UCCS Parents and Families
2015-2016 Academic Calendar
Welcome to the
Mountain Lion Family
Dear UCCS Parents and Families,
Welcome to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. I am so excited that you and your student have
decided to become a part of the Mountain Lion family. As a part of our family, I hope all of you will find
UCCS to be a place of support, learning, and growth.
At UCCS, our goal is to partner with parents and families to support our students both as scholars and as
individuals. We want students involved in and outside of the classroom. As a parent or family member of a
UCCS student, you play an important role in supporting your student to grow. When you are asked for
advice about challenging decisions or situations, we will be happy to act as a resource. Please feel free to
contact my office at any time.
College is about dreams and the future. We look forward to being a part of helping your student reach his
or her dreams and goals. We encourage your student to take advantage of a culture rich in academics,
wonderful learning experiences, and opportunities to get involved in our community.
Again, welcome to UCCS. We are proud to call you and your student Mountain Lions.
Cordially,
Pam Shockley-Zalabak
Chancellor
FERPA
Ten Thoughts for
Parents and Families
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
is a federal law created to protect the privacy of student
educational records. It applies to schools receiving funds
through the U.S. Department of Education.
1. Find ways to promote independent thinking – how
can you help your student take responsibility for his/her
own choices and decisions?
Family Educational Rights
and Privacy Act
Once a student enters college or turns 18, parental rights
under FERPA transfer to the student. Information from
student records is not shared unless the student gives
written permission, or it is a special case, such as a health
or safety emergency. Source: Family Policy Compliance
Office of the U.S. Department of Education.
Students can waive FERPA rights and give specific
individuals (i.e. parents, guardians, spouses, etc.) access
to their academic and financial records by filling out
a waiver form in their myUCCS portal. For questions
about FERPA rights, contact the Admissions and Records
Office at 719-255-3361.
Items the university cannot discuss without a student’s
FERPA waiver on file include, but are not limited to:
• Student billing, financial aid, and scholarships
• Academic information (grades, transcripts, advising)
• Housing issues (roommate issues, room changes, etc.)
• Conduct issues
2. Remember that your student still needs you, just in
different ways.
3. Students need to be able to make mistakes so they
can learn from them.
4. Set boundaries, but still keep in touch. How often
should you and your student talk, text, video chat, or
communicate with each other?
5. Find ways to get comfortable with the
uncomfortable. There is a good chance your student
will surprise you with something this year. How are you
going to respond to it?
6. Encourage your student to find at least three
places to get connected, not just one. For example, if
your student is wanting to get involved in clubs, have
him/her check out three clubs, instead of just one.
7. Have patience. Both you and your student will
want UCCS to feel like a “home away from home.”
Remember, it will take time. This means that your
student may call you more frequently in the beginning
and then it will start to taper off later on in the semester
when your student is more comfortable with UCCS
and has made new friends.
8. Get people in your corner. Build relationships with
support services at UCCS to help you support your
student. The Office of Parent and Family Programs is a
great place to start building relationships with UCCS.
9. Remember that your student will carry forward
some of your values and will discover a few new
values as he/she grows and develops. While your
student may try new things, there is a set of core values
that drive many of his/her decisions. As students start
to discover who they are as individuals, they will start
to develop a set of values that are important to their
identity.
10. Frequently share with your students that you
trust them to make good choices and that the
majority of UCCS students are also making good
choices. The power of positive messages is much
stronger than fear or distrust.

June Checklist
 What are some things you plan to
do to prepare for college?
 Start making connections.
UCCS has several different Facebook pages and groups
to help you and your student get connected on campus.
We even have a Facebook page just for UCCS Parents
and Families: facebook.com/UCCSFamily.
 What are some of the things
you think you should talk to your
roommate about?
 Encourage
your student to be
informed.
Once your student has attended orientation, it is
important that he/she keeps informed by checking his/
her UCCS email. UCCS email serves as the primary
means of communication for UCCS. Most UCCS
offices only email students through their UCCS email
once they have attended an orientation. Your student
should check his/her UCCS email at least once a week.
 Have
your student sign up for UCCS
Alerts emergency text notification
system.
Students must use their MyUCCSPortal to register their
mobile phone number for emergency text alerts and
may register additional numbers at rave.uccs.edu.

