ARMSTR ONG ’S P HILOS OPHIES
SERVICE
TOTAL CEILING SOLUTIONS
Suspension systems are manufactured in three European
plants, strategically located to serve all our European
customers. Additionally, both Armstrong and WAVE can draw
upon their global manufacturing capabilities for both speciality
products and manufacturing support.
In addition to WAVE’s manufacturing sites, Armstrong stocks
suspension systems in distribution centres throughout Europe.
This allows our customers the convenience of mixed product
shipments, combining suspension systems with other
Armstrong ceiling products, optimising bulk shipments direct
from their manufacturing locations.
The suspension system product range forms an integral part of
Armstrong’s total ceiling solutions policy. Armstrong now
offers its customers and specifiers a complete range of ceiling
panels including mineral, soft fibre, wood and metal and a
wider choice than ever of suspension systems. Armstrong can
provide solutions for all elements in today’s challenging
construction environments.
QUALITY
Suspension systems are manufactured for Armstrong both by
its joint venture company WAVE (Worthington Armstrong
Venture) and through various alliances with other companies
who are regarded as specialists in their fields of engineering.
WAVE operates on a global basis, and brings to its various
European operations world class practice on the most
technologically advanced equipment.
WAVE
WAVE has three manufacturing locations in Europe, three in
the USA including the facility in Aberdeen, Maryland which is

CE Marking
What is it ?
CE stands for Conformité Européenne, which translated
literally, means “European Conformity”. The CE mark is a
products “passport” for entry into the EEA (European
Economic Area) and indicates that the product complies
with the requirements of the applicable European Directive.
For suspended ceilings, the way in which we must test
and communicate performance for these essential
requirements has been defined in EN 13964 Suspended
Ceilings – Requirements and Test Methods.
For construction products the European Directive is the
Construction Products Directive (89/106/ EEC), however,
this is being replaced by the Construction Products
Regulations (305/2011/EU) which will come into full force
on 1st July 2013.
What does this mean?
The CPD identifies the essential requirements for products
(and total projects) such that they are fit for intended use as:
•
mechanical resistance and stability;
•
safety in case of fire;
•
hygiene, health and environment;
•
safety in use;
•
protection against noise;
•
energy economy and heat retention.
This standard identifies how the ceiling components must
be tested against the essential requirements to identify a
performance classification. It also indicates how the
manufacturer must ensure that their products maintain these
levels of performance on an ongoing basis.
On 1st July 2007, it became mandatory for all suspended
ceilings and accompanying suspension systems (in the
scope of EN 13964) to carry the CE mark and the
accompanying essential requirement test information.
Since 1st July 2007, non-CE marked materials are no longer
saleable into the EEA.
BRE BUILDING RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT
At Armstrong, we’re proud to be a recognised pioneer in green
practices, with successful methods to produce environmentally
preferable products, prevent pollution and reduce waste.
We’re the only UK mineral ceiling manufacturer with a BRE
Ecopoint profile – an external certification of our compliance
with ISO 14041 and ISO 21930 standards. Our Ecopoint
score in 2007 was 0.10, a significant improvement on
2004, and we’re working on lowering it even further.

VOICE OF THE CUSTOMER
OTHER SYSTEMS
Customer input is an extremely valuable part of our product
innovation progress. Armstrong hold regular voice of
customer work sessions to help develop the most innovative
products and systems to meet the customer’s needs.
Our extensive range of performance grids also includes
Bandraster, Prelude Sixty2, Prelude 35, System Z and

HOT DIPPED GALVINISED STEEL:
Inhibits red rusting better and longer than electro galvanised or
painted systems
•
Installation of grid can start before the building is enclosed
or HVAC system is operational.
•
Long term system performance because entire system is
hot dipped galvanised steel.
PHYSICAL DETAIL
All grids are made from double-web galvanised steel with a
surface finish of baked polyester paint.
STITCHING
All Prelude components
feature a unique
“stitched” construction.
The two metal layers of
the vertical web are
mechanically locked together in a sophisticated in-line
process. Stitching enhances the torsional resistance and
general “feel” of the Prelude components.
THIN GAUGE TECHNOLOGY:
Up to 50% lighter carton weight
than the competition enables
easier handling on site, plus the
added benefit of the Peakform
bulb allows easy cutting of the grid.
DESIGNER GRIDS
Armstrong’s designer range, Silhouette, Microline, Interlude, Axiom
System and Axiom Canopies provide aesthetically enhanced grids.
Silhouette creates a level ceiling surface, providing a flush
appearance while Interlude gives a clean sophisticated visual that
is created by the unique double reveal. Axiom Profiles and
Transitions provide an aesthetic solution for changes in level and
a flush transition with plaster margins. Axiom Canopies are a
perimeter trim system designed to create “ceiling clouds” in
conjunction with full size tiles. Microline is a steel based grid with
aluminium extrusion. The exposed sleeve provides a clean and crisp
visual plus a practical fluted
reveal for flexibility in partition
fixing and relocation.

