Specification Guidelines
Description
Linear Festoon lighting is the commercial choice for accent,
cove, valance, and cabinet lighting. The Festoon Series can
produce up to 90 watts of high quality xenon light or 5W of
powerful LED light per foot. Sockets are wired in parallel and
the snap-in socket design facilitates easy, simple and safe relamping. Available in 2.5” , 3” , 4” , 6” or 12” spacing
The Festoon Series’ 12 gauge power strip is pliable and can
be field terminated, allowing maximum flexibility in designing
and installing systems. Optional mounting clips and aluminum
channel facilitate quick & permanent installation.
Choices of Xenon or LED lamps provide illumination where you
want it. Socket adapters are available which support MR-11
mini spots to provide focused illumination for cabinets and
feature areas; their swivel feature adds versatility to the lighting
system. Excellent for cove and under counter lighting, back
lighting and display cases, festoon lighting offers a variety of
lamps and spacing to fit your needs.

When considering Festoon Lighting it is important to
choose the correct on center spacing to satisfy the install
environment. To avoid any hotspots of light, the distance
between the lamps and the surface should not be less than
the spacing between the lamps.
Please specify the lamp spacing and lamp type you require
when ordering.

Description
Specification Guidelines
The revolutionary Cold Neon LED that solves all of the
problems of traditional glass neon. You will not be able to tell
it apart from glass neon until you touch it. LED Technology
allows for easy installation, vibrant colours, and great results.
Gone are the days of high voltage, heat, EM fields, and large
electrical bills.
Each Cold Neon run requires a power cord, an end cap, LED
driver and optional mounting.
Contact your local representative or BL Lighting for
information and assistance on designing Cold Neon systems.
When attaching connections it is imperative that they are
suitable for the environment. Silicone may be required to seal
connections and end caps from moisture.
Cold Neon LED is low voltage, long-lived with solid state long
life LED technology. It is field cuttable, durable enough for
outdoor use, and produces very limited heat. The PVC casing
is breakage free and water resistant! UV and impact resistant
acrylic diffuser.
Superior Grade UB LEDs provide consistent wavelength, high
stability and low lumen depreciation, leading to a truly long
functional life.

Ropelight Design
Description
Ropelight is a classic decorative lighting product and offers
a simple, economical and easy way to introduce light into
designs. The lighting is flexible and durable, making it ideal for
coves or accents, back lighting or halos. Rugged water-resistant
construction is suitable for indoor or outdoor applications for
perimeter lighting, linear outlines, architectural highlights and
sign type applications.
Construction consists of PVC tubing which encapsulates
subminiature lamps or LEDs spaced at regular intervals.
Incandescent lamps provide a soft and warm light with
consistent output and a superior life when compared to store
brands. LEDs offer better colors and two versions of white:
incandescent white and cool white. They draw less than 1W/ft,
are directional and have a life span in excess of 50,000hrs.

Line voltage Ropelight products cannot be field cut, safety
listings will be voided. Low voltage Ropelights can be cut on
site for added versatility of installation. For low-voltage LED, it
is recommended that a driver be used.

Handling
Ropelight is made with a durable PVC tube to protect the lamps
and connections. Excessive roughness, repetitive bending and
inclement installation temperatures will cause failures in the
product. All Ropelighting is tested before shipping.
Cutmarks
Ropelight can only be terminated on the cut marks. Because it
is Series/Parallel wired, making cuts anywhere else will render
that entire section non-functional. Cuts must be made between
the wire shunts inside the PVC. Please contact BL for more
specific details. Only Low Voltage Can be Field Terminated
Measuring
Since Ropelight must be cut at regular intervals which are not
always the same as the required lengths, often extra Ropelight
exists beyond the length needed. This can be blanked out with
wire loom or other material and hidden. If it is cut between cut
marks, the entire section will cease to function and may void
warranty and safety listings.

