In 2013, our business grew significantly in both services - contracting and production - which stretched our management and support functions significantly. This should have been better anticipated and the impact managed more effectively but we have taken a lot of learning from the experience and put in place a number of recovery and business improvement plans. These will help our businesses establish themselves more effectively and bring future sustainability by widening the scope and services we offer. Highlights CR Champions are now established throughout our group and supported in carrying out their responsibilities. We have carried out mobilisation of the new Highways PFI pathfinder 25 year contracts in the London Borough of Hounslow and on the Isle of Wight. The core investment phases see wholescale Highway and Streetscene regeneration of roads, footways and structures, and investment in LED street lighting. Both contracts require wide-ranging “Operate & Maintain” services and have extensive street cleansing requirements, all run via a central operations and communications hub. Performance Alongside many opportunities, rapid growth brings challenges. This included a dip in the progress of our all-important Health & Safety performance, which remains our highest priority. In South West Highways, we had a tragic fatality of one of our operatives. This has been terrible for the family, and for SWH colleagues and the whole community in our company. There has been a thorough investigation by our shareholders, and investigations by the Police and the Health & Safety Executive are ongoing. David Campbell, our Group Health, Safety and Environment 4 Director, is leading an HTMA Centre Line Working Party, which includes the Health and Safety Executive, to establish guidelines for all highways-related tasks on or near the centre line. I was pleased that our management of environmental impact continues to improve as we closely monitor and control our carbon footprint and are reducing our waste to landfill. 2013 was a successful year for Eurovia’s Surfacing, Contracting, Specialist Treatments and Roadstone businesses, with positive orders for 2014. The established Ringway term service contracts were also successful, although our greatest focus was on business and service improvement of our newer Ringway contracts. Ringway Jacobs, BEAR Scotland and South West Highways, our long term Joint Venture companies, all continue to perform strongly. A UK-wide employee survey helped us target what’s working well for our workforce and where we need to do better. A followup survey in 2015 will show us whether we achieved our aims. The principles of corporate responsibility mirror Eurovia’s business values and have informed our approach for many years. Each year, we work hard to push CR strategy deeper into practice, setting genuine targets that require thought, planning and buy-in throughout our organisation. 2013 saw a step-change in our community engagement, as the CR Champions we have nominated within every one of our businesses began to fully exercise their responsibilities. CR Champions are supported by the CR Committee and the Group Sustainability & CR Advisor, and we take their work and recommendations very seriously. In their first year of full functioning, we have found their local knowledge and on-the-spot research invaluable in targeting community support where it is most relevant. CR Champions investigate which parts of a community - particularly the young, the old and the vulnerable - may be affected by our activities and work with them to make the experience positive. In this way, we’ve found schools that welcome our input when teaching children about safety, and helped a hospice rebuild the paths in its grounds using recycled materials from our works. We find imaginative interventions make a huge difference, as long are they are truly appropriate. Eurovia and Business in the Community Since 2009, we’ve had our CR activities rated on the Business in the Community CR index - a rigorous investigative tool that BITC has used to interrogate CR performance for more than a decade. Our ratings over the years vividly illustrate our progress: from an initial bronze rating in 2009, we achieved silver in 2011 and in 2013 were finally awarded gold status, representing an overall score of 90%. It’s an achievement every one of our team can be proud of. “This shows how we are continually developing, innovating and improving our business,” says Scott Wardrop, Eurovia UK Chief Executive. “Ahead of our competitors and peers in our sector, we have been able to show the real, positive impacts we are having as a business and how we are working to be more responsible and to make things better for our staff, the communities where we work, and the environment.” Stephen Howard, Chief Executive of Business in the Community, said: “I congratulate Eurovia UK for achieving Gold because it signifies a key step on the journey, a willingness to rise to the challenge and that they are part of a movement of responsible business in which all companies have their unique part to play.” 8 One year ago, in our 2012 CR report, we set ourselves 12 new CR targets for the year ahead. How have we done so far? Obtain ISO 50001 ‘Energy Management’ standard at our head office. Ongoing - We have set up the energy management system for the site and completed our precertification audit. In early 2014, we will have the system verified by our independent partner and will then roll it out to other parts of our business. Increase the number of STEM Ambassadors within the group, with at least one in each Ringway business and larger Eurovia businesses. Achieved - We now have 18 acting Science Technology Engineering or Maths (STEM) experts throughout the group. This was partly achieved by successfully encouraging graduates to take up the role. Report on energy saved through energy reduction methods. Achieved - 1% of our energy consumption came from renewable sources during 2013. Energy saving measures in Eurovia head office saved 5% of electricity during our campaign in December. Our Business Report on % or volume of water consumed from recycled methods. Achieved - We have captured rainwater in our Bracknell depot, Island Roads and Hounslow Highways offices. This is only supplying 1% of our total water consumption so far. Engage with our stakeholders on Corporate Responsibility. Ongoing - We use our website, publications and meetings to communicate with stakeholders on topics that include, for example, CO2 and sustainable travel, although the full CR agenda is not specifically addressed. We will continue to review communications throughout 2014/15 to ensure we always understand what our stakeholders want to know about us and engage accordingly. Increase skills support to reduce engineering skills gap, supporting school leavers to choose our industry. Achieved - We have continued to take on graduates and apprentices and recognise that spending time with schools and at career development days encourages students to consider careers in our sector. A specific result is hard to measure and we consider that there is more targeted work to be done. See page 11 for information on SWH National Skills Academy. Invest in gully waste treatment processes to recycle water content and reduce waste to landfill. Achieved - See page 46 for the full story. 1 2 3 4 Our Business Fit water meters on all un-metered sites to provide accurate water consumption information. We met seven of the 10 CR targets we set ourselves in 2011 Publish GRI content for sustainability and CR reporting on website in 2013. Our 2012 CR report shows how we met seven of the 10 CR targets we set ourselves in 2011. In 2013, we continued to work towards the three unmet targets, with the following results: Ongoing - All but two of our permanent sites now have water meters. Ongoing - Website redevelopment during 2013 meant that this target was not feasible. Considering this for 2014/15 and joint independent verification. Complete supply chain performance reviews throughout 2013, using our system eSource. Part of these reviews will consider their environmental and social performance. Achieved - Performance reviews are being completed around the business. Engage with our supply chain on Corporate Responsibility. Achieved - CR was addressed at our to our Group Supply Chain Conference 2013, attended by our large, national suppliers. We also ensured that CR was incorporated by both our new PFIs in Early Contractor Involvement meetings. Pilot six retrofit electric hybrid duo-power units on our Ford transit tippers around the Group to see how they perform in ‘real-life’. Achieved - We fitted units in tippers on the Isle of Wight. We could see the results like for like considering territory and work types. 