eyes Variable design decentration Eight dynamic powers available The Custom Office freeform lens is designed primarily for use in an office-type environment, however it also functions well for any task where intermediate and reading vision is of paramount importance. It is not a traditional progressive design, but rather is an alternative to a reading lens, providing clear vision for reading and intermediate viewing. The main differences between a reading progressive and office design are as follows: a reading lens allows a presbyope to have clear near vision, but renders anything beyond this distance out of focus. A progressive lens allows clear distance and near vision connected by a corridor of intermediate vision. An office lens has a reduced width of distance area and normally has a smaller change in power than a conventional progressive which results in a much wider central field and a reading area with very low distortion. The wide range of dynamic powers allows the ideal choice to be made for all reading additions up to 3.00 dpt and also allows the user to benefit from fully corrected reading and intermediate vision. The distance vision will be restricted but will be more than adequate for use in an office environment. The design may help to reduce eye and neck strain associated with long term use of computers. The power changes from the distance prescription to the reading prescription over a small region which makes the bifocal segment almost invisible. This results in exceptionally wide and large distance and reading areas compared to progressive lenses. This range is available in a wide selection of material types and indices. Custom Single Vision lenses minimise unwanted astigmatism associated with conventional single vision lenses. Using EyeView technology combined with Prescription Compensation results in a lens with superior optical performance, not only on the horizontal and vertical axes, but over the entire lens surface. There are also benefits to be gained both in terms of thickness and cosmetic appearance as flatter base curves can be used without sacrificing optical performance. 26 | 27 Standard Single Vision Custom Single Vision This analysis shows the unwanted astigmatism of two different single vision lenses, one spherical and one toric over a range of gaze angles. When the same analysis is done on Custom Single Vision lenses, nearly all of the unwanted astigmatism that was in the standard single vision lenses is no longer present. This reduction in aberration is achieved not only on the horizontal and vertical axes but over the entire lens surface. The differences are particularly marked towards the periphery of the lens compared with the conventional single vision lenses. Once the eye moves away from the central viewing position and looks obliquely through the lens, unwanted astigmatism is present. spherical toric 30 30 20 20 spherical toric 30 30 20 20 10 10 0 0 -10 -10 -20 -20 Key 0.7 - 0.8 dpt 0.6 - 0.7 dpt 10 10 0.5 - 0.6 dpt 0 0 0.4 - 0.5 dpt 0.3 - 0.4 dpt -10 -10 -20 -20 0.2 - 0.3 dpt 0.1 - 0.2 dpt 0.0 - 0.1 dpt -30 -30 -20 -10 0 10 20 +4.00 lens 30 -30 -30 -20 -10 0 10 20 -30 -30 30 +4.00 -2.00 lens -20 -10 0 +4.00 lens 10 20 30 -30 -30 -20 -10 0 10 20 30 +4.00 -2.00 lens Power Range Typical power range: +8.00 dpt to -10.00 dpt, up to -4.00 dpt cylinder (depending on range of semi-finished spheres) Index 1.498, 1.53, 1.56, 1.586, 1.60, 1.67 and 1.74 Single Vision Aspheric Custom Single Vision Freeform Lens Design Technical Information • Software installed on freeform customer’s computer • Software runs on local standard PC with Windows XP Service Pack 2 or newer • Software provided complete with USB license key • Order entry using a number of lab management systems including Satisloh’s AF-Client or manually • Maintenance and updates provided via electronic transfer • Pre paid design fees are transferred electronically • Low limit credit warning 28 | 29 Range at a glance Silver Package Gold Package Platinum Package z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z Custom 14, 16, 18 Good standard progressive range where the optician chooses the corridor length.
