ESM protective measures conforming to VDE/EN standards
The systems for training in protective measures provide ideal support for theoretical and practical instruction, i.e.
skills from both these areas are imparted here. Here it is possible to investigate the effects of dangerous
conditions, which would be forbidden in practice, without any risks. In addition, the models depict the design and
principles of original components and allow for training of important techniques and procedures. The main topics
are organised hierarchically, as follows:
Standards and terms pertaining to protection technology
Network systems (for instance, TN, TT, IT)
Protection against lightning and excess voltage
Checking electrical appliances after maintenance
Carrying out tests on built-in systems
Systematic trouble-shooting methods and developing fault finding strategies
Evaluation of measurement readings
Preparation of measurement reports

ESM 7 Investigation of network symmetry and quality
ESM 7 Investigation of network symmetry and quality
Use of many electronic appliances, energy saving lamps, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and regenerative
energies is posing new problems to electricity providers. For this reason it is important to plan the loads on
wiring logically and properly. Symmetric loading of mains networks should be one aspect taken into
consideration for any wiring installation. In addition, the wide variety of electronic components is causing more
and more disturbance to mains symmetry and affecting the quality of the network. This experiment board is
intended to convey the key aspects regarding use of switched-mode power supplies, incandescent or energy
saving bulbs as they affect mains quality. All the investigations are carried out at mains voltages of 230/400 V
and 50 Hz frequency. This ensures that all the results can be reproduced on a real mains network.
Training contents:
Familiarisation with single-phase and multi-phase systems
Relationships between current, voltage and power in coupled systems
Ways of depicting coupled systems, e.g. vector diagrams
Load on the neutral conductor due to symmetric and asymmetric loads
Effects of disturbances on network symmetry
Evaluation of network disturbances via network analysis
Investigation of neutral loading by the third harmonic
Design and effects of various rectifier circuits

Non-sinusoidal current consumption by electronic equipment,
running up to speed of large electric motors and asymmetric
distributions of load or circuitry can result in damaging feedback to
the mains network and cause its quality to diminish. Similar
symptoms can be seen, though, as a result of self-induced quality
problems such as incorrectly sized cabling, non-observation of
selectivity features or installation of PEN conductors.
In order to detect and evaluate the effects, it is vital to carry out a
detailed network analysis by measurement.

The mains analyser allows for measurement and display of all
relevant mains parameters. It is capable of measuring voltage and
current for one, two or three phases, along with the neutral,
simultaneously. Display and operation are via menu on a liquid
crystal display or via the built-in Ethernet port. The “Smart Meter“
operates as a digital electricity meter and measures electricity
consumption at the end points of the mains network, as well as
being able to turn consumers on and off depending on
circumstances.

USB-Ethernet adapter provides simple network access without
having to install expansion card. The adapter is thus well-suited
especially for cases where there are no more slots available in the
PC or the housing should not be opened. This adapter is also an
alternative for notebooks: instead of a PC card with an Ethernet port
the adapter offers a universal connection option for all PCs with USB
interface.
USB 2.0 high-speed device
Downward compatible with USB 1.1 and 1.0 Host controllers
Compatible with IEEE 802.3u, 10/100 Base-T and TX
Supports both full and half-duplex mode on Ethernet interface