9 Start recording Scope 3 emissions and implement programmes to obtain this data from our supply partners. Achieved - Recording of Scope 3 (Indirect) emissions has now been trialled by Ringway and rolled out to larger Eurovia schemes. This data is gathered on key strains of the Scope 3 criteria, mainly related to waste, distribution and materials. Help the environment by increasing our use of sustainable products/cold micro-surfacing - such as ULM, Ultraphone, Gripfibre and Griptex options. Achieved - In 2013, we sold twice the amount of these sustainable materials as we did in 2011. Make improvements to VC/TC facilities and recording car sharing better. Ongoing - We support the use of conferencing facilities to reduce travel and related emissions but are emphasising computer- and internet-based solutions rather than improving our VC/TC provision. We do encourage car sharing, with dedicated parking in some areas of the business. Our Business Our Business Our achievements 1 2 3 4 Eurovia UK Throughout 2013, we have received numerous awards and recognition for our achievements. Some of these are detailed on these pages and throughout this report. South West Highways has become recognised as a National Skills Academy for Construction. This scheme is led by CITB, where a dedicated project skills co-ordinator supports the Training Centre in Devon. Highway Industry Product of the Year Hounslow Highways was named runner up in the “Quality Improvement” category in the Keep Britain Tidy Annual Network Awards BEAR Scotland, together with Vaisala Limited, won this year’s Highways Magazine Excellence Award for ‘Highway Industry Product of the Year’ for the DSP310 (Mobile Service) Condition Patrol (Winter Carriageway Condition Sensor). 11 Our Workplace Our Business Above: Eurovia Surfacing completing work on the Isle of Wight, on behalf of Island Roads. 1 2 3 4 Our Business Our Workplace 1 2 3 4 Our Workplace Looking after our people in their place of work is our highest priority. We owe our position as a successful, sustainable company to a workforce that remains safe and well despite operating in high-risk environments. Their wellbeing is crucial to our service: to our clients, and to the public. Above: Training for operational staff at Hounslow in 2013. During 2013 Eurovia UK spent over £850,000 on training. This significant investment has been provided to support the start of our new contracts. The start of two new PFI contracts - Hounslow Highways and, on the Isle of Wight, Island Roads - along with growth in Term Maintenance contracts in Shropshire and Hertfordshire, effectively doubled the size of our workforce in one year. The efforts of our group HR team were critical to support a smooth TUPE transfer and positive experience for new starters. We wanted to know more about those new employees, too: the story of our group-wide survey can be found on pages 16-17. “I was concerned about the personal changes with the PFI and my new role. But it’s been fun and I relish a new challenge.” Mandy Clifford, Finance Assistant, Hounslow Highways Keeping safety standards high was an issue inherent in the induction of new staff. Despite our efforts, we saw a rise in the number of safety incidents resulting in time off. Analysis suggests this trend will correct in coming months, being due to the number of people taking on new procedures and ways of working - but we are never complacent. 13 You Said We did We continue to improve and to target our training provision, and to promote “near miss” reporting as a means of preventing harm. Encouragingly, the number of “near miss” reports continues to rise, meaning our staff are spotting and acting on issues that could cause accidents or injury. To support this trend, at managerial level we emphasize the importance of feeding back to employees who raise such issues: a process we call, “You said - We did”. Positively, as part of our expansion we have been able to create brand new jobs and to open up apprenticeships in several geographical areas. Upskilling our workforce and making a local difference remain corporate priorities and we are pleased to provide local opportunities, as you can read in this section. 1 Our Workplace Safety Our Business 1 2 3 4 Eurovia UK HSE Team Eurovia UK HSE Team Each year, we ensure that our safety message is refreshed and re-emphasized in the mind of every single employee. This is never more important than when new people join our group: this year our workforce doubled in size. Our HSE team invested enormous efforts on the first day inductions for our two new PFI contracts. From the moment of becoming a Eurovia UK employee, it is vital that everyone understands and engages with the way we do things - health and safety being paramount. Induction training is in addition to the day-long safety briefing run by each of our businesses at the start of every year. All employees attend. We are proud of constantly progressing the content of this training: tailoring presentations and workshops in response to new information, legislation and feedback, and producing targeted films and training materials to focus on priority issues in new and engaging ways. We also use this forum to gather feedback from our operatives, and we discuss and share data from across our group and industry partners. Open communication about incidents and near misses is essential to improving everyone’s safety and we work particularly hard to maintain and reward a culture of openness about the workplace issues that we face. Safety briefing at Ringway Worcestershire Once more this year, we refreshed and re-ran our successful Drive for Life driving safety campaign, timed to end at Brake’s national Road Safety Week so that our group-wide message is reinforced on a national scale. Near-miss reports and employee feedback raised vehicle reversing as an important safety issue. We responded with focused toolbox talks, including specially produced safety videos for drivers, and renewed emphasis on involving our supply chain in this issue. In this way, we ensure that our safety culture extends to everyone working on our sites. 14 Thinking about Consequences Our Chief Executive, Scott Wardrop, pulls no punches about Eurovia’s concerns in the opening shots of our newest safety film, Consequences. “We have to get to the root causes,” he says, “We have to make a difference.” Consequences - launched on Eurovia International Safety Day in May 2013 - has been shared across our industry, with all proceeds from DVD sales going to charity. The hard-hitting film illustrates the far-reaching impact of a serious accident or incident at work, featuring emotional interviews with real Eurovia employees and their colleagues. Our aim, as Scott makes clear, is to reach every worker with the message that any single safety lapse is completely unacceptable. been donated to BRAKE through £600 has the sale of the ‘Consequences’ DVD Our Business Eurovia UK HSE Team Hand Arm Vibration We are concerned with ensuring that our employees are sufficiently protected from Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), which can affect the nerves, blood vessels, muscles and joints of the hand and wrist of people using certain types of power equipment. Trials have been carried out in selected divisions across the group to ascertain the effectiveness of our control measures. These measures include job rotation, appropriate PPE, provision of training and information, and the selection and maintenance of equipment. The trial demonstrated that our control measures are successfully limiting exposure. Feeding back results to our operatives further reassures them that risk to their health is being appropriately controlled. 