Engineering Technology Electrical Engineering Technology Program Summary The mission of the Engineering Technology Electrical Engineering Technology at Central Ohio Technical College is to produce technically trained personnel who understand the electrical and electronic aspects of systems. On the electrical engineering technology side, courses will prepare the students to develop, test, and supervise manufacturing of electrical equipment such as electric motors, radar and navigation systems, communications systems, and power generation equipment. On the electronics side the courses will prepare students to develop electronic equipment such as computers, computer networks, automated systems, broadcast and communications systems—from portable music players to global positioning systems (GPS). Graduates will also acquire knowledge in the IT related field through technical elective courses. These technicians will play a key role in many aspects of today’s highly technical environment, and they are prepared to assume leadership roles. Electrical Engineering Technology awards the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Engineering Technology. The curriculum covers: Basic Electricity Basic Analog & Digital Circuits Computer Systems Computer Network Systems Data Communications Circuits & Systems Radio Frequency Circuits Students learn in the classroom and in hands- on laboratories that use a mixture of actual components and computer simulations for microprocessors and Multisim software for circuit simulation. To accommodate working students, most courses are available during the evening, and students may enroll full or part-time. Program Educational Objectives Program Educational Objectives describe what graduates are expected to know and be able to do after graduation or with a few years of experience. Successfully apply fundamental mathematical, scientific, and engineering technology principles in formulating and solving electrical engineering problems. Successfully apply the procedures and steps for diagnosing a problem. Work competently in one or more core electrical engineering technology areas of practice. Develop improved skills and new skills to enhance the state of their practice in a dynamic professional environment. Work effectively and conduct themselves ethically in their professional environment. Acquire new knowledge by being a member or part of professional organizations and keeping themselves up to date of the new advances in the electrical engineering technology field. Career Opportunities COTC graduates can expect to: Custom-build and maintain computers and computer networks cotc.edu Install cable & wireless data communication systems Maintain telephonic and computer networks, and security systems Evaluate and test products using measuring and diagnostic devices to adjust and repair equipment; Set up, install, and operate programmable logic controllers used in manufacturing operations. The most recent graduate survey of COTC students indicated very good employment in electrical engineering technology. Important Student Characteristics Basic computer skills Interest in working in teams Logical Motivated to tinker Transferability Electrical Engineering Technology graduates are eligible to complete their technical bachelor’s degree at several Ohio universities. Examples include Miami University, Ohio University’s Bachelor’s in Technical & Applied Studies program, and Kent State’s Bachelor of Science in Technology. Also, Franklin University and Mount Vernon Nazarene University offer 2+2 programs in Business Management and other majors See reverse side for more information. How do I Start?
