March 2016, Volume 26, Issue 3 SRI Newsletter—Phoenix, Scottsdale—P1 “May I do Thy will always.” STEP THREE IN ACTION The Third Step Prayer remains on my refrigerator year after year—not that I haven’t long ago memorized it, but it evokes a different meaning with each reading starting with the first sentence: “God, I offer myself to Thee—to build with me and do with me as Thou wilt.” I used to think that living the AA program of action was calling my sponsor, going to meetings, conventions, Twelve Stepping, etc. However, I have come to believe that “always” means how I drive a car or a nail, my attitude toward my fellow man, or, as a matter of fact, everything I do, or fail to do—ALWAYS! Bob S. Richmond, IN Here I realize that I don’t know exactly God’s will for me, but I do have a fairly good idea. I am left off the hook here by a sentence on page 85 of the Big Book: “Every day is a day when we must carry the vision of God’s will into all our activities.” And yes, I do have a general idea (vision) of appropriate action as each new circumstance arises. Of course, this may involve many Eleventh Step prayers throughout each day. “Relieve me of the Bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will.” Before learning about the Twelve Steps I had no Idea of what constituted the bondage of self. But then when I did Steps Four and Five with my sponsor he was not fain to point them out. I have come to believe there is an underlying four-part set of grosser handicaps which populate this deadly barrier from truth in drink: Selfishness, dishonesty, resentment and fear. “Take away my difficulties that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of thy power, Thy love, and Thy way of life. “ I developed a good notion of my “difficulties” when I bring to light the many times I have taken the easy path when I knew, absolutely and for sure, that it was not my vision of God’s will. As the famous comedian, Red Skelton, used to say: ‘I just dood it!” INSIDE THIS ISSUE 2 Tradition Three Checklist, Events 3 Steering Committee Chair, Intergroup Liaison 4 SRI Central Office Report, Sandy’s Corner, Phone and Websites Stats 5 SRI Group Contributions 6 PI/CPC Committee Information 7 SRI Business Meeting 8 SRI Business Meeting (cont) 9 SRI Inc. In my mind, do I prejudge some new AA members as losers? Is there some kind of alcoholic whom I privately do not want in my AA group? Do I set myself up as a judge of whether a newcomer is sincere or phony? Do I let language, religion (or lack of it), race, education, age, or other such things interfere with my carrying the message? Am I over impressed by a celebrity, a doctor, a clergyman, and ex-convict? Or can I just treat this new member simply and naturally as one more sick human, like the rest of us? When someone turns up at AA needing information or help (even if he can’t ask for it aloud), does it really matter to me what he does for a living? Where he lives? What his domestic arrangements are? Whether he had been to AA before? What his other problems are? SRI Newsletter—Phoenix, Scottsdale—P2 Events Salt River Intergroup 73rd Anniversary Celebration: SAVE THE DATE!!! Sunnyslope High School, 35 West Dunlap, on May 14th. For more information, please contact Liz J. @ 602-549-0505. Our Maricopa County Service Meeting and GSR workshop on February 16, 2016 was a success. The Steering Committee is looking for two positions, an Advisor- two (2) years of continuous sobriety, and a working knowledge of the Traditions, General Service background helpful, but not necessary. The other position is a Past Chair or Parliamentarian. This position requires six (6) of continuous sobriety, knowledge of Roberts Rules of Order, and a general knowledge of the service structure of A.A. If you are interested in any of these positions, please contact Chandra @ 602-264-1374 or email info@sriphoenix.org for more details of these positions. The speakers for the Christmas Alcothon, Oldtimers, and New Year’s Eve Speakers are all on the Salt River Intergroup Website to listen to if you were unable to attend. You can listen to these wonderful speakers at http://aaphoenix.org/meetings/aa-speakerrecordings/ Well, that is all for now. I hope you all have a happy, joyous, and free month. Thank you for letting me be of service Doug M. Steering Committee Chairperson Our standing committees complied their reports as well as our five Intergroup liaisons, which is reflective in our district Minutes. We had a mock workshop of Roberts Rules of Order in its basic form to familiarize new GSRs with the flow of AA engagement, as well as plenty of food to enjoy for all. Pamphlets and packets are available for new GSRs as well. We discussed our upcoming 2016 Area 03 Pre-conference Assembly to be held April 1 to April 3, 2016 in Tucson which will concentrate on Our Spiritual Way of Life, the Steps, Traditions and Concepts. The panel topics will be out soon and once passed to your home groups please encourage them to review these topics. Because you have a GSR, you have a voice. If your group is unrepresented, I encourage you to elect a GSR so your group can be well informed. You can register online to attend at www.area03.org. You can e mail your intergroup office with any questions, concerns, suggestions, as that’s why we are here for you, at marieyohre@aol.com or info@sriphoenix.org.
