Drama cover lessons / one-offs Suitable for all year groups Lesson 1: Written lesson In groups of four, they are to write a script for a sketch entitled ‘The Accident’ which will have four short scenes. 1. Discuss / brainstorm storyline, in order to clarify setting, characters, events, conclusion. 2. Each pupil should choose a scene to focus on. Write a short paragraph saying what happens in their scene. 3. Now script the scene, including stage directions. Lesson 2: Practical lesson Divide class into groups of five. Each pupil in each group has a number (1 – 5). Give them the title for their drama, ‘Holiday from Hell!’ They are to devise an interesting scene but are only allowed to speak as many words at a time as the number they were allocated. So the pupil who is 2 can only speak two words at a time. Once someone has spoken, another group member must speak before they speak again. Twenty minutes to rehearse then perform to group. Audience to check that no cheating happens! Lesson 3: Practical lesson: In groups of five, pupils are to devise a scene with one of the following titles: y y y ‘The secret door’ ‘The broken mirror’ ‘The unexpected guest’. They should try to make their scenes as scary as possible. After 15 minutes, stop rehearsing and watch two groups perform. Discuss any scary elements. Now go back into original groups and rehearse the same scene but this time, try to add humour. After 20 minutes, stop and perform to the group. They are to make it as colourful and informative as possible. This can be done in an IT room if possible. The best three posters will be laminated and displayed. Lesson 5: Practical lesson In groups of five, pupils should devise a scene entitled ‘The worst birthday present ever.’ They should try to make their scene as entertaining as possible. Rehearse for 20 minutes, then perform work to the rest of the group. Class to vote on which present was the worst. Lesson 6: Written lesson In pairs, write a short story called ‘The Haunted School’. It should be two sides of A4 and should contain four characters. Try to make the ending as surprising as possible. Read out story to the rest of the group and stop before the end. See if anyone can guess the end of the story. If they can, you need to change it! Next lesson, rehearse and perform your story. Lesson 7: Practical lesson In groups of four, devise one of the following scenes: • • • the world’s worst dentist the world’s worst teacher the world’s worst children’s entertainer.
