This unit standard is for people who handle and store
hazardous substances in the workplace. These people are not
Hazardous Substances Approved Handlers.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate
knowledge of handling and storage of hazardous substances,
and handle and store hazardous substances in the workplace.

Legislative requirements in this unit standard include – Health and Safety in
Employment Act 1992, Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996.

Definitions
Organisational requirements – instructions to candidates on policies and procedures
which are documented in memo or manual format. These requirements include but
are not limited to – site-specific requirements and any quality management
requirements.
Hazardous substance – any substance that has one or more of the following
properties (explosive, flammable, ability to oxidize, corrosiveness, toxicity, ecotoxicity) when above specified levels. A hazardous substance can have more than
one hazardous property such as petrol which is flammable and toxic.

Safe handling practices may include but are not limited to – precautions, clothing,
equipment, containers, packaging, labelling, filling containers, use of approved
transport, combinations of goods and substances, disposal, container cleaning.

Range

with organisational and legislative requirements.

Hazardous substances in storage are monitored and maintained in accordance
with organisational and legislative requirements.

signage, combinations, quantity, temperature, light, humidity,
security, container, packaging, proximity to other goods, stock
rotation.

Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.

to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The
