GREAT RIVER REGIONAL LIBRARY EVENTS
All events at the Long Prairie are free and open to the public.
Some events have limited space and registration is required. To

• Preschool Story Time
Join us as we use our imagination with stories, flannel board
stories, songs and crafts to build kindergarten readiness. For
ages 3 to 6. Limit 10. We ask that an adult be present to assist
their child(ren) with craft projects.

• Summer Reading Program, Read for the Win!
Monday, June 13-Saturday, August 13. Sign up for the Summer
Reading Program! The more you read, the more chances you
have to win a prize! We’ll have lots of fun activities with LOTS
more chances to win prizes! For ages 0-high school.
• Family Comedy Magic Show: A Summer Reading
Celebration with Nathan Stockwell
Come celebrate summer reading with this great family comedy
magic show with magician Nathan Stockwell! Warning: this
performance may knock your socks off! All ages welcome.

• Zentangle Workshop with Penny Leuthard
Zentangles have taken the art world by storm. Zentangles are
easy to learn, relaxing and a fun way to create beautiful black
and white art by drawing structured patterns on 3 ½ inch
square paper tile. The best part is that anyone can learn to do
them! For ages 8 and up. Limit 15. Registration is required.

• Bruce the Bug Guy
Bruce Giebink, aka The Bug Guy, will be back at the library
with lots of wiggly, creepy crawlers. There will be bugs galore!
All ages welcome.

• Dave Cofell and Adam Hammer in Concert
Dave and Adam, voted “Best Original Musicians of Central
MN” four years in a row, will be performing at the Long Prairie
Concert Series. The event is held outside on the Christie House
lawn, 15 1st St S. Remember to bring a chair! In the event of
rain, the concert will be held at the high school. For all ages.

• Mixed Media Art—for Adults!
In honor of World Water Monitoring Day, come explore water
as an inspiration for creating art. We’ll use mixed media and
found objects to transform a rain gauge into a piece of art. For
adults. Limit 10. Registration is required.

Who’s Visiting the Library?
Stop by and see who’s visiting the library this month. Is it Harriet
Hedgehog? Or Olivia Owl? There’s always lots of fun books,
a fuzzy puppet to play with, and a chance to win a prize! For
toddler through school age. During library open hours.
SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL
This camp is a great way for music loving kids to learn, laugh
and sing together in a vigorous, fast paced and enjoyable,
high quality experience. Grades 1-7.

Free picnic meal will follow the concert for family and friends.
Osakis High School Choir Room
Send $30 registration fee and t-shirt size to Greater MN
Children’s Choir, 17186 Co. Rd. 10, Osakis, MN 56360. Fee
includes Festival T-Shirt, music and daily snacks. Auditions for
the Greater Minnesota children’s Choir, starting Fall 2015 will
be held during the week. If unable to attend camp but want to

Make and Take Craft Table
There’s always something fun happening at the library. Visit
the make and take table every week to see what’s new! For all
ages. During library open hours.

Do you play an instrument? Join the Long Prairie-Chamber
Orchestra and play for our Summer concert: Celebrating
Childhood. This concert is the final concert of our celebratory

AMERICAN RED CROSS LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM
Please read the descriptions and register your child for the appropriate class.
PRESCHOOL: Must be 3 years of age. •Going under water
•Moving toward an object •Turning around •Developing respect for
water •Safe water conduct
LEVEL 1: Introduction to Water Skills. Purpose: Helps students feel
comfortable in the water. Level 1 Participants will learn to: •Enter and
exit water safely •Open eyes underwater, pick up submerged object
• Swim on front and back using arm and leg actions • Submerge
mouth, nose and eyes • Float on front and back •Follow basic water
safety rules •Exhale under water through mouth and nose •Explore
arm and hand movements •Use a life jacket
LEVEL 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills: Purpose: Gives students
success with fundamental skills. Level 2 participants learn to: •Enter
water by stepping or jumping from the side •Open eyes underwater,
pick up a submerged object •Roll over from front to back, back to
front • Swim on side •Exit water safely using ladder or side •Float on
front and back •Tread water using arm and leg motions •Move in the
water while wearing a life jacket •Submerge entire head •Perform
front and back glide •Swim on front and back using combined strokes
LEVEL 3: Stroke Development: Purpose: Builds on the skills
in Level 2 through additional guided practice. Level 3 participants
learn to: •Jump into deep water from the side •Bob with the head
fully submerged •Perform survival float • Butterfly-kick and body
motion • Use Check-Call-Care in an emergency •Dive from kneeling
or standing position • Use Rotary breathing in horizontal position
• Change from horizontal to vertical position on front and back
•Perform the HELP and Huddle positions •Submerge and retrieve an
object •Perform front and back glide •Perform front and back crawl
•Perform a reaching assist
LEVEL 4: Stroke Improvement: Purpose: Develops confidence in
the skills learned and improves other aquatic skills. Level 4 participants
learn to: •Perform shallow dive or dive from stride position •Perform
open turns on front and back using any stroke •Use safe diving rules
•Perform a throwing assist •Swim underwater •Tread water using
sculling arm motions and kick •Perform compact jump into water
from a height while wearing a life jacket •Care for conscious choking
victim •Perform feet-first surface dive •Perform the following: Front
and back crawl; swim on side using scissor-like kick; breaststroke;
butterfly; elementary backstroke
LEVEL 5: Stroke Refinement: Purpose: Provides further coordination
and refinement of strokes. Level 5 participants learn to: •Tread water
with two different kicks •Learn survival swimming •Perform rescue
breathing •Perform the following: standing dive; pike surface dive;
butterfly; shallow dive; glide two body lengths and begin any front
stroke; front flip turn; breaststroke; backstroke flip turn; elementary
backstroke; tuck surface dive; front and back crawl; sidestroke
LEVEL 6: Personal Water Safety, Lifeguard Readiness,
Fundamentals of Diving and Fitness Swimmer. In Level 6 participants
refine strokes so they are able to swim them with ease, efficiency,
power and smoothness over greater distances. Level 6 also includes
instruction on basic skills of Personal Water Safety, Lifeguard Readiness,
Fundamentals of diving and Fitness Swimming in order to prepare
participants for more advanced courses they may take after Learn-ToSwim, such as Water Safety Aide, Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard
Training. PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Level 5.
Parents may call the Community Ed office at 732-4615 if they are
unsure which class they need to register their child for.
