Instructions for Sending Letters of Recommendation (LOR) All medical schools that are members of AMCAS require that letters of recommendation are sent to them by AMCAS, not directly to the school from the applicant. Students have the option to have authors send letters directly to AMCAS individually or to use the Gateway Student Success Center (GSSC) letter service. There are several mediums in which a letter writer/author can send your letter to AMCAS. AMCAS will receive letters from users of VirtualEvals, Interfolio, and via the mail. In addition, letter writers/authors who currently mail letters can opt to upload letters directly to AMCAS through the AMCAS Letter Writer Application (more info at www.aamc.org). GSSC letter service collects letters and then sends them on to AMCAS. Students who choose to use the GSSC letter service instruct the authors to send their letters directly to our office and we will file all letters until the student is ready to apply. Letters will be kept on file in case applicants reapply, apply post-graduation. If you choose to use NAU’s Letter Service via VirtualEvals, the Gateway Student Success Center (GSSC) will collect and house your letters to be sent to AMCAS . Using VirtualEvals, GSSC will upload ONLY ONE LETTER PACKET electronically. You will need to instruct letter writers/authors to send letters to GSSC, prior to your submission date. Once your letter has been submitted to AMCAS or medical schools it cannot be changed or withdrawn, submissions are final. Instructions will be listed on the back of this page. The main advantage of using our Letter Distribution Service is that should you apply to any additional programs that are not MD (DO, podiatry, veterinary, pharmacy, physician’s assistant, dental etc.) or programs that do not participate in AMCAS we retain your letters and can forward them for you by mail (i.e.USPS). Special Information for MD Applicants: Please note you have three ways to classify your letters of recommendation: (1) Individual Letter, (2) Part of a Letter Packet, and/or (3) Committee Letter. Important Note: If you are using a Committee Evaluation Letter in addition to other letters of evaluation/recommendations please select the “Committee Letter” option. If you choose to have the author send your letter directly to AMCAS, give the author a copy of the AMCAS Letter Request Form.