Ventilation and Overheating
Incandescent lamps and LEDs create heat; heat buildup will
shorten the life of the lamps and LEDs, may impact the clarity
of the PVC, and cause solder connections to fail. It is important
to allow for ventilation in all applications. Incandescent
Ropelights must be exposed on at least 3 sides and LED
Ropelight must be exposed on at least 2.
LED Driver
LED Ropelight requires DC Power at its stated voltage. Line
voltage LED Ropelight will require a 2-prong plug, a rectifier
(in the power cord) and the Ropelight. Low Voltage Ropelight
requires an LED Driver and the Ropelight. A DC Driver converts
120VAC to the required DC voltage and will help maintain
the life of the product by regulating the power supplied.
It is recommended that 120V LED Ropelight be on a surge
protector.
Mounting
Ropelight can be laid into place, secured with clips or secured
with channel. Channel is recommended to hold Ropelights in
straight lines.
Color Temperature
BL strives to maintain color consistency with all of its products;
however it is not always possible to be 100% accurate. Color
temperature variance is normal within a reasonable margin
and is especially pronounced with LED Ropelight. Cool White
LED Ropelight has a bluish tinge to it because of its high K
temperature. Owing to the color variance of warm white LED
lighting, it is our recommendation that customers request a
color sample to be sent and approved prior to shipping of any
orders.
Life Span
Ropelight, like all lighting products, rate their lives at the
average lamp life. For incandescent lamps, that is when 50%
of the lamps are expected to be operating still. LED life is
determined when the lamps are at 70% of their light output.
All Ropelight products are wired in series/parallel; when a lamp
fails, a section will no longer illuminate. Section length is the
same as cutting increments.

Mechanical
LED Wall Washers provide large area color coverage with low
voltage, safe, energy saving LEDs. The rugged housing installs
in a snap, with plug and play operation. Simply adjust the
angle position of the washer to highlight, graze surface or
provide brilliant illumination as required. Preprogrammed
RGB color changing, with optional DMX control allows for a
wide range of eye catching dramatic effects.
All LED Wall Washers and Floodlights are IP65 rated.
Aluminum housed with 4mm toughened glass protecting
various configurations of high power 1W LEDs. This solid
build allows them to operate outside in the elements allowing
for creative positioning of the fixtures. LED Wall Washers
and Floodlights should not be mounted in areas with poor
drainage. They are not submersible.

Globe Light - GLB
Globe Light is an excellent product for landscape, tree lighting
and indoor decorations. Typical installations include stringing
over alleys, docks, and walkways; between trees and posts for
landscaping; over patios; and outlining building verticals and
crowns.
Globe Light is parallel wired with 16AWG durable cabling.
40mm globes are constructed from shatter resistant
polycarbonate for maximum durability. 10,000 hr long life offer
minimal maintenance and bright light. 24V operation reduces
the risk of shock hazards and is safe and easy to work with. It is
not recommended to exceed 5A (120W) on any given circuit and
every circuit should be fuse protected to be considered Class 2.

• Self illumination for a border light application.

• Ambient light, the UV inhibiting accessories, and types of
illuminators.
Ambient Light
• As ambient light levels increase, so too must the intensity of
decorative lighting. In order to have an impact, light intensity
needs to be greater in multiples of the surrounding area.
• Special consideration is given to the use of colors as colored
light competes less on intensity and more on the difference of
wave length. White light will appear less intense in an area with
traditional 2500-4000K lighting than blue, red or green light of
comparable brightness.

Monochrome Color or Color Changing
• Not all illuminators are capable of color changing and not all
of them are synchronizable. If they need to be synchronized,
data cabling is necessary to connect the illuminators.
Which Colors?
• Different lamps are rich in different colors: Metal Halides are
rich in blue, green, amber, and white, but do not fare well with
reds. Halogens and LEDs are suitable for all colors.
• The surrounding decorations and colors will help determine
the most suitable colors.
Mounting Surface
• Dark colors absorb light, light colors reflect it. For cove,
reveal, and valance applications the cove should be painted
reflective white for the maximum effect.
• Securing the fiber to the surface will depend on the
application and can be done with the use of rigid tubes,
mounting channel, P-Clips, routered grooves and various other
methods.