1 2 3 4 Face Fit Testing Refresher Face masks are used in areas of our group to prevent inhalation of dust or fumes. Supporting our employees to wear these correctly was a task we refreshed in 2013. Our Workplace Safe Digging at Ringway Jacobs Ringway Jacobs is on a mission to stop service strikes: we want zero unplanned interference with cables, power and water infrastructure when excavating highways and pathways. We invested in testing kits and trained our HSE advisors to test all operational staff and work with them to achieve a well fitting mask. 5 Minutes on safety Following a VINCI innovation award in 2012, we have adopted the 5 minutes on safety approach throughout our business. This dissemination is part of the purpose of the awards and it is working really well in many parts of our business. The key idea of this process is to gather all operational employees together at the start of the shift, spend 5 minutes running over safety for their tasks on the day. 15 We asked operatives to trial two new detectors, the eCAT4+ and Genny 4 - Cable Avoidance Tools. The detectors identify the presence and depth of underground services and store relevant data for up to 12 months, providing a valuable record of when and how the equipment has been used. This insight informs staff training, as incorrect use is easily identified. Since the trial began in summer 2013, we have achieved our aim: zero service strikes by our internal operatives. The successful scheme will now be rolled out across the entire group, including subcontractors. Our Workplace Our Business Ringway Careers Creating Opportunities in Cheshire West & Chester Our contract in Cheshire West & Chester has led to the creation of 21 jobs for local people: 17 permanent roadworker positions and four roadworker apprenticeships. The roadworker role is central to our contract. It involves footway reconstruction, kerb laying and a range of repairs including carriageway patching and drainage. The new recruits will be based out of Ringway’s two borough offices, at Winsford and at Guilden Sutton in Chester. The four apprentices are further eligible for Ringway’s national apprenticeship scheme, which involves two years of college and can lead to a Diploma and Level 2 NVQ in highways maintenance operations. “Ringway prides itself on employing local people and I am pleased that through our apprenticeship scheme we are able to invest not only in the present, but in the future.” Kevan Rudd, Divisional Manager Ringway Cheshire West & Chester 1 2 3 4 Eurovia Careers Stepping up! Career paths within Eurovia “I spent a long while in my early life on the shovel, driving a digger... It’s very important to me that we have people in management who know our business.” Neil Huntington, Regional Director A priority for many of our employees is the clear and attractive career path Eurovia provides within our companies and group. The benefits of this are tangible and wide-ranging: we attract talent through opportunity, we retain it through the rewards of promotion and new skills, we achieve stability and loyalty within our workforce and - not least - we increase job satisfaction for both mentors and mentees as people progress. “We want to grow, from within the orgainisation, people who understand how we want to do things.” Simon Willis, Managing Director In 2013, Eurovia Infrastructure Services produced Stepping Up, a video describing our approach to career progression for our staff from entry level upwards. It shows how we encourage our people in their ambitions: as well as successful on-the-job mentoring, we support qualifications of all grades up to university post-graduate degrees. When you offer the kind of opportunity we do, it’s a good idea to shout about it. All quotes by Eurovia Infrastructure Services 16 “Don’t be afraid to step up. If you’ve got the potential have a go at it!” Mick Wallhead, Foreman Our Business Listening helps us to lead 1 2 3 4 Our Workplace Eurovia UK HR employee survey With a workforce that doubled in size this year, finding out more about our employees their needs, opinions, motivation and suggestions - was a high priority for Human Resources. We led the way with a group-wide employee survey, the first of its kind since 2009. The emphasis of the survey was on people’s attitudes to their career and working life, and on what measures they felt could improve these. The vital data obtained will enable us to focus on areas for change, good practices on which to build, and on support for our management teams in translating information into action. It was fantastic to find that more than 85% of our employees are happy with their team, understand what they are supposed to be doing and feel supported by their colleagues in doing it. Indeed, only 4% of all respondents didn’t reply positively to the statement, “I have good relationships with my work colleagues” - excellent news for stability and morale. We were also pleased to see positive trends in already high-scoring areas such as tolerance of difference, openness about opinions and a sense of being appreciated and well informed. Perhaps even more importantly, though, some of the more negative results give us clear pointers as to where we need to target improvement, and fast. Among our large numbers of TUPE transferees this year, too high a proportion had not received sufficient communication or understood their new responsibilities thoroughly, despite the vast majority - 86% - having received induction training within the first week of joining the company. We have devised an action plan to address the concerns highlighted by the survey, covering communication, training, performance management and employee support. Details of these actions are posted in every Eurovia office and depot and the plan is incorporated in 2014 Divisional business plans. Four task groups will both track and guide progress across the group. We’ve given ourselves just one year to get it right: in January 2015, a repeat survey will tell us how effective we have been. 17 96% 90% 88% 87% 87% I have good relationships with my work colleagues. I get help from others when I need it. I have a clear understanding of my duties/responsibilities. I understand what clients want from the company. I work in a great team. 85% OR MORE AGREE TUPE Employed Employees 86% I had an induction within the first week of joining the company. Our Workplace Our Business 1 2 3 4 Making a date with good health Eurovia UK Wellbeing Looking after our employees’ wellbeing is part of our remit as a commercially successful company: a healthy, productive workforce is simple good sense. We also believe that showing concern for staff health sets up a virtuous circle of care. When we offer people the resources to look after themselves, we find they respond with enthusiasm and are increasingly receptive to further health initiatives. Our annual wellbeing calendar is one example that’s been growing in success each year. The calendar features a monthly health theme that has been selected for its relevance to our industry. Often, these tie in with a simultaneous national promotion or campaign - increasing exercise in “National Walking Month” or quitting smoking in “Stoptober”. Further support for the campaign is provided through our group intranet, NEVA, and a monthly themed poster for display at offices and depots. Importantly, we supply a relevant toolbox talk, and training records show that these are popular and well-used throughout our divisions. “Individuals with the medical conditions we’d featured told us that raising awareness was really good, as many such conditions go undiagnosed for a long period. And after Stoptober, two people emailed me to say they had stopped smoking, which is rewarding to know.” Claire Habbin, Health, Safety & Environment Coordinator The focus of our monthly theme - from January’s “Love Your Liver” to December’s “Flu Awareness” - is on raising awareness of the symptoms of common conditions and pointing out what can be done about them. All too often, people fail to take action through lack of awareness or the belief that they simply have to live with symptoms that they suffer. We emphasize identification of symptoms, diagnosis of underlying disorders, early intervention and proactive steps to maintain good health in those who are symptom-free. These are serious topics, seriously dealt with - but used sensitively humour is an excellent tool for dispelling myths, too. Our “Love Your Gut” week raised some laughs, but with the laughs raised people’s knowledge about the health of their digestive system! 18 Our Business Something extra to support our staff In addition to their core benefits, we use the dedicated ‘Our Benefits’ page on our intranet accessible to all staff - to offer treats, discounts and bargains from a wide range of sources. The themes and events change regularly, and employees can get more for their money on products from groceries to holidays. A share in their future We make it simple for employees to buy shares in our parent company, VINCI. For those who have invested, returns have been positive as global performance continues to go well. As an additional incentive, every purchase is matched with equal shares in Eurovia UK. We believe in our future and we’re happy to share. 