IBM HTTP Server Powered by Apache on z/OS V2.2
August 19, 2015
Background on the IBM HTTP Server
As you may know, a new base element of the IBM HTTP Server Powered by Apache (IHSA)
has been introduced in z/OS V2.2 This base element replaces the IBM HTTP Server Powered
by Domino, which had not changed since OS/390 R10. The level of IHSA included in z/OS V2.2
is based on Apache HTTP Server 2.4 (http://httpd.apache.org/). This level is also known as
“level 9.0” by IBM. IHSA level 9.0 is exclusive to z/OS V2.2 at this writing, and has not been
included in any of IBM product, such as IBM WebSphere Application Server or IBM Ported
Tools.
The current level of IHSA included in the IBM WebSphere Application Server V8.5 (5655-W65)
and IBM Ported Tools V1.3 (5655-M23) products is level 8.5.5, which corresponds to a level
based on Apache HTTP Server 2.2. It is anticipated that you have to perform a small number
of migration actions between IHSA 8.5.5 and 9.0 (Apache level 2.2 and 2.4), as described at
this website http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/httpserv/manual24/upgrading.html.
As part of the strongly recommended migration path to z/OS V2.2, if you are currently using the
IBM HTTP Server Powered by Domino (provided in z/OS V2.1 and z/OS V1.13) you should be
actively moving to the IHSA that is provided in the IBM Ported Tools V1.3 (5655-M23) product.
This will allow you to move your applications to IHSA 8.5.5 prior to migrating to z/OS V2.2. Do
note that pre-z/OS V2.2 z/OS Infoprint Server Infoprint Central function cannot run on IHSA, and
you must keep your HTTP Server Powered by Domino on z/OS V2.1 or z/OS V1.13 for that
function until z/OS V2.2 is installed. You can run both the HTTP Server Powered by Domino –
and- the IHSA 8.5.5 on z/OS V2.1 or z/OS V1.13 concurrently. By moving from the HTTP
Server Powered by Domino to IHSA 8.5.5 prior to your z/OS V2.2 installation you can perform
much of the migration work ahead of time. For information about the migration from Domino to
Apache 8.5.5, refer to IBM Redbook “IBM HTTP Server on z/OS: Migrating from Dominopowered to Apache-powered”, REDP-4987
(http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/redp4987.html?Open).
z/OS V2.2 Migration Accommodation for IHSA
Many customers have followed the recommended migration path, and have moved from HTTP
Server Powered by Domino to the IBM Ported Tools V1.3 IHSA feature, and still have wanted
more time to complete their migration to IHSA 9.0 when installing z/OS V2.2. In order to
accommodate those users, IBM will allow you to use your existing IBM Ported Tools V1.3 IHSA
feature (8.5.5) concurrently with z/OS V2.2 IHSA (9.0) for a period of time until z/OS V2.1 is End
of Service (planned to be September 2018).

The IBM Ported Tools V1.3 IHSA 8.5.5 level is not orderable with z/OS V2.2, nor will it install
into the same SMP/E zones because it has been SMP/E SUPerceded and DELeted by z/OS
V2.2 For that reason, if you wish to use both IHSA 8.5.5 and IHSA 9.0 on z/OS V2.2, you must
have obtained and installed the IBM Ported Tools V1.3 IHSA 8.5.5 level separately from z/OS
V2.2 If you wish, you can add the existing IBM Ported Tools V1.3 IHSA 8.5.5 SMP/E zones into
your z/OS V2.2 GLOBAL zone using SMP/E commands, such as:
SET BDY(GLOBAL).
/* Your z/OS V2.2 GLOBAL zone. */
UCLIN.
ADD GLOBALZONE ZONEINDEX (
(TGTIHS,PORTED.TOOLS.CSI,TARGET)
(DLBIHS,PORTED.TOOLS.CSI,DLIB) ).
ENDUCL.
You may want to run an SMP/E REPORT CROSSZONE command to see if any required PTFs
between z/OS V2.2 and the newly added zones are identified as necessary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I run my HTTP Server Powered by Domino on z/OS V2.2?
A: The HTTP Server Powered by Domino has been removed in z/OS V2.2, and replaced with
the IBM HTTP Server Powered by Apache. Because the HTTP Server Powered by Domino is
not part of the operating system any longer, it is not supported to run on z/OS V2.2. Only IHSA
8.5.5 (until the planned z/OS V2.1 End of Service of September 2018), and IHSA 9.0 (which is
included in z/OS V2.2) are supported to run on z/OS V2.2.
Q: Can I continue to run the IHSA that is included in the IBM WebSphere Application
Server on z/OS V2.2, until that WAS level is out of service?
A: Absolutely. This migration accommodation provided for IHSA 8.5.5 and IHSA 9.0 applies
only to the IBM Ported Tools V1.3 product. You can continue to use the HTTP Server provided
in other IBM products for those IBM products (including IBM WebSphere Application Server), for
as long as those program products are in service. This z/OS V2.2 migration accommodation
does not affect those program products that supply their own HTTP Server.
Q: Why can’t I order the IBM Ported Tools V1.3 HTTP Server (5655-M23) with z/OS V2.2?
A: You cannot order this specific program product with z/OS V2.2 as z/OS V2.2 includes a
higher level of the IHSA. The z/OS V2.2 migration accommodation allows those that have
already begun their Domino to Apache 8.5.5 migration to stabilize on Apache 8.5.5 prior to z/OS