Run Lengths
• Fiber becomes less intense the further it is away from
the light source. This works on a logarithmic scale and
is measured in dB/m. If designed well with strategically
positioned illuminators, the fiber will appear consistent along
its entire length.
• The ambient light, color of light, and purpose will help
determine the actual maximum distances. Maximum
distances on fiber cut sheets are estimates based on average
conditions.
Corners and Bends
• Fibers will lose light at a faster rate as the bends tighten.
Minimizing the bends will increase the successful run lengths.
• Maximum recommended bend radius is 8x the fiber
diameter.
General Maintenance
• Fibers need to be protected from UV using either a UV
snap track, Lexan™ tubing, or UV resistant resins for routered
installations.
• Fibers must be wiped clean periodically.
• Illuminators will need lamps replaced and to be cleaned
periodically from dust and other particle intrusions.
Illuminator placement
• Illuminators must be installed where they are clean, dry,
ventilated and accessible for maintenance.
• Placement is critical to achieve consistent intensity and can
be arranged in a number of ways.
• Dead ended fiber must have a reflective end cap.
End Light Applications
End Light Applications must take into account many of
the same issues as Side Light, but the concern is not for
consistency along the lengths of fibers; rather it is a matter
consistency between individual end points. Consistency is a
function of distance from the illuminator and arrangement of
the fiber within the bundle head that fits into the illuminator.

allowing for radiant illumination along its length. It is resistant
to heat, vibration and elongation. The FEP outer coating is

Description
BLFO-EL Solid Core End Light Optical Fiber uses a special
chemical formulation and full curing process to increase the
transmissibility of the fiber. It is resistant to heat, vibration
and elongation. The PVC outer jacketing is resistant to fungi
and algae growth and most chemicals. Side illumination has
been eliminated for inconspicuous transmission to output
end point. BL End Light Optical Fiber is suitable for indoor and
outdoor applications specifically for end point illumination.
Jacketing does not improve light transmission, it blocks out
light emissions from view along the fiber’s length. Jacketing
is only required if the fiber is to be visible and not installed
inside a conduit or ceiling cavity.

Starfield Systems
Description
A starfield ceiling kit consists of a few basic components: fibers
and illuminators and in the case of a large ceiling, fiber drivers.
Illuminators produce the light, fibers deliver it, and fiber drivers
increase the efficiency of the system by delivering bulk light closer
to the ceiling and allowing the illuminator to be housed in a more
convenient location.
Planning a Starfield Ceiling
Accessibility
In order to install into the ceiling, access must be available
from above. This is usually gained from an attic or crawlspace.
Alternatively, the fibers can be installed into drywall sheets or
other materials while on the ground and then lifted and installed
into place.
Placement of Illuminators
Illuminators must be kept clean, dry, ventilated and accessible for
maintenance and re-lamping.
Distance between Illuminators and Ceiling
Microfiber bundles are costly and inefficient to run long distances.
It is best to keep the illuminators and the ceiling as close as
possible. If not possible, it may be useful to include a fiber driver
into the system, especially if lengths are greater than 15ft or 5m.
Mounting Fibers
Holes are drilled in the ceiling surface, fibers placed through and
secured with glue. Fibers are pulled through the holes with an
extra 2-3” length given. The extra is then cut off once the ceiling
has been painted.
Density and Dispersion
The fiber density in the ceiling depends on the height and color
of the ceiling, ambient light levels, and personal preference. The
higher the ceiling, the fewer points per sq/ft are required. A
higher density of points should be found in the center of the
room and decreasing towards the periphery to create a galaxy
effect. 1.5mm fibers can be separated from within the bundle and
arranged to form constellations according to star maps.