1 2 3 4 Our Workplace Eurovia UK Wellbeing Eurovia’s workforce springs into action The year saw the repeat of our enormously popular ‘Steps to Health’ 2012 initiative, re-titled, ‘Put a Spring in your Step’. The group-wide walking competition kicked off in May 2013 to coincide with National Walking Month - also the featured theme on Eurovia’s Wellbeing Calendar - and achieved even greater success and participation than before. Walking fever gripped Eurovia businesses and JVs as healthy competition took hold. One hundred and twenty-five teams entered, involving 625 employees from all levels and areas of the organisation: managing directors and operatives, road workers and office staff, male and female, fitness lovers and sedentary employees of all ages and capabilities. We issued each participant with a pedometer to be worn at all times - every step counts. Team captains were critical to making the campaign work, urging participants to success under jokey team titles they chose themselves. When Eurosigns came up with ‘Muttz Nutz’, who would have guessed they were onto a winner? But by clocking up an amazing 4.5 million steps in just one month, they earned their place at the top. They and five runners up went home with a pocketful of Red Letter Day vouchers and a head-start on fitness in 2013. 19 from top: Teams from ‘Put a Spring in your Step 2013’. Wight Walkers team from Island Roads, The Crocs team from Eurovia Contracting and the winning team Muttz Nutz from Eurosigns. Our Workplace Public engagement Our Business 1 2 3 4 Eurovia UK Public Engagement Aggression from members of the public towards our operatives increased this year: verbal abuse, threatening behaviour, physical violence and deliberately dangerous driving. We are working with the utmost urgency to reverse this trend and protect our people. Our gangs and supply chain carry out essential work that benefits the entire community. They do so in conditions that - being outdoors, in public and usually on the highway network - necessarily involve a degree of risk and inconvenience. The very least they should expect is to be safe from purposeful harm. Eurovia’s response in this crucial area focuses on protection and prevention. We have extended CCTV site monitoring (including using cameras mounted on stop/ go signs) and are working with the police to provide increased security. 6 570 incidents of physical abuse were reported against our staff by members of the public in 2013. near misses reported in total for third party (including general public) motorists and abuse. Working in pairs and gangs provides better protection for our teams and, where appropriate, we negotiate with our clients to eliminate lone working altogether. An intensive programme of employee training, communication and public education complements these measures. Group-wide, a new development team - ‘TM Safety’ - is specifically targeting safety issues relating to Traffic Management. Representatives from across our businesses raise issues from their local teams, which are discussed by the group and changes implemented accordingly. On the ground, we help our staff to keep themselves safe using our bespoke training course, “Highways to Excellence”. This trains operatives in appropriate behaviour and ways of communicating with the general public when working on site, and equips them to handle the challenges they may face. This year, we targeted the course at Eurovia’s new PFI contract, Hounslow Highways. Hounslow Highways Service Director Rob Gillespie points out: “...not everyone sees our tasks in the 20 same way we do. These workshops put us in the eyes and minds of the customer and are designed to help us appreciate their perspective.” We have ramped up the intensity of our communication with the public, focusing on how the community benefits from the work we carry out: safer crossings for pedestrians, safer roads for drivers and provision of surfaces less prone to flooding, for example. We spread our message using the radio, leaflets, letters to targeted addresses, and new media as well as face-to-face meetings with community members, parishes and schools. As long-term members of the Considerate Contractors scheme, we have received awards for our efforts and are confident that public perception is indeed improving year on year. For Ringway, the year opened with preparation for the start of two major PFI contracts, on the Isle of Wight and in the London Borough of Hounslow. We are providing much-needed, immediate investment in their highway networks as well as getting to grips with the very different challenges the two contracts involve. On the Isle of Wight, we have further announced a joint venture with a local asphalt plant that will support the Island Roads contract and the local community. Ringway Jacobs achieved significant success through Considerate Constructors, gaining its second Bronze award in as many years. As recipients of the Considerate Constructors National Company Award, we’ve been recognised for our efforts towards improving the image of construction. Eurovia Infrastructure companies continued to perform well over the year, with Eurovia Specialist Treatments (EST) awarded a two-year contract extension by the South Yorkshire consortium. This is led by Wakefield Metropolitan District Council and includes the Metropolitan Borough Councils of Doncaster and Barnsley as well as, most recently, the City of Leeds. 23 In Wiltshire, where we did not retain our longstanding contract with the county council, we worked hard to ensure a successful handover to the new contractor. We have every confidence that our efforts and those of the long-term employees who transferred to the new contract will provide a good level of service to the community during transition. It was good to have our approach to service recognised by the Considerate Constructors scheme in November 2013. Eurovia received a National Company Award from the scheme this year, which places us in the top 20% of construction companies in the UK for consideration of neighbourhood, public, workforce and environment in our work. We were also delighted to see our companies come out on top in three out of 11 categories at the VINCI Innovation Awards read more about that on page 25. 2 Our Marketplace Eurovia Contracting North MHA Partnership One strength leads to another Our Business 1 2 3 4 Considerate Constructors Scheme 2013 Award Winners Getting better all the time with Considerate Constructors White Building Materials We entered into a new joint Venture in 2013 to form WBM on the Isle of Wight. Good performance in our partnership with the Midland Highways Alliance (MHA) - mentioned in last year’s CR Report - has helped Eurovia Contracting to increase its work. We secured large-scale infrastructure projects on the A57 around Rotherham and in Loughborough, where our contract for the High Street scheme resulted from a successful earlier project. Lesley Pendleton, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet Member for Environment & Transport, said: “This long-awaited scheme will help boost Loughborough’s economy, spark regeneration and improve safety. (Ringway) did a fantastic job on the Eastern Gateway and we are looking forward to working with them again on this project.” Above from left: Paul Lewis, Tony Dougal, Matt Burridge, Neil Huntington, Bill Deards, Alan Lowater & Dave Boswell collect Eurovia’s winning award. The Considerate Constructors Scheme aims to improve the image and performance of our industry: an excellent match for our own values. In 2013, after several years as a member, Eurovia’s determination to constantly improve helped us gain our best ever results. High scores from audits across the group were crowned by Eurovia Infrastructure’s certification for “Performance beyond Compliance”. The company’s work on the A57 Improvement Scheme in Rotherham merited the score, with a particularly high mark for community engagement - 9 out of 10, which rates as “Exceptional”. 24 This company will be centred around asphalt production for the Island and supporting the Island Roads contract. We are committed to upgrading and modernising the plant to make the plant efficient and producing high quality products. Our Business 1 2 3 4 Our Marketplace Ringway Worcestershire Green Apple Award VINCI UK & Ireland Innovation Awards Ringway’s work in the beautiful Cotswold village of Broadway trumped more than 200 other nominations to carry off the Green Apple Environment Award for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage. The VINCI UK & Ireland Innovation Awards take place every two years, following group-wide local innovation awards. Finalists will compete at the International Innovation Awards in Paris against winners from every nation in which VINCI operations. Getting it right in Broadway: Ringway wins Green Apple award Working on behalf of Worcestershire Highways, we implemented an intensive communications regime before, during and after carrying out drain replacement works on the picturesque village’s busy high street. This enabled us to listen properly to local concerns and plan works to minimize the inevitable disruption, keeping residents and visitors well informed. Local people appreciate the result: a long-term solution to the severe flooding that has affected the village for decades. Innovating our way into international finals There were 11 award categories