AR MSTR ONG SYSTEMS
PRELUDE UNIVERSAL MAIN RUNNER
The Prelude Universal Main Runner supports the installation of either
hook/butt cut or stab/override Cross Tees from one simple inventory of Main
Runners. The universal system is available in Peakform design in both 24mm
and 15mm widths.
The Peakform Universal Main Runners feature a firm, quick and easy
assembled Main Runner to Main Runner / bulb-to-bulb connection. Metric
sized Main Runners are slotted at 100mm centres for more flexibility. Slots are
machined to receive positive and accurate assembly of either Prelude TL and
TLX (hook installation) or Prelude XL2 (stab installation) Cross Tees.
The staked-on Superlock clip allows for Main Runners to be disconnected
and reconnected laterally in low-clearance areas or in the middle of a room.

WHERE INNOVATION MEETS P ER F OR MANCE
SEISMIC Rx® SYSTEM
Armstrong Seismic Rx® System is a fully and independently
tested approach to achieving ceiling installations that can
withstand the forces associated with significant seismic activity
or other severe events.
In addition to earthquakes, there are several other industries with
associated risks (e.g. Blast protection) where the use of Seismic Rx®
System will provide additional protection for the ceiling e.g.
• Nuclear installations
• Defence establishments
• Chemical installations
• Transport installations (with intermittent vibrations)
The Seismic Rx® system provides the additional security required for
seismic resistance using specifically designed elements for minimised
installation complexity with maximum performance.

PRELUDE XL2 “CLICK” INSTALLATION
Prelude XL2 Cross Tees in both 24mm and 15mm widths
feature an advanced stab system that locates with an audible
“click”, ensuring a solid installation at all times. The stab end
is precision stamped from a separate piece of high grade
steel permitting an increased accuracy and economy of
production over the more conventional integral forming of the
Cross Tee ends. A selected range of standard Prelude 15/24
XL2 Cross Tees feature the new Peakform design.
The Cross Tees are inserted to the right of each other
through the Main Runner slots and easily pushed home.
PRELUDE TLX
TLX is a new highly engineered staked-on hook system, with
a patented clip. Its unique steel-based composite material
and shape provide a stronger and level connection, an
improved fire performance and an increased overall
stability.TLX Cross Tees are quicker and easier to cut due to
the Peakform section.
When the TLX Cross Tees are inserted to the right of each
other through the Main Runner slots, the TLX clip provides a
more secure installation.
PRELUDE TL “HOOK” INSTALLATION
Prelude TL Cross Tees in 15mm width feature an integrally
formed hook nose. This popular installation system has been
a feature of Armstrong suspension systems for over 20 years
and its proven ease of assembly and precise butt cut joint
has been a favourite of installers. Cross Tee alignment is
ensured by locating the tees to the right hand side of the
adjoining section.

Did You Know... ?
■ There are 2 types of rooms:
It’s all about Air Quality control:
■ The air penetrating the Clean Room can be filtered
depending on the size of the undesired elements.
- rooms with over-pressure, to avoid pollutants from
entering (dust, bacteria,…)
■ Air can be recycled up to 60 times per hour for the total
volume of the space.
- rooms with negative pressure, to avoid various
contaminants from escaping to the outside (viruses,
bacteria, spores,…).
■ New air is also introduced to avoid a build up in the
concentration of CO2 and maintain enough oxygen for
the people working there.
■ Building materials used in such spaces shall not have a
negative impact on the pursuance of cleanliness and
should preferably contribute actively to a better
■ Operators in a clean room have to wear equipment such as a
clean room suit, caps, gloves, shoe protectors and masks.
CLEAN ROOM
A clean room is a space or a series of spaces where the concentration of particles is controlled in order to minimise the
introduction, generation, retention of particles inside, generally for a specific industrial or research objective, as well as in
healthcare environments. Parameters such as temperature, humidity and relative pressure are also maintained at a precise
level, as defined in ISO 14644-1.
• Clean rooms are classified ISO 1 (cleanest) to ISO 9 depending on the number of particles measured.
• The performance is tested to ISO 14644-1 which determines the particle cleanliness class. Although US Federal
Standard 209E has been officially withdrawn, it is continuously used as a reference.
The following table shows the equivalence between the 2 standards.