V2.2, and then continue to move to Apache 9.0 on z/OS V2.2 during a specific timeframe. For
that reason, the existing level of IBM Ported Tools V1.3 is already available for use with z/OS
V2.2 from prior z/OS levels, and does not need to be re-acquired.
Q: Will future z/OS releases allow two levels of IHSA to be run concurrently?
A: It is difficult to say how Apache levels might affect migrations to future z/OS releases. The
Apache HTTP Server Project (http://httpd.apache.org/) sets the direction of the Apache HTTP
Server. It is intended in the future that you include IHSA migration actions into your migration
plans, just as you would any other z/OS base element such as JES2, DFSMS, or z/OS UNIX.
As of z/OS V2.1, it may be worth noting that all z/OS element levels must be at the same level
(with the z/OS migration accommodation for IHSA not included). In other words, as of z/OS
V2.1, there was no “mix and matching” of z/OS elements on a single z/OS system. For
instance, you cannot run z/OS V2.1 JES2 on a z/OS V2.2 system in the same LPAR. You can
coexist different levels of z/OS between systems, however, on a single system you must be
running the same level of the z/OS elements (again, this IHSA accommodation is not included in
that statement).
Q: How do I know if I’m using the IBM HTTP Server Powered by Domino?
A: Use the migration health check that is provided from this web site http://www03.ibm.com/systems/z/os/zos/installation/HTTP_Health_Checker.html . Follow the directions
on this site to add the IBM Health Checker for z/OS check to your system.
Q: What is the suggested migration plan, if I’m using the HTTP Server Powered by
Domino today?
A: Here is an overview of the steps to follow:
1. While on z/OS V1.13 or z/OS V2.1:
a. Install IBM Ported Tools V1.3 HTTP Server (level 8.5.5, Apache level 2.2).
b. Migrate from IBM HTTP Server powered by Domino to the HTTP Server 8.5.5.
•
Use Redbook: IBM HTTP Server on z/OS: Migrating from Dominopowered to Apache-powered (REDP-4987)
•
Use z/OS UNIX Tools and Toys ihsCMT (http://www03.ibm.com/systems/z/os/zos/features/unix/bpxa1ty2.html). This tool
generates an approximation of an equivalent httpd configuration file for
IHSA.

•
You can run the Domino and Apache servers side by side on z/OS V1.13
or V2.1. z/OS Infoprint Server still needs the Domino server prior to z/OS
V2.2.
2. When installing z/OS V2.2:
a. Migrate to IBM HTTP Server 9.0 (in the z/OS V2.2 base, Apache level 2.4).
•
Use “Upgrading to 2.4 from 2.2”
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/httpserv/manual24/upgrading.html .
•
Refer to http://www01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSEQTJ_8.5.5/com.ibm.webspher
e.ihs.doc/ihs/cihs_upgrading2.html for the general process on how to
move from 8.5.5 to 9.0.
b. Configure z/OS Infoprint Server (Infoprint Central), PKI, and Library Server to
use the new z/OS V2.2 HTTP Server.
c. Take advantage of the migration accommodation described in this paper
for “dual” IHSA (8.5.5 and 9.0), if necessary.
•
If you wish to run z/OS Inforprint Server Infoprint Central) on IHSA 8.5.5,
you will need APAR OA48564, which has a target availability date for the
PTF of September 25, 2015.