on offer at the Royal Geographical Society in Kensington, London on 24th October 2013, and Eurovia companies swept away with three top prizes. For example, sourcing sustainable materials is high on our agenda. In assessing sustainability, we consider distance travelled, method of processing and final life-span, all of which influence our purchasing decisions. Such priorities have an impact on which suppliers we choose. Helping Supply Chain Partners increase visibility We have an excellent relationship with Eurox, our main supplier of PPE. As a result, we have been happy to promote their business throughout VINCI. It’s not always easy to be ‘green’ - short term inconvenience or simple confusion can stand in the way of long term rewards. But we are in the business of helping our supply chain to overcome obstacles so they, with us, can reap the benefits of better environmental performance: operational efficiencies, real savings, increased revenue and valuable public profile. Eurox is able to develop and expand through the opportunities we afford - a just reward for the good service they help us to provide to our own clients. “Working with Eurovia UK businesses for over 10 years, Eurox has shared growth with both Ringway and Eurovia. We have worked together as a team to develop our products and services, which has since been promoted to VINCI. We have increased our sales whilst continuing to develop our relationship with Eurovia.” Max Palak Managing Director, Eurox Clear approach Our approach to sustainable supply chain management and ethical trading is clear; • We set and communicate standards • We monitor supply chain performance • We have effective processes for tackling problems • We work together proactively to mitigate their impacts • We build capacity to anticipate and meet future demands and challenges. “Eurovia UK supports the United Nations Global Compact and we ask our suppliers to sign up to its ten universally accepted principles respecting human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption.” Keith Aldrich, Group Supply Chain Manager 26 Our Business 1 2 3 4 Supporting good performance Eurovia UK Supply Chain In 2013, we launched eSource, a performance management tool that gives us full visibility of factors such as EMS certification and Environmental Incidents within our supply chain. We invited our larger supply chain partners to the eSource launch so that we could learn from and help each other in meeting stringent expectations in this area of performance. Our newest contracts incorporate our toughest targets yet for reducing water consumption and carbon production, and to meet these our supply chain must support us fully. eSource will feed vital new information into Eurovia’s existing system of performance reviews. Reviews provide a forum at which we and our suppliers pursue improvement together. We identify possible innovations, tailor our operations for efficiency and agree trials of new materials and ways of working that will benefit us all. We have 21 Key Indicators that each supply chain partner will be reviewed against. These cover; Operations, Commercial, Health & Safety, Environmental and Trading areas. 100% of supply chain required for eSource are now on the system. Above: eSource ‘performance review launch’, summer 2013. 27 Our Marketplace Our Marketplace Route to Excellence Our Business 1 2 3 4 Eurovia UK EFQM For nine years, Eurovia UK has subscribed to the EFQM excellence model as a means of assessing and continuously improving our performance. Long-standing businesses within our group now score very highly on EFQM assessments. These scores correlate directly with good safety performance, efficiency and profitability, which we believe demonstrates the long-term value of using the model. We have recently made a commitment to EFQM in our group business plan. Our experienced and specially trained assessors aim to assess each Division regularly. They scrutinise a comprehensive range of areas of our activity, including nonconformances, quality of leadership (both strengths and areas needing improvement), people, strategy, processes, products and services, and results - for customers, our own people, our performance, and society. Each assessment takes place over three days and involves confidential interviews throughout the business. Interviewees are selected or may volunteer. The timing of senior management involvement is important: interviewing staff at this level is most useful towards the end of the assessment period, when they are able to comment on themes that have arisen in earlier interviews. The Divisional Manager’s team also take part in the opening meeting and in the verbal feedback session that closes the assessment period. Where possible, the Regional Director is involved as well. Completed reports are published on our intranet where they may be seen by all our employees. EFQM also involves interviewing representatives from our clients and supply chain partners, preferably from all levels of the organisation. These interviews enable us to gauge their perception of our performance and of the relationship and are recorded and acted upon. Having introduced new businesses to our group in 2013, we saw our average EFQM score fall for the first time in some years. We are confident that these assessments will again improve in time: the Excellence model is useful in a business’s first year to indicate how well core functions have been implemented, and it identifies where most effort is required for improvement. Well-established group businesses such as Eurovia Surfacing gained excellent results. And Ringway Worcestershire, which operates in a longstanding partnership with Worcestershire Highways, achieved the highest score in our group. Our interaction with the communities in which we work relies on thousands of individuals: our people. Near Miss reporting Near Miss reporting is the vital tool that helps us drive down the number of actual safety incidents in our business. So for every Near Miss report we receive from our people in the workplace, we donate £1 to Brake, the road safety charity. Over £18,000 donated to Brake since our partnership began in 2008. We are proud of the enthusiasm with which so many Eurovia and Ringway employees find ways to give something extra to the communities they serve. To lead the way, the group supports charitable fundraising and volunteering efforts with established initiatives such as our matched funding scheme and volunteer day allowance. The benefits of such schemes extend beyond direct support of good causes, although that is an end in itself. Participation increases a sense of fulfilment in our workforce. Those involved often form new and beneficial relationships with our clients, in the community and with other colleagues from within our Group, all of which facilitate communication and teamwork in the future. 31 £10,507 match funded in 2013 That’s a 60% increase from 2102 Olympic inspiration Last year’s Olympics continued to inspire our staff, as evidenced by the number of employees involved cycle-based fundraising events: the Coast-to-Coast ride for Macmillan Cancer Care, raising £805, and a team in the London-toBrighton Bike ride who raised £1,500 for the British Heart Foundation. Walkers and runners raised money too, and you can read their stories among those in this section. School involvement Our involvement in local schools intensified in 2013 as we developed new and engaging ways of teaching children to stay safe around our works. We’re particularly pleased to have introduced ourselves in this way on our new PFI contract on the Isle of Wight, and hope to do more in this area. 3 Our Community Our Business 1 2 3 4 Island Roads All Saints’ Primary School Meeting the next generation Career options on display Our PFI contract on the Isle of Wight involves a great deal of work in residential areas. As much as local adults may consider roadworks a necessary nuisance, many of their children are fascinated by such sites without realising that there are dangers inherent, too. The London Borough of Lewisham’s 2013 Job Fair was attended by more than 2,500 people over two days, Friday 14th and Saturday 15th June. Graduates, students, job-seekers and a wealth of interested parties turned out to investigate the careers on offer - including two genuine vacancies at Ringway, displayed on Lewisham’s Wall of Opportunity. Eurovia Lewisham Job Fair Rebecca Tuck, Island Roads Communications Officer, is leading a programme of engagement with schools that teaches children to stay safe while capitalizing on their curiosity. As she explains: “The PFI is about more than just improving and maintaining the Island’s highways: we really do want to involve everyone in the community in what we are doing.” The Council - our