they should plan accordingly. If they have not done so
already, be sure to have them invest in a planner.
 Grade check.
Ask your student about his/her grades for each class. If
your student does not know, urge your student to meet
with professors to find out. If your student is struggling
academically, he/she should contact the Office of First
Year Experience, 719-255-3570, to meet with a success

December Checklist
 How are you feeling about your
finals? Stressed? Relaxed?
 Attention Housing Students.
Students living in a first-year designated housing
area will need to vacate their rooms for winter break
within 24 hours of their last final or by noon Saturday,
December 19, 2015. Students can leave their belongings
but they will not have access to their rooms until
Sunday, January 17, 2016.
 What are your plans for the
upcoming winter break?
 Start thinking about finals.
Finals are approaching very quickly. Students should
make a study plan that includes the assignments,
projects, and exams that are due for the remainder of
the semester.
 On-campus jobs.
December is a great time for students to log in to SEAN’s
Place, seans.uccs.edu, to apply for spring jobs at UCCS.
 Scholarships.
Winter break is a good time for students to start
researching scholarships. UCCS scholarships are
available online beginning December 1. March 1 is

options with your student for the next academic year. If
your student plans on living on-campus, make sure your
student keeps his/her eyes open for housing renewal and
sign-up dates. Housing renewal usually begins in
early March.
 Submit the FAFSA.
To meet the priority date for financial aid, your
student’s FAFSA, www.fafsa.gov, should be submitted
no later than March 1.
 Pay attention to your student.
If your student seems anxious or depressed, encourage
him/her to schedule an appointment with a counselor
at the University Counseling Center, 719-255-3265.

from this past year of college?
 Do you have a favorite professor
or staff member at UCCS that you

May Checklist
 Apply for a summer job or internship.
If your student is planning to stay in Colorado Springs
for the summer, May is a great time to look for
on-campus jobs. Many of our students go home or
graduate in May, which tends to open up opportunities
for on-campus employment. To search for on-campus
jobs visit SEAN’s Place, seans.uccs.edu.
 Resumé reviews.
Encourage your student to update or create a resumé.
Have your student make an appointment at the UCCS
Career Center, 719-255-3340, or the Writing Center,
719-255-4336, to have a resumé critiqued.
 Attention Housing Students.
Housing students will need to vacate and check out of
their rooms with their resident assistant within 24 hours
of their last final or by noon Saturday, May 14, 2016.

Welcome to UCCS! As a parent or family member
of a UCCS student, you are a part of our Mountain
Lion family. The Office of Parent and Family Programs
is here to help you become more familiar with the
UCCS campus and community and to answer any
questions that you may have. We know that parent
and family involvement is important to student success
and welcome opportunities to partner with you. We
hope you and your student will have a rewarding
and successful academic year. We want to ensure that
you know how to locate the wide variety of resources
available to you and your student. Here are just a few
of the ways that our office partners with parents:
A listening ear…
Whether you have a question, a concern, or a story
to share, the Office of Parent and Family Programs
is here to listen and to help provide support to you
and your student. We are happy to serve as your
connection to university resources. Never hesitate to
call, 719-255-7551, or send an email, family@uccs.edu.
A community builder…
This year, we are working hard to provide more
opportunities for parents and families to visit our
campus. You are more than welcome to attend most
UCCS events with your student, but we are going to
be highlighting several events each semester that we feel
may be of particular interest to parents and families,
including Parent and Family Weekend.
A communication hub…
Our goal is to help communicate with you about
events, updates, and happenings at UCCS. Additionally,
we will work to inform you of many of the common
transitional issues your student may experience as a
new college student. To keep up with what’s going
on at UCCS every month, sign up for our monthly
e-newsletter during orientation or by sending your
name and email address to, family@uccs.edu. For
additional updates and happenings, please “like” us on
Facebook: www.facebook.com/UCCSFamily.
Please note: As with any university entity, the Office of
Parent and Family Programs may not be able to share
specific information regarding your student under the
Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). For
more information on FERPA, see the inside cover.