REACTION TO FIRE
The harmonisation of technical
standards within Europe, and the
integration of EN13964 (Suspended

means that there is now one series of
harmonised European test methods
and classifications for the reaction to
fire of suspended ceilings.
Products Directive and national
building regulation requirements for
internal linings.
These new reaction to fire
classifications, or ‘Euroclasses’, are
defined in EN13501-1:2007.
The ‘Euroclasses’ rate from A1
through to F, with A1 being the best
reaction to fire performance and F the
worst.
The ‘Euroclasses’ have replaced the
old national fire reaction ratings for
showing the performance of ceilings in
order to meet the Construction
As reaction to fire is one of the
essential safety requirements identified
for suspended ceilings, the Euroclass
classification is one of the mandatory
elements on the CE mark for
suspended ceiling tiles and grids.
Each member state then sets the
performance level required for different
areas and building types within their
own building regulations.
Depending upon the reaction to fire
test(s) conducted, the rating may
include an additional classifications for
smoke production and flaming
droplets. Smoke and flaming droplets
are regulated in some European
countries.
Smoke production is rated from s1
(the least smoke produced) to s3 (no
limit to amount of smoke produced).
Flaming droplets is rated from d0 (no
flaming droplets) to d2 (no limit to
flaming droplets).
STRUCTURAL FIRE PROTECTION
Throughout Europe, there is a
requirement for a building’s structure
to be protected from fire. This is
primarily for the structure to remain
stable during a fire to allow the
occupants to escape and also to
enable fire fighters to work without
threat of the building’s collapse. The
duration of the required protection will
usually depend upon the height of,
and location within, the building (i.e.
typical floor, basement, roof
construction etc), whether there is any
active methods of fire protection
(sprinklers etc) and the type of
construction to be protected (steel
beams, timber or mezzanine floors
etc).
A fire protecting suspended ceiling
system is one of several important
methods of providing the fire
protection which fire degradable
elements of the structure require.
Ceilings can be used to enable a floor
construction to meet the duration of
protection required by the building
regulations that it could not necessarily
provide on its own.
and comparison to similar tested
products, provided this is supported
by an assessment report from a
recognised fire expert and should be
provided with the base test report that
details how the product should be
installed to achieve the assessed
performance. The location and type of
various service elements such as
lighting fittings, smoke detectors etc,
are infinite and the designer and
installer must satisfy themselves that
they can be integrated without
reducing the tested performance of
the ceiling system. This will usually
require a test report from the fitting
manufacturer or an assessment issued
by the fire authorities. Without these
documents the designer or installer
may assume an everlasting
responsibility for the fire safety of the
building and occupants.
The complete construction and
assembly of the test installation is
important to the success of the test,
and Armstrong test many ceiling tiles
for their structural fire performance,
but always on Armstrong grid.
There are many other details of the
test construction that must be
understood and adhered to. These
include:
There are many national test methods
for establishing the structural fire
protection performance of a
suspended ceiling system, as well as
several European norms which are
acceptable in most European
countries. The performance achieved
during testing will be classified in terms
of the duration of protection given,
typically this in accordance with
EN13501-2:2007 for European tests.
However, there is not yet one single
European test method which is
acceptable to all member states.
• whether ceiling tile hold-down clips
were used.
Untested products may be assessed
by reference to the product attributes
These details must be included in the
installation if the tested performance is
• main runner and hanger centres
• the type of top fixings and how the
hangers are attached to them
• the minimum depth of the ceiling
void
• what % of the floor design load is
tested
16
to be realised and they should be
taken into account when writing
specifications for ceilings intended to
provide structural fire protection.
In the UK the fire performance of floor
structures protected by Armstrong
ceiling tile and grid systems is given in
the fire assessment document 173816.
This document is based on a large
number of fire tests conducted on
various Armstrong ceiling tile and grid
types. It provides an assessment of
the performances attainable when
various Armstrong tile and grid
systems are installed in accordance
with the appropriate base fire test and
the permitted installation variations
from that base test.
The tables opposite give a summary of
the performances achievable as stated
in the assessment document and are
correct at the time of going to print.
As products may be modified or
retested it is essential that their
validity is always checked prior to
installation. Therefore, the current
version of the assessment
document 173816 and the relevant
base test report should always be
consulted prior to the installation
of a floor construction to be
protected by an Armstrong ceiling
system.
A full document is always required and
must be read and any limitations
understood. Abridged versions must
be regarded as undesirable as they will
not show the full test details and
construction.
All Armstrong classification
documents are freely available on
request from the Armstrong
Technical Sales team.

