Standard Ave, Santa ana, CA 92705 See and Be Seen Part 2 Install… (800)648-4728 Upgrading the Taillights and Parklights in your Classic! Part 2, Parklight and Taillights In our last Danchuk Update we showed you how to upgrade your sealed beam headlights with the newer, brighter Xenon bulbs so you could see better and farther while driving your Classic. This time we will cover the installation of the new and very cool, LED parklights and taillights. We even install an LED dome light for good measure. There are a number of options you can choose from for an LED conversion starting with the really simple installation of LED replacement bulbs. Next available are LED conversion plates. The new Digi-Tails LED conversion plates (which offer additional options over the standard LED conversion plates) and plug in LED replacement lens assemblies. Also, you will need to replace your flasher with a new electronic unit (Danchuk# 13677) as the lower resistance LED lights won’t work if you don’t… and we don’t want that! Let’s get started. Tools you will need: • 3/8" Nut Driver or 3/8" Deep Socket • 3/8" Ratchet and 3" Extension • Phillips Screwdriver • Flat Blade Screwdriver • Wire Stripper/Crimp Tool • Needle Nose Pliers • Sharp Utility Knife or X-Acto Knife • Silicone Spray or Wire Lube • Wax and Grease Remover To give you an idea of how to install all of the different options for LED conversions, we are going to install the Digi-Tails conversion plates on a 1956, the plug in LED lens assemblies and the standard LED conversion plates on a 1955 and the LED conversion plate for the dome light in the 1956. Procedures for the parklight and taillights will be similar for each LED upgrade option and, of course, some of the procedures will vary depending on which year, 55-56-57, you are working on. Each section will assume that you have already disconnected the negative battery cable from the battery to prevent possible shorts and sparks. Which is SOP when working on any car, right? 2.) Remove the light bulb from the socket. Parklight Instructions Digi-Tails 1956 Parklight Conversion Danchuk # 17195 3.) Remove the pigtail from the back of the parklight housing. 1.) Carefully place the housing over a vice that is opened up wide enough for the insert to fall through. Place the 3/8” extension, fat-side down onto the brass insert. With your hammer, gently tap the extension against the brass insert. The brass insert will pop out. 6.) Feed the wires for the LED panel through the hole in the back of the parklight housing and place the LED panel inside the housing. 7.) Replace the lens gasket with a new one (we like to paint ours silver so t h e y d o n’ t show through the clear lens) and reinstall the lens on the housing. 2 Newsletter 20.1 8.) With your needle nose pliers remove the blue and purple wires from the grey connector on the core support and cut off the brass connectors. Then remove the stock parklight wires from the tube. 9.) Using your silicone spray or wire lube, lubricate inside of the wire harness tube. Feed the wires from the LED panel thru the big end of the tube and slide the tube onto the back of the parklight housing. 10.)Remove the old rubber seal from the back of the parklight housing and replace it with a new one. Install the new seal with weatherstripping adhesive per the directions, placing the seal seam at the bottom of the housing. 11.) Re-install the parklight housing onto the backing plate and re-install the nuts, tighten them with your 3/8” socket and ratchet. 12.) Feed the wires from the parklight through the grommets on the inner fender and the core support. Crimp the supplied connectors onto the ends of the new wires. 13.) Slide the male blade connectors on the new wires into the grey connector on the core support (blue where the blue wire was and brown where the purple wire was). Ground the black wire where the other wires are grounded on the core support. That’s it. Reconnect the battery cable and hit the switch, you now have very cool LED parklights. One is “Geraldine” and the other “Blue Angel”. “Geraldine” has a 6-cylinder and is painted Coral and White. “Blue Angel” is well, blue, with a V8. Marty had always wanted a ‘57 but never could quite afford one during his working years. After Marty retired he and Geri got the bug again and in 1995 they were able to do it, buying “Geraldine” in Branson, Missouri. She had 210,00 miles on her. (Geraldine turned her odometer over for the 3rd time in 2011, on Route 66, in Missouri.) They bought “Blue Angel” in September of 2001. Long time Danchuk customers and all around GREAT people, Geri and Marty are very involved in the Route 66 Association of Illinois. Route 66 Association of Illinois is an organization “dedicated to preserving, promoting and restoring the ‘Mother Road’ so it may be enjoyed by future generations of people from all over the globe”. Since they are so involved in the Route 66 Association of Illinois, Geri and Marty travel to many, and we do mean many, events having to do with Route 66 in many, many states. In fact, we would guess that there are not many events that go on along Route 66 that they have NOT been to at least once. And, of course, they drive one of their 57’s everywhere they go. This being the case it is no surprise that in 2005, when they decided to travel from Chicago to Santa Monica along Route 66, they decided to take “Geraldine” instead of another car. (It is interesting to note that they have driven the entire Route 66 route three times and have traveled countless miles along parts of the route, always in “Geraldine” or “Blue Angel”.) At the time “Geraldine” was 98% restored (she was pretty rough when purchased in 1995) and as Marty put it “she performed flawlessly the entire 4792 mile round trip. (They wrote about that trip in our Danchuk Update, Volume 11, Issue Three, which is available for download from our website.) In 2013, Geri and Marty were invited to a wedding to be held in Carmel, California. The decision was made to