A
s a group project for the May/June 2004
(#97) color-themed issue of Quiltmaker
magazine, the QM staff each made two
8 1/2” x 11” quilts from original designs.
The challenge was to interpret motifs in
different ways, using color.
See the May/June 2004 issue of Quiltmaker
to see both color versions of each design,
then create your own experiment with these
free patterns from the QM staff.
If you missed the May/June 2004 issue,
or are not yet a subscriber to Quiltmaker,
back issues may still be available at

pattern for her color challenge quilt. Use the
patch A pattern piece shown below and the
foundation pattern on the next page to re-create
Kim’s quilt. Please note that the foundation
pattern is slightly smaller than the original quilt
for easier printing on a home computer.
Foundation pattern is the reverse of the finished

Referring to the diagram and using the white area for flowers,
the gray for the "vase" and the dark area as background,
audition patches on a design wall.
The bouquet will look best with large flowers in the center
and smaller flowers and leaves near the edges.
When you are satisfied with the arrangement, join the patches
to make horizontal rows and then sew the rows together.

rin Wilcoxon, Art Director for
E
Quiltmaker magazine, chose a
favorite summer memory for her
color challenge quilt. Erin started
with a family photo, then simplified
the image into basic shapes. In this
case, the horizon line, waves and
different tones of sand on the beach
became the basis for a foundationpieced pattern. Figure placement
was indicated with vertical lines.
Erin stitched the foundation first,
then appliqued the figures, using
strips of fabric.