client for a CCTV contract was keen that Eurovia should be a presence at the fair. Our stand was manned by Eurovia’s Public Liaison Manager, Jackie Wellesley, and two former graduate trainees now in permanent positions with us: site engineer Alex James and quantity surveyor James Haig. Other senior Eurovia staff, including John Hatton, Eurovia Contract Manager for Lewisham, took time to visit the stand and engage with local people attending the fair. Our visit to All Saints’ Primary School in Freshwater was timed to correspond with the start of surfacing works in the area. Island Roads staff combined sessions explaining the dangers of roadworks with a project to help pupils engage with our industry. After outlining some basic engineering principles, we led the children in designing and building their own, simple bridges. Among such ‘local people’ was Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, whose job fair walkabout included a chat with Eurovia about our business and the opportunities we offer. “We are always impressed by the behaviour and enthusiasm of the students. It would be nice to think that some of the children we are visiting could, in the future, become Island Roads staff delivering the project!” “Once again I would like to thank Eurovia for helping make Lewisham Job Fair 2013 a great success.” Rebecca Tuck, Island Roads Communications Officer Denise Atkinson, Job Fair Organiser 32 Our Business 1 2 3 4 Our Community Taking safety to school Eurovia Contracting Todwick Infant & Primary School Children at Todwick Infant and Primary school welcomed a rather unusual visitor to school assembly - part of a programme of community engagement undertaken by Eurovia Contracting North while working on the A57 Road Improvement Scheme in Rotherham. In front of 190 pupils, a larger-than-life character called Ivor Goodsite enlivened an educational presentation about the construction industry, and the potential dangers of works sites. The character is a creation of the Considerate Constructors Scheme and used as an industry mascot. Ivor was supported by Site Engineer Dan Ferneyhough, Senior Site Agent Anja Reid and placement student Philipp Richter. Our frequent involvement in this kind of activity helped Eurovia to score an impressive 9 out of 10 in the Community section of the Considerate Constructors Scheme’s ‘Code of Considerate Practice.’ Overall, our performance on the £10.5million A57 project earned us certified ‘Performance beyond Compliance’ under the scheme. Our team’s final task was to judge posters made by the pupils after the school event, either of Ivor Goodsite or depicting a dangerous situation on a construction site. Winning posters are displayed at the site information point, providing a genuine reminder to our staff and the public of the importance of safe behaviour. Learn more about Ivor Goodsite at www.ivorgoodsite.org.uk 33 “The day was very successful with the children taking on the message of safety at construction sites. Our staff report enormous satisfaction from their involvement, as well as unforeseen benefits in terms of work relationships, local knowledge - and fun! Eurovia’s head office is in Horsham, but when approached by the local Girl Guides for help clearing their overgrown campsite, staff realised the project required expertise from across the group. The team that assembled on Tuesday 3rd September consisted of seven head office staff, two skilled operatives from Ringway’s Bracknell depot and a specialist arboriculturalist from Hounslow Highways. Five years’ worth of untrammelled growth had invaded the Guides’ camp, blocking views of an over-shaded pond. Our team cleared weeds and brambles and replaced the broken perimeter fence. We coppiced the ash trees that overhung the pond so that sunlight could reach the area, encouraging biodiversity. We also stacked salvaged wood for campers to use and removed cut vegetation from site for recycling. “I really enjoyed working alongside people from different areas of the company. I’d recommend getting involved in a volunteering day: it’s a great feeling to look back knowing you helped to do something positive in the community.” Paul Tillier, Eurovia Category Manager The Campsite Committee was overwhelmed by the result and our hard-working team felt happy, too. Ravensthorpe, Leighton, Braybrook and Discovery Primary Schools in Peterborough have benefited from Ringway’s involvement in their regeneration. Eurovia tackles Himalayas... near Bristol Ringway helps schools take learning outdoors We worked with Peterborough City Council and The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire to establish interactive outdoor learning space for the children. The AIWF was alerted to the presence of Himalayan Balsam in the grounds of the Grade II listed Oldbury Court estate near Bristol. With the information in place, the group was urgently seeking manpower to tackle the problem. The connection with Eurovia was made by South Gloucestershire County Council, which had good experience of our Give & Gain volunteering days. Sure enough, on 17 June, co-ordinated by Eurovia Specialist Treatments’ Corporate Responsibility Champion, Penny Teall, eight intrepid volunteers got to work removing the stifling plant from the parkland. “This weed is really incredible,” commented Penny after the encounter. “Some of the stems were two metres high and as thick as an arm, but it was great to get to grips with it by the end of the day.” Works involved refurbishing a pond area - including existing pond-dipping platforms and trees - and laying a path between playground and pond. In keeping with the ecological nature of the project, we reused old and surplus materials from recent local schemes: Bridge Street refurbishment and Peterborough town centre. “Many thanks to the team from Eurovia. Thanks to them, we nailed a massive stand of Himalayan Balsam at Oldbury Court - the biggest stems I’ve seen. I really appreciated the help!” “It is great to work with Peterborough City Council and The Wildlife Trust to have such an impact on the schools open spaces.” Neil Green, Avon Invasive Weed Forum Bob Sutton, Ringway Contracts Manager 35 Our Community Our Business Eurovia UK Donation to Brake Near Misses add up to a growing donation Near Miss reporting is the vital tool that helps us drive down the number of actual safety incidents in our business. So for every Near Miss report we receive from our people in the workplace, we donate £1 to Brake, the road safety charity. It’s one of several ways we motivate our employees to be aware, take the necessary time, and notify us of every Near Miss they see. Our aim is that every year, our donation to Brake will grow - and in 2013, we presented a cheque for £4401. Ringway Jacobs also donated £1694 for their 2013 Near Misses. Since our partnership began in 2008 we have donated over £18,000 to Brake. 1 2 3 4 Cakes bake up £400 for charity Ringway Hertfordshire Macmillan Coffee Morning We take partnering with our clients very seriously indeed, and never more so than when there are cakes to be had! Employees of Ringway Hertfordshire worked with Hertfordshire County Council staff on their tastiest project of the year when they baked up a tableful of gorgeous treats for Macmillan Cancer Support. The cakes were sold at County Hall as part of MacMillan’s nationwide “World’s Largest Coffee Morning”, an annual event that has raised more than £75million since its inception in 1990. Across Hertfordshire, a baking competition pitted all four Ringway depots against each other - with Kings Langley carrying off the top prize. Our fundraising effort also involved a dressdown day and coffee bean counting competition at County Hall, altogether raising £400 towards MacMillan’s planned cancer centre in Stevenage. “The work that MacMillan does is incredibly important and affects so many. We are delighted to be able to support the efforts of our staff in organising such a successful event.” Matthew Kelley, Ringway Hertfordshire Divisional Manager £6,095 donated to Brake in 2013 36 Our Business 1 2 3 4 Hounslow Highways Matched Funding Our Community Eurovia Matched Funding Something extra for your effort Cold work for hot pies We’re happy to encourage staff in their fundraising endeavours by adding up to £300 to the funds they raise for good causes. Under Eurovia’s Matched Funding Programme, we’ll match the efforts of any individual employee raising between £100-£300 in a calendar year for a UK charity that fits our criteria. Alice Campion, Hounslow Highways Communications Officer, took full advantage of the programme when she spent her 24th birthday running a half marathon in Greenwich, Southeast London, in aid of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. It snowed in March 2013, but despite the weather