Ruth Ann Vleugels, MD, MPH
Ruth Ann Vleugels, MD, MPH, serves as Director of the Autoimmune Skin Disease Program at Brigham
and Women’s Hospital and Co-Director of the Rheumatology-Dermatology Clinic at Boston Children’s
Hospital. Her clinical and research interests center on autoimmune connective tissue diseases in both
children and adults, as well as on the intersection of dermatology and systemic disease. Her clinical
research, which focuses on rare autoimmune skin diseases and emerging medical therapies, has been
supported by a Medical Dermatology Career Development Award from the Dermatology Foundation.
Dr. Vleugels developed and serves as the Program Director of a year-long Dermatology-Rheumatology
Fellowship, which is the only formal training opportunity of its kind nationwide. She is passionate
about teaching and medical education and therefore completed a Rabkin Fellowship in Medical
Education and serves as the Associate Director for Education at Brigham and Women’s Dermatology
and the Course Director of the Pathophysiology of the Skin Course at Harvard Medical School. She has
received numerous teaching and mentoring awards from both Harvard Medical School and Harvard
Dermatology.

Luis Gonzalez Vales, PhD

A history major, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Puerto Rico, Dr. Gonzalez
Vales earned his Masters from Columbia University in New York, where he also completed doctoral
courses. He was a professor of history at the University of Puerto Rico and associate dean of the
College of General Studies Río Piedras Campus, University of Puerto Rico. He served as executive
secretary of the Council for Higher Education and was appointed by the Legislature of Puerto Rico and
the Governor as Official Historian of Puerto Rico.
Dr. Gonzalez Vales is the director of the Puerto Rican Academy of History and member of the Academy
of Arts and Sciences of Puerto Rico. He is a corresponding member of the Real Academia de la
Historia, a member of merit of the Portuguese Academy of History, Corresponding Member of the
Hispanic American Royal Academy of Arts, Sciences and Letters of Cadiz and corresponding member
of several Academies of History of Latin America.
He received in 1995, an honorary doctorate from the Pontifical Catholic University of Ponce, Puerto
Rico, and was named Humanist of the Year by the Puerto Rican Endowment for the Humanities in
1999. Parallel to his university management, he pursued a military career that reached the rank of
Major General of the United States Army.

Amy MacDonald, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist who lives in Batavia, Illinois. In addition to
her psychotherapy and coaching practice, she leads workshops on self-awareness, interpersonal
effectiveness, work-life thriving, leadership, communication, conflict resolution and building an
optimal satisfying life. She will be speaking. on self-awareness in professional relationships. This
training will focus on gaining a better understanding of the ways people relate, think, perceive, and
behave in personal and professional settings by· identifying key factors that clarify the role of self
and others in both productive and conflict interactions and with the use learning tools to address
common relational problems.

“When I Was A Puerto Rican” by Esmeralda Santiago
In her book “When I Was A Puerto Rican” Esmeralda Santiago tells the story of starting life in a rural
village in Puerto Rico where she could smell the mango trees at night and pick the juiciest guavas
from a bush when she needed a snack. She describes what her life was like in the fifties living with
many siblings. As the oldest she often helped her mother care for them, and her father with building
projects. We meet her parents, extended family, neighbors, and school community and experience her
joys and frustrations of being a jibaro (country dweller). Still, the family continually tries to improve
their lot, fighting poverty, accidents, and marital strife.
Puerto Rico is unique as an American territory where the citizens are free to travel to the mainland
US. When Esmeralda’s parents split, her mother and all seven children join the grandmother in New
York City and a new life begins in the barrios of Brooklyn. Again, Esmeralda fills the pages with the
hot fragrance of salchichas (sausages) and her fear of being an immigrant adolescent trying to learn
English and stay away from dangerous situations. She comes to hate the barrio, but, remarkably, finds
a way out. How Esmeralda gets accepted to the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan is a
funny story. After graduating from there she goes on to Harvard College in Boston.

MEETING REGISTRATION
ACCREDITATION
The Board of Directors has established an Annual Meeting
registration fee of $645.00 and a spouse/guest fee of $445.00.
Accompanying children must be registered at $200.00 each.
A physician spouse/partner who accompanies the physician
and who would like CME Credit must attend the educational
session and pay the member registration fee.
This activity has been planned and implemented ina ccordance
with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation
Council for Continuing Medical Education(ACCME) through the
joint sponsorship of Eastern Virginia Medical School and The
American DermatologicalAssociation. Eastern Virginia Medical
School is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing
medical education forphysicians.
A $150.00 discount will apply to those members and spouse/
guests who have submitted their registration materials and
payment by the September 7, 2015. There are NO discounts
available if complete registration materials and payment are
NOT received by that time. Registrations received on or after
September 7, 2015 are increased to $795.00 for members and
$595.00 forspouse/guests.
CREDIT DESIGNATION
Eastern Virginia Medical School designates this liveactivity for
a maximum of 13.0 AMA PRA Category1 CreditsTM. Physicians
should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of
their participation in the activity.
DISCLOSURE OF CONFLICT OF INTEREST
Registration for members includes admission to all general and
executive sessions, daily breakfasts, opening reception, The
Dinner Honoring NewMembers, joint session with members
and the President’s Dinner on Saturday. If you wish to register
a spouse/guest,please indicate his/her name on the advance
registration form. The spouse/guest registration entitles
admittance to the spouse/guest breakfasts, opening reception,
Literary Discussion, Dinner Honoring New Members, joint
sessions with members and President’s Dinner on Saturday.
Registration is required for children and they will be identified
with a special badge. Children’s registration includes opening
reception and breakfasts only.
Members and guestsa re reminded that conflict of interest
disclosure is required of all speakers and participants. Speakers
from the audience are also required to indicate any relevant
conflicts of interest if they discuss a given topic.
BYLAWS ARTICLE III, SECTION 4(B.1)
If any Active Member shall fail to attend at least one (1)
Annual Meeting out of any three(3) consecutive Annual
Meetingsw ithout anexcuse acceptable by the Board of
Directors, such member’s membership shall terminate upon
presentation by the Secretary to the Board of Directors of a
report of such failure. This reports hall be presented to the
Board of Directors at their next meeting following the Annual
Meeting at which the delinquency became complete and
such member or members shall be notified by mail of the
termination of their membership.
NEW THIS YEAR FOR THE PRESIDENT’S DINNER
Due to the large number of members signing up for the
President’s Dinner and then not attending, we will be
collecting a 50.00 refundable deposit, per person, attending
the Dinner which will be refunded to you when you check in at
the Cocktail Reception.
ADMINISTRATIVE REGULATIONS
Attendance at the scientific programs of the annual
membership meeting shall be limited to members,
spouses/guests of members and guests invited by the
Board of Directors.
CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS
Refunds, less a $50 administrative fee, will be refunded upon
written notice of cancellation. In order to qualify for a refund
of fees, cancellation notice must be received in writing to the
headquarters office no later than October 1, 2015. According
to standing policy, reaffirmed by the Board of Directors on
February 3, 2011, there will be no refunds after the October
1, 2015 cut-off date. Please note, there is no provision for
partial registration fees or refunds for activities not attended.