Illuminators
The light source for the fiber bundles. They consist
of a lamp, reflector, decorative wheel and a micro
fiber coupler. Illuminators must all be kept clean,
dry, ventilated and accessible. Lamps will need to be
replaced and periodic maintenance is necessary.
Micro Fiber & Bundles
Bundles are made up of 0.75mm, 1mm, and 1.5mm fibers in 70%, 20%,
10% ratios respectively. When installed into a ceiling they deliver light of
different intensities that simulate the natural variations in the night sky.
Bundles are factory assembled and attached into a coupling device to
attach to an illuminator or fiber driver. See the micro fiber section for
technical information.

Fiber Drivers
Solid core fiber carries the light from an illuminator to
the fiber driver where the micro fibers are coupled. The
solid core fiber carries the bulk of the distance to the
fiber driver which is to be positioned near the ceiling,
keeping materials and costs down. Fiber drivers allow
the illuminator to be placed in a more convenient
location and still have the shortest lengths of micro
fiber.
Effect Wheels
Wheel options are available for all illuminators and
fiber drivers. Twinkle wheels create a shimmering
effect, color wheels change the color of entire panels,
and color twinkle wheels randomly change the color of
random fibers.

Metal Halide R–Type - BLFO-R150II-DMX. A high output
150W metal halide illuminator is the standard for fiber optic
illumination. Long life Osram HQI-R 150W discharge light bulb
(>6000 hr.), this light unit comes standard with a stepped

Description
Fiber Optic Driver
The BL Fiber Driver - BLFO-FD is a Solid-Core to Stranded
transitional device. It allows for a multitude of stranded points
to be lit by a single solid core fiber. By using solid core fiber
to travel the majority of the distance to the output point,
illuminators can be kept in convenient locations, stranded
fiber quantities can be limited, and overall distances can be
increased. The fiber driver is available with a twinkle wheel,
colored twinkle wheel, or static color.

The BL SRC100-Washer is a self-explanatory preprogrammed DMX Controller. The controller
is suitable for outdoor installations and is equipped with 2 output ports. The programs offer a
variety of fading, chasing, static and flashing features. Works with LED Wall Washers & LED Cove
Washers.
LED Dimming Module - PWM-12V-1CH / PWM-24V-1CH
The LED dimming module uses pulse width modulation (PWM), which is an efficient way of
providing electrical power between fully on and fully off. The quick switching rate cycles faster
than what would affect the device (LEDs) that use the power. Use in conjunction with any
market 0 – 10V dimming switch. The dimming module can control lines up to 100W/4.2A @ 24V
or 50W/3.3A @ 12V. Can be used to dim most LED products.

LED Drivers & Transformers Vital Information
In many cases it may be necessary to have more than one run
of lighting come from a single transformer or driver. In this case,
each run must not exceed the maximum current individually
and the combined draw or wattage must not exceed the
capacity of the transformer or driver.
1. Determine the Voltage
Verify the voltage, 120V, 24V, 12V. Determine if it is AC or DC
and if it requires regulated power or not. This can be done
by checking the catalogue, the product itself or contacting BL
customer service. DC power can be made by either using the
LED Driver or a 24V transformer with an inline rectifier. BL
recommends that all LED products use the LED Drivers for their
regulated output.

5. Evaluate Distance for Voltage Drop
Calculate the total distance from the load to the transformer;
check the chart for the maximum distance before voltage
drops 5%. The table below is for reference only; use the formal
formula found in electrical guidebooks to determine actual
drop. Measurements are in feet.
2. Calculate the Load (Wattage)
Verify the wattage of each lamp or luminaire, multiply it by the
total number of lamps or luminaires. For strip lighting, multiply
the number of lamps per foot by the total footage.
3. Check the Ampacity (Current)
Divide the total wattage by the voltage to calculate the current.
Each product will have a maximum current and it is critical not
to exceed it.
