Mizzou Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Award, 2009 USDA Regional Teaching Award, 2010 RESEARCH ACTIVITIES Research Program: An improved understanding of the hormonal interrelationships among the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and ovary is needed in efforts to increase reproductive efficiency of livestock. More specifically, the development of improved and economical methods of controlling livestock reproduction depends upon an increased understanding of the physiological mechanisms regulating ovarian function. In beef and dairy cows, the maturation of an ovarian follicle culminating in ovulation and formation of a normal corpus luteum is a process that is poorly understood. Problems such as delayed puberty, cystic ovaries, and prolonged postpartum intervals have been attributed to follicular development that is not accompanied by ovulation. The economic impact of prolonged postpartum intervals has been documented. Estimates by the USDA indicate that a 6 day decrease in postpartum interval length would reduce cow maintenance costs by $112 million and the increased calf weaning weights would be worth $96 million. 3 Dr. Smith's research program has focused on mechanisms associated with follicular development culminating in the release of a fertilizable germ cell and formation of a corpus luteum. The goal of his research studies is to better understand extraovarian and intraovarian mechanisms regulating follicular maturation and corpus luteum function. A deeper understanding of the mechanisms should result in the development of improved methods of controlling reproductive events (e.g., decreasing postpartum interval length and improving the synchronization of ovulation).