drive “Blue Angel” 14 Newsletter 20.1 to California via Route 30 and 80 (both are part of the original “Lincoln Highway” which ran east to west from New York to San Francisco) to Carmel. After the wedding they would head down Pacific Coast Drive and Route 1 through Big Sur and eventually take Highway 101 to LA, Santa Monica. They would drive back via Route 66. The trip took 40 days and Geri and Marty drove 5081 total miles. “Blue Angel” never missed a beat. Why? As Marty says, to paraphrase, “It’s an old Made in the USA Chevy Bel Air.” Geri and Marty co-write a series of articles called “Kruzin’ with the Bileckis” for their local newspaper, The Paper (they appear in others as well on occasion). Occasionally, Marty will take the time to send us some clippings of their articles, photos of their trips and other interesting things regarding Route 66. One of the most interesting things Marty has sent, of late, are clippings about a group in the Czech Republic, The Czech Route 66 Association. Geri and Marty have been hooking up with these guys for the past several years and hosting them at the beginning part of their twice-yearly tours from Chicago to Santa Monica along Route 66, along with other members of the Route 66 Association of Illinois. Talk about being Ambassadors for the “Mother Road”. The Czech Route 66 Association exists for the same reasons that similar organizations in the United States do. They love the history of Route 66 and they want to bring this history to the people of the Czech Republic. Zdenek Jurasek, a DJ and radio station owner in Prague who made his first trek down Route 66 in 1998, founded the organization and has been working hard on it ever since. The Czech Route 66 Association attends many events throughout the year for Route 66, both in the U.S. and in Europe, and Zdenek arranges Route 66 Tours. Usually one in the Spring and one in the Fall. They store their van; outfitted with the official logo of the Czech Route 66 Association, at the Bilecki’s house in Illinois and Geri and Marty pick Zdenek and his wife Eva up from the airport in Chicago when they come. They stay with Geri and Marty for a few days and then Zdenek drives the van to the airport to pick up the rest of the current group. There are rental cars waiting for those who don’t have motorcycles, and the ones that are going to get motorcycles they take in the van up to Harley Davidson in Milwaukee. The group then rides the rented motorcycles from Chicago to LA and then give up the keys. (They have an agreement with Harley Davidson where Harley picks up the bikes at the hotel in LA and takes them back to Milwaukee.) Geri and Marty then lead the group through Illinois stopping at various spots that are historical Route 66, as well as other places. Geri and Marty have written about many of these trips in The Paper as well as other newspapers in Illinois and The Bilecki’s stories can be found on various websites related to Route 66 as well. Zdenek has also organized a Route 66 Convention that looks to become an annual event in the Czech Republic (Geri and Marty received an award on their trip to the Czech Republic in 2009 for “Persons of the Year” from the Czech Route 66 Association. Zdenek received the National Historic Route 66 Federation’s Award of Excellence in 2012.) along with organizing the Czech Route 66 Exposition, which was opened in the biggest shopping center in Zlin. The Exposition, which introduced the entire Route 66 with more that 30 boards with photographs, also included a collection of old U.S. gas pumps along with a Ford Mustang, Harley Davidson motorcycles and other memorabilia. You can find video of the exposition on YouTube. And speaking of video, Zdenek’s organization shot a documentary of Route 66 in 2010, which played all over Europe. It was so popular they are doing another this year. You can find the teaser for the new 2014 film on YouTube as well. Feature The Czech Route 66 Association has it’s own website, www.r66. cz, which was launched in 2007. The site has a short history of Route 66, recommendations for Czech and Slovak Route 66 fans as to what to see when visiting Route 66, a forum where Route 66 fans can exchange their experiences and thoughts about Route 66, links to other websites in the U.S. as well as links to museum sites, books etc. There is a photo page with photos from each of the states that Route 66 runs through as well as an internet radio station that plays “music of everlasting roads”. There are Route 66 events all over the Czech Republic and Slovakia and Zdenek is doing his best to promote Route 66 in these countries, and it is very popular. When asked WHY it is so popular in his country Zdenek replied (paraphrased), “Travel in my country was restricted for 40 years of communist rule and the people of my country always thought Route 66 evoked a notion of freedom and a carefree ride. For many Czechs, touring the highway has been a lifelong dream.” We thank Geri and Marty for keeping us up on everything Route 66. And we can’t wait until the next time they visit us in Santa Ana. Till then, in the words of Geri and Marty Bilecki…..”Keep Kruzin” – “If you don’t Go – you won’t know.” Footnote:There are Route 66 Associations all over the world making Route 66 the true, Internationally recognized, “Mother Road.” Phone : (800) 648-4728 • www.danchuk.com 15 Danchuk Manufacturing 3201 S. We were informed on the morning of March 30th that Gene Bruner had passed away. Violet Bruner, Gene’s loving and grieving wife took the time out of her hardest day to date to let us know that Gene had passed while in bed the night before. Gene worked for Danchuk since the mid 1980’s. He came to us with a strong passion and vast knowledge of all things 1955-57 Chevy. Through the years his passion, interest and knowledge of the industry only grew stronger. He held many key positions at Danchuk ranging from the counter, supervision, technical knowledge and special research. Gene was an incredibly kind and caring person.