INSTALL ATION & MAINTENANCE
SAFETY
Armstrong’s commitment on safety concerns each and every step of
our business:
• in our plants & offices, we have implemented rigorous safety
policies and procedures to help minimise risk
• for our products, for which we ensure compliance with
appropriate European and local safety regulations.
• on the jobsite, safety is crucial for our partners:
Armstrong therefore recommends the handling,
installation & maintenance of our solutions in
accordance with the European standards and /or
local regulations, for the safety of the
installers & of the end users.
GENERAL ADVICE
Installation of suspended ceiling systems should be carried out in
accordance with Armstrong's current manufacturer's recommendations.
For grid systems there are some specific points that should be
considered:
- The appropriate type of Cross Tee for the ceiling tile edge detail
must be considered.
- The grid systems should be installed in such a way that the
loadbearing performance of the grid is not exceeded.
- 'Dynamic' service fittings should be independently supported so not
to transfer vibration into the suspension system.
- Armstrong recommend the use of the 'ladder formation' and all our
loading data is based on the 'ladder formation'. Using the 'Hformation' will give greater deflection for a given load.

POST INSTALLATION
After the installation of a suspended ceiling system it is important to ensure that it is properly maintained and that any
additional works are not detrimental to the performance of the ceiling installation. Maintenance operations must only be
undertaken after the technical impact on the ceiling system has been completely evaluated. For example, hangers should not
be removed, adapted or bent without fully understanding the consequences and taking any appropriate mitigating actions.
Armstrong suspension systems do not need any more maintenance than normal painted metal surfaces. However, if cleaning
is required dust and superficial dirt can easily be removed with a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment.
For more stubborn marks a lightly dampened cloth or sponge can be used, although never use abrasive products.
Some companies specialise in chemical cleaning solutions. These should only be undertaken after a test on a small hidden
area of grid proves acceptable.
Most Armstrong suspension systems can be redecorated, however, consideration should be given to the effect on the fire
reaction performance of the grid. Ceiling tiles should be removed, however, the grid can usually be painted in situ. If a firm of
professional decorators is used, assurances should be sought that the necessary performances will be maintained. It should
be noted that any repainting would invalidate Armstrong's warranty for the product.
For a copy of Armstrong's Suspension Systems Calculation Guide, please contact Armstrong Technical Sales.

LOAD CAPACIT Y MATR IX
Loading is an important property of suspended ceiling grid systems both for the mechanical safety of the suspended
ceiling and its visual appearance.
In the EEA, table 6 of the suspended ceiling product standard, EN 13964:2004+A1:2006, defines 3 classes of
deflection, the best being Class 1 which is L/500 (but no greater than 4mm).
Class
Maximun deflection in mmA
1
2
3
LB / 500 and not greater than 4,0
LB / 300
No limit
A
The maximun deflection is the accumulative value of the deflection of the substructure component and the deflection
of the membrane component.
B
L is the span in mm between the suspension components or the suspension points.
The test method on which the European calculations of loadbearing capacity are based upon is also defined in EN
13964, and considers the influence of both deflection and bending moment.
The individual product pages in the second half of this brochure include a table giving the maximum uniform
distributed load, based on different hanger centres, in accordance with Class 1 deflection, as defined in EN
13964:2004 + A1:2006.
For markets outside of the EEA different deflection limits are sometimes required. The tables on this page show the
maximum uniform distributed load for the deflection limits shown, but taking into account deflection only. These
values are calculated based upon load values determined from laboratory tests in accordance with the EN 13964
test method.
For longer spans, some of the criteria shown on this page may give quite large deflection values. Armstrong
recommends a maximum of 4mm deflection between points of suspension for all grid components, irrespective of
span, for aesthetic reasons. Therefore the numbers in the tables on this page are the maximum loads permitted to
meet the give a deflection criteria (such as L/400) but up to a maximum value of 4mm.

perimeter Cross Tees within 200mm of the perimeter. This is not a
requirement of the Seismic Rx®solution using the BERC2 clip, but
may also be incorporated to provide additional system security in very
high hazard areas e.g. emergency services control centre, where full
functionality is planned post event.

Perimeter Detailing
1 The white Flexible trim has THREE layers of white PVC
coating to avoid the ‘greyish’ visual appearance between
the steel supported zone ‘G’ and the PVC only zone ‘P’.
P

2 The Flexible trim should follow the
same rule of being fixed onto the
wall with 450 mm spacing.

3 These trims are considered decorative elements therefore any grid laying on them will need :
A) A hanger support onto the
grid laid onto the flexible trim
as close as possible from
the edge of the trim.
B) Use the accessory
A WDN 23 G to support
the load above the trim.
Note:
These trims can be used only in curved TOE OUT ( Convex ) installations (19 x 29 section must be installed with the 29 mm
face vertical).
Minimum bending radius : 200 mm.
Minimum environment temperature during the curving operation : 20ºC.
Due to the nature of the PVC coating, these trims do not exactly match our standard black & white colour and gloss.
Fire reaction classification Euroclass F (EN 13501-1) - please check local/country regulations for compliance.
Availability of products may vary according to location.
