Purpose: This workshop will provide hands on education for providing physical and emotional
support to birthing women and their families. Attending one two-day workshop will be one step
towards ICEA Birth Doula Certification. This course will allow the participant to practice and
demonstrate labor–enhancing comfort measures, understand the physical and emotional
progression of labor, identify the impact that doulas have on the lives of families served and
evaluate and identify opportunities for starting a rewarding doula business.
Intended Audience: Individuals interested in pursuing a career as a doula and/or nurses and
health care professionals working in the Mother Baby Unit.
Accreditation: Nurses will be awarded 1.92 CEU Iowa Board of Nursing Approved Provider #17.
Full attendance is required. No partial credit will be given.

Objectives: At the completion of the course the participant will be able to:
1. Identify the benefits of doula care
2. Describe the scope of practice for doula care
3. Define important information to points to assess when evaluating the needs of the client
4. Demonstrate the ability to develop a birth plan that would clearly communicate the
needs of the client
5. Describe basic emotional and developmental issues associated with pregnancy and birth.
6. Discuss various philosophies of care and how they affect labor and birth
7. List four main hormones that influence labor and their action.
8. List possible, pre-labor and positive signs of labor
9. Describe how the progress of labor is assessed
10. Describe emotional factors that influence the process of labor and birth
11. Describe the stages of labor-both the physical process and the most common emotional
responses to each stage

List appropriate tasks foe the doula during each stage of labor
List the sources of pain during labor
Compare and contrast pain and suffering
List comfort measures and describe their appropriate use
List labor coping skills and describe their appropriate use
Describe non-pharmacologic forms of pain relief (including risks, benefits and alternative) and the doula’s role
when these are used
Describe pharmacologic forms of pain relief (including risks, benefits and alternatives) and the doula’s role
when these are used.
Describe the benefits of skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth
Demonstrate strategies that facilitate bonding in the immediate postpartum period
Discuss the benefits of each of the ten steps of Baby Friendly hospital Initiative
Describe practices that support and enhance breastfeeding initiation
List at least five short-and-long term benefits of breastfeeding
Distinguish between postpartum blues and postpartum depression
Describe other postpartum mood disorders
List common variations experienced by women in labor and describe appropriate support techniques the
doula can use
Describe the doula’s role during a cesarean section
List effective strategies for supporting women who choose VBAC
Describe the doula’s role when working with survivors of abuse
Discuss the importance of contracts used with doula services
Define the basics of starting a doula business