seven Eurovia Surfacing employees hiked 10km on behalf of Cotswold Care Hospice in Gloucestershire. As one of more than 19,000 participants, she successfully completed the “Nike Run to the Beat” 21km run on 8th September. Runners in the event, also known as London’s Music Half Marathon, are spurred on by DJs positioned around the course, and were treated to a performance by Jessie J after the finish. The team, based in Quedgeley, took part in the annual Men’s Pint ‘n’ Pie Walk sponsored by Brunsdon LLP in association with Gloucester Rugby Club. Their efforts raised more than £900 for the hospice - an increase on last year’s event. Not only did Alice find training a great way to keep fit, but with our contribution she raised more than £800 for her cause. “We all enjoyed the walk even though it was freezing cold. It was all worth it, as we managed to raise a good sum for the Cotswold Care Hospice.” Mark Todd, Surfacing Co-ordinator "It was a huge challenge for me,” said Alice, “but having all those people support me - including my employer! - was an amazing motivation. I really wanted to prove I could do it. And it was an awesome way to spend my birthday, helping out such an important charity." Participants were rewarded with a hot pie and a pint at the end of the walk, followed by a free ticket to the rugby game that afternoon. Was this the incentive that made all our team finish the walk within three hours - or were they racing to get out of the cold? The aim of the organisers - Peterborough Environment City Trust - was to emphasize that small changes can make a big difference to our world: a message that’s also central to our corporate culture. Ringway was proud to be the Festival’s lead sponsor, and as a major local employer we were happy to get involved on a more personal level, too. “Ringway have been really amazing,” said Ben Middleton, Communities Project Officer at the Peterborough Environment City Trust. “They’ve jumped in and become part of the festival, which is great. It’s exactly what you want from a sponsor.” Promoting our interest in green innovation, we ran a competition in local schools for the design of an electric vehicle suitable for travelling around Peterborough. We were delighted by the range and inventiveness of the children’s responses as they engaged with an issue reducing carbon footprint - that is a daily concern in our industry. On the fantastic sunny day of the launch, Ringway staff donned green t-shirts to run one of the most popular stalls at this lively event. “Seed it up!” - well branded with Ringway banners and information about our company - was designed to focus on the living world. We helped participants to plant seeds in pots, which they took away to tend at home. There was prize on offer for a photo of the healthiest plants, four weeks along. Other activities included climbing walls, music and dancing, circus performers and cooking demonstrations. These themes were carried throughout the festival with cycle rides, walks, picnics and other events promoting healthy eating and active living. In all the fun, our serious commitment to community and environment came though loud and clear. As Suzanne Seaman, Ringway Business Manager, put it: “Ringway’s involvement demonstrates our on-going support and commitment to sustainability and corporate responsibility as a leading employer in Peterborough. Our commitment to volunteering days remained throughout 2013, whilst we didn’t meet our target of 300 completed we did continue to improve. As our new employees become more aware of the opportunities available, we are confident that this activity will increase in 2014. We saw a huge increase in match funding requests from our employees in 2013, where we actively promoted successful fund raisers. Our employees select the charities they support and so we feel that this really helps us to connect with the community through our workforce. Our approach to mitigating these issues progressively over a 25-year term of contract was integral to winning new business. Furthermore, it remains a priority for clients we have served for years. Solar panels installed for Ringway during 2013 have generated enough energy to offset over 30 Tonnes of CO2, or over £7000 electricity charges! In this section, you will read about some of the innovations we continue to introduce to deal with waste, save resources, reduce carbon impact and improve our ability to monitor environmental performance. Gathering and management of accurate environmental data is an important feature of our progress this year, particularly as it is this area of development that most enables us to improve the performance of our supply chain along with our own. Sustainable building for our new contracts is also featured here, as are staff initiatives from across the group. It is part of our culture to focus on individual impact and to encourage our staff to understand how little changes mean a lot - particularly when multiplied across a workforce as large as ours. 41 Our Environment Green garlands for Ringway East Midlands Ringway East Midlands picked up not one but two Environmental awards in recognition of the company’s success in reducing both consumption and waste. Peterborough Environment City Trust established the Investors in the Environment (iiE) awards in 2010 to support sustainable behaviour by businesses. Ringway signed up in March 2013 and, following a site visit from iiE and scrutiny of the company’s use of gas, water and electricity over five years, was awarded “Green Accreditation” - the highest level of the scheme. Better still, the additional measures we were able to demonstrate - such as reducing landfill, re-cycling waste and monitoring use of diesel - landed us a “Great Green Award”, which is purely for businesses that outperform the standard on a range of environmental issues. 4 Our Environment Our Business 1 2 3 4 Hounslow Highways begins as we mean to go on Hounslow Highways PFI Contract We’re working closely with Hounslow Council’s regeneration teams to change the face of the Borough - and green ambitions are firmly embedded in the plan. It’s a comprehensive approach, acknowledging the need for economic growth as well as sustainable practice in generating an improved quality of life for residents. Hounslow Highways is already starting to help. We prioritised street cleansing as affecting people’s lives every day: surroundings matter. A cleaner, better cared for environment is being achieved through a refocused regime that uses recycled water systems. Recent figures from Keep Britain Tidy show that, since the start of our contract, there’s 80% less flyposting, 50% less graffiti and 23% less litter in Hounslow. That’s just the beginning. Currently 40% of cleansing waste on the contract is recycled: we’re aiming for 80%. We’ve increased recycling levels in other areas, too, particularly the reprocessing of excavated materials to use for constructing footpaths. Steps to reduce carbon emissions include the replacement of high-energy street lighting - 16,000 across the Borough with low-energy LED lamps. We use a greener fleet and train our drivers in energysaving behaviour behind the wheel. The reduction of waste to landfill is another area of focus, as is the efficiency of works planning to reduce the number of vehicle journeys taken. Hounslow Highways was named runner up in the “Quality Improvement” category in the Keep Britain Tidy Annual Network Awards 42 Our Business Island Roads Green Travel Plan Moving with muscle-power Employees of Island Roads are getting fitter while protecting the beautiful environment in which they work and live. From the start of our contract on the Isle of Wight, we’ve boosted support for cycling by providing employees with showers, changing facilities and secure bike stores at the workplace, and discounts on bikes and accessories. Partnering on routes to the main office is also encouraged and facilitated. It’s all part of our Green Travel Plan for the contract, which will reduce the carbon emissions associated with employee journeys to work each day. 1 2 3 4 Our Environment Eurovia UK Lean Your Load Lean Your Load leaves a lighter footprint Every year we refresh the categories in our successful ‘Drive for Life’ campaign, which aims to increase driver safety awareness and lessen environmental impact. In 2013, we introduced ‘Lean Your Load’, an initiative to encourage all our drivers of commercial vehicles to assess the equipment and materials they carry with them each day. Our teams took to the task with gusto, slimming loads down to what they really need. As well are increasing fuel efficiency, this good practice leads to tidier vehicles, reduces losses, lessens the risk of slips, trips and falls and ensures that vehicles aren’t loaded past their approved weight limit. The six-month campaign was launched on 28th May at Eurovia International Safety Day, maximizing exposure and uptake throughout the UK group. We were delighted by the widespread participation of our employees, as were our insurance providers. They were happy to sponsor the campaign in recognition of its positive effect in reducing accidents. 