Spray painting is a fast and easy way to complete your projects. But before you add that first coat,
make sure you have prepared your surroundings, your project surface and have adequate ventilation.
Take a moment prior to spraying and review these
10 simple tips to ensure your
spray painting project is a success!
1. A clean, dry surface is important. Ordinary household detergents or standard paint thinner (mineral spirits) usually
do the job. Be sure to sand or scrape, if necessary and use a primer on unpainted surfaces whenever possible. Glossy or hard surfaces such as polyurethane paints should be sanded to improve adhesion. Remove rust with a wire
brush or by sanding.
2. Use aerosol paints and coatings in good weather, ideally when temperatures are 50°F to 90°F, and relative humidity is
below 85%. Avoid painting in direct sunlight and hot, humid weather. 3. Be aware of re-coat times stated in the directions on the can.
4. It’s a good idea to test your paint or spraying techniques in an inconspicuous area before beginning your project.
A smooth, even application is important. Aerosols filled for Valero come with flat fan spray nozzles for easy
side to side applications.
5. Always begin and finish spraying off the object, using an even side-to-side motion with each pass overlapping your
spray pattern by about one-third. Do not hold the can to far from surfaces or dry spray may occur.
6. Take your time. Use thin, multiple coats instead of one thick coat.
7. Avoid overspray by masking exposed areas with tape or use a drop cloth. When spraying outdoors, be aware of wind
direction so as not to get overspray on cars, pedestrians or adjacent surfaces. Use a spray shield and masking tape of
adequate size or large enough to catch overspray on areas not intended to be painted such as concrete drives.
8. Vapors are harmful, so avoid continuous breathing of spray. Wearing respiratory protection is also helpful –
most hardware stores sell a variety of painting masks.
9. Clean spray valve after use by turning can upside down and spraying for 5 seconds. This helps prevent the
spray tip from clogging before next use.
10. Read directions thoroughly before beginning your project.
