This unit standard is designed for those people whose activities
bring them into contact with children, or who have a
responsibility to respond to children in a family/whanau and
foster care setting.
People credited with this unit standard are able to describe:
attachment and its importance, and factors that influence a
child’s ability to form attachments, in a family/whānau and
foster care setting.

Definitions
Attachment – a special and enduring emotional relationship that exists between a child
and their primary caregiver which brings safety, comfort, security and reliability to both
parties.
Family/whanau and foster care includes but is not limited to – kinship care, whānau care,
foster care, and foster homes.

Outcome 1
Describe attachment and its importance in a family/whānau and foster care setting.
Evidence requirements
1.1
The concept of attachment is described in terms of the relationship between a
child or young person and an adult.
1.2
Reasons for the importance of a positive attachment relationship are described
in terms of the impact on a child or young person.

Attachment disorders are described in terms of their types.

Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA,
before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses
of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