43 In a strong field, Ringway Worcestershire carried off the prize in the Lean Your Load category - but Island Roads were winners overall. Our newest contract showed how seriously they take road safety by winning the Young Driver Award, receiving numerous Commended and Highly Commended placements, and providing entries in every single category. 195 vigiroute (driving) incidents were reported in 2013 - an increase of just 29 from the previous year, despite a workforce increase of 2,000 employees. 77,099 miles saved through car sharing and video/tele conferencing in Eurovia UK. Equal to around 22 Tonnes CO2. Our Environment Our Business Strategy and action on 1 2 3 4 Eurovia UK Carbon Reduction We are sticking to our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint by 30% between 2012 and 2020. This affects every business within our group, whether dealing with production, materials, term maintenance or contracting. Eurovia is part of the UK Carbon Reduction Commitment Scheme, in keeping with the Government’s targets for carbon reduction. Further, we have entered our Roadstone asphalt plant into the EU Emissions Trading Scheme. Involvement in these schemes means our energy consumption data is inspected and reviewed by a wide range of independent and expert parties, ensuring total transparency and absolute accuracy on which to base on-going strategy. We strongly believe that good practice leads to good client relationships and helps us win business. New PFI contracts with the London Borough of Hounslow and on the Isle of Wight include stringent requirements for carbon, water and waste reporting, in line with our group-wide strategy for progress in these areas. We are working on the development of a sustainability toolkit that will help us put strategy into action. During 2013, the prototype toolkit was trialled at a number of sites and on selected schemes. Our eventual aim is to progressively tighten sustainability goals, using the toolkit to convert data from recent schemes into baseline targets for new projects, and even on-going projects. Total tonnes CO2e (Scope 1 & 2) The toolkit also helps us to evaluate our full carbon impact - an important advance on measuring straightforward energy consumption. The relevant data includes measurement of energy consumption, waste, carbon embedded in materials and transportation of staff. By using this information to identify and incorporate carbon-saving strategies early in planning, we are well -placed to support change throughout our supply chain. Currently, we report our carbon emissions internally on a quarterly basis. Reports include a league table of emissions and efficiency levels across Eurovia’s business so that all parts of our group can identify where they stand and seek to improve accordingly. 44 Natural Gas (kwh) Electricity used (kwh) Petrol used (Litres) Diesel used (Litres) Gas Oil used (Litres) Reprocessed Gas Oil (Litres) LPG 0.9% 13.1% 0.5% 46.7% 31.5% 5.6% 1.7% Our Business 1 2 3 4 Our Environment Eurovia UK New PFI Buildings Eurovia Management Energy Saving In 2013, we constructed new offices in Hounslow and in Newport, Isle of Wight. Both design and build were carried out in accordance with sustainable building standards. A pre-Christmas Energy Awareness Week at our head office in Horsham saved 5% of our usual energy consumption. Sustainable buildings for sustainable contracts Little changes mean a lot The seven-day information campaign included staff training, email and poster messages, a ‘switch-off’ challenge and drop-in sessions with an energy assessor. Building layout considers low-energy, high specification lighting, airflow and conditioning, and both buildings are fitted with high efficiency solar panels to generate their own energy. At the Isle of Wight office, our visitor centre includes a live energy monitor displaying how much energy these panels have generated each day. In 2013, these panels generated 66606 Kwh in solar energy, equating to 30 CO2 Tonnes saved. 0-25 26-50 51-75 76-100 101-125 Both buildings received an A-rated Energy Performance Certificate 126-150 Over 150 CO2 45 Our Environment Our Business 1 2 3 4 Recycling water and reducing waste Eurovia UK Waste & Recycling Eurovia has invested significant sums and ingenuity in recycling gully waste. Such systems reduce landfill and save water: last year’s CR report showcased the successful reed bed system implemented by our joint venture, South West Highways. In 2012, the UK Government issued new rules for the disposal of gully waste to ensure that contaminants do not enter the food chain. This affected systems such as ours that process arisings to produce compost and clean - though non-potable water. Undeterred, we rethought aspects of our investment and adapted to meet the new requirements. Space constraints mean that a reed bed system is not an option for many of our depots. Nonetheless, we continue to invest in systems, (like the diagram shown opposite), that de-water and dry out waste, filter out useable materials and produce clean waste water to refill the gully tankers - massively reducing the amount of fresh drinking water used for gully cleansing. Our Environment Using water wisely Our Business 1 2 3 4 Eurovia UK Water Consumption Sustainable use of water is a key theme in Eurovia’s long-term environmental strategy and an increasing challenge for the highway maintenance industry. Indeed, throughout the South East of England, the management of water resources is a matter of public concern. We therefore entered into our PFI contract on the Isle of Wight with heightened awareness of water scarcity issues affecting the Island, which are likely to intensify over the life of the contract. To inform a water saving strategy, we are establishing our current water footprint by recording the quantity and source of all water we use, including the water content embodied in products we make or buy. Water saving systems established elsewhere in our business use harvested water for a range of purposes: vehicle washing, depot washdown and as brine for winter maintenance processes, for example. These will be established locally wherever feasible. Tanks ready to be su nk and installed at Island Roads. Meanwhile, the offices and depots of Island Roads use rainwater harvested from the roofs to feed WCs saving water with every flush. There is further work to be done to build on recycling and saving systems that Eurovia businesses already have in place. In particular, we see potential in wider uses for the water we currently reclaim from gully waste. We seek to further discussions with local water authorities about re-using such water within the cleaning regime. 48 Environmental Incidents 2013 Ground contamination Spillage/discharge of water Plants/Animals Fire Total 98% 7 6 2 1 16 of waste was diverted from landfill in 2013. We can see a sharp decrease in the Tonnes of CO2 emitted for every £1 million we turnover. This is an excellent demonstration of our business growing efficiently and being mindful with resources. Waste - The total waste we produced in 2013 increased to our highest level, but it is great to see that whilst this is the case as our business grows, we are still championing an excellent diversion from landfill culture. The amount we have landfilled has decreased, even with our growth. Recycled products - Our UK business increased in 2013 where we saw a hug rise in materials purchased by Eurovia UK. The quantity of recycled products purchased also rose, but not as much as we would have hoped. We will continue to support and guide our businesses to consider recycled products in the supply chain agreements. Water - Each year, since 2010, we have been reporting on our water consumption and we show a large increase due to better more accurate metering and recording. In 2012 we recorded our baseline, based on estimated figures, which we have exceeded in 2013. We have invested in harvesting techniques and recycling processes and expect this consumption to stabilise in 2014. Environmental Incidents - We have reduced the number of incidents that caused by Eurovia UK businesses, which is extremely positive. We will continue to work to improve incident prevention throughout our business in 2014 by using different training media and refreshing our guides. 49 Targets Our Business 2014 targets 1 2 3 4 Our key targets for CR and sustainability are published within our strategy documents for our UK business.
