1 Introduction
This document provides the technical specifications for the Delphi 9200-150-C series Order Confirmation System
(OCS) and related components. This product is also referred to as a Customer Order Display (COD) or a Order
Confirmation Board (OCB). For clarity, the product will be referred to as OCS throughout.
1.1
Order Confirmation System
The Delphi OCS integrates advanced digital video electronics with state-of-the-art sunlight readable color liquid
crystal display (“LCD”) technology to improve the efficiency of fast food restaurant drive through operations. The
OCS is capable of showing text, high-resolution color graphics and video animation via its large 15” display.
Located outside near the drive thru menuboard order point, the OCS provides instant visual feedback of the
customer’s order in a clear and concise manner. It also provides an effective marketing tool by using high impact
color graphics and video to communicate product promotions, special offers and suggestive sell opportunities.

2 C-Series System Packages
2.1
Standard C-Series Serial Package (P-OCS-STD-CS15S)
The Standard C-Series Serial Package is comprised of a 9200-150-C 15” C-Series Display Module, Speaker Post
Mount, Intelligent Modem Switch, and serial data cabling. The 9200-150-C Series product is backward compatible
with the 9200-150-E series product line though provides many more advanced software features and benefits.
2.1.1 Intelligent Modem Switch (IMS-9000)
The IMS-9000 Intelligent Modem Switch acts as an intelligent data port switch between the Point of Sale (POS)
system, the Back Office PC, a telephone modem connection, and the OCS. Additionally, it provides advanced
integrated system diagnostic features to allow quick troubleshooting of all system cabling, POS and OCS
communication problems. Comprehensive LED indicators provide instant status of all communications. The status
of the OCS may be tested at any time by pushing the OCS TEST button. This instructs the OCS to perform a selftest and report back any problems.
The default connection at power up is between the POS and OCS. Upon an authenticated request from the Back
Office PC or incoming telephone call, the IMS-9000 will automatically grant access of the requesting port to the
OCS. While the OCS is accessed, the programs and data can be updated or diagnostics performed on the system.
Upon a completed or disconnected PC session or dropped phone connection, the IMS-9000 automatically restores
connectivity from the POS to OCS. Refer to the IMS-9000 User Manual for additional details.

2.1.2 C-Series Serial Connection Topologies
The Order Confirmation System (OCS) interfaces with the IMS9000 or POS system via standard RS-232C or
RS422 serial communication standards. Default communications are set to RS-232C. Communication with the
POS system is typically at 9600 baud though some systems communicate at 19.2K baud. All system maintenance
functions are typically performed at a maximum speed of 57600 baud. The actual connection speed is limited by the
speed of the telephone connection.
2.1.2.1 Remote Dial-Up Configuration
The remote dial-up system configuration allows users to update the content on the OCS remotely using a standard
Windows based PC equipped with a dial up modem. This configuration requires the availability of either a switched
or dedicated telephone line at the store. Delphi provides a comprehensive and easy to use Configuration Tool
software utility that allows the user to easily create and maintain system dayparts, graphic slide shows, display
format, etc. See the Configuration Tool Software Utility section for more information.

2.1.2.2 Back Office PC Serial Connection
The back office PC serial connection allows the user to update the content on the OCS directly via a dedicated serial
port. Delphi’s Configuration Tool software can be hosted directly on the back office PC if desired, allowing local
control over content management and system configuration. Where local control is not desired or practical, Delphi
provides a Batch Download software utility that will update the OCS with content downloaded to the back office PC
via an existing dial-up, cable or DSL connection. This allows the OCS content to be managed remotely from a
single location without any intervention at the store level.

2.2
Standard C-Series Network Package (P-OCS-STD-CN15S)
The Standard C-Series Network Package is comprised of a 9200-150-C 15” C-Series Display Module, Speaker Post
Mount, and Cat5. The 9200-150-C Series product is fully network compatible and provides a high bandwidth and
reliable connection using standard Ethernet network protocols and low cost Cat5 cabling.

2.2.1 C-Series Network Connection Topologies
The CN series OCS can be interfaced to legacy serial POS systems or fully network enables POS systems using
standard CAT5 cabling.
2.2.1.1 Legacy POS Ethernet Solution
For legacy POS systems that only support a serial interface to the OCS, a Serial Server is used to convert the serial
output to Ethernet as shown below. This topology allows the use of the in-store network for both the transmission of
POS transaction data and content updates to the OCS.

2.2.1.2 Total Ethernet Solution
For POS systems that support a network interface to the OCS, the Total Ethernet Solution topology shown below is
recommended. This is the lowest cost and most reliable configuration, utilizing standard network hardware and
CAT5 cabling.

For legacy POS systems that only support a serial interface to the OCS, the IMS9000 can be used in conjunction
with a parallel network connection to the OCS. This allows serial connectivity from the POS to the OCS for all
transaction data while maintaining a network connection to the in-store network for content updates.

3 Software Features and Capabilities
3.1
Architecture Overview
The OCS application software program is designed to be easily customizable to specific customer requirements.
Extensive use of top-down object oriented design methodologies insures a high quality and reliable software product
that is both modular and maintainable. All software is written in high level programming languages such as C and
C++ using state of the art development tools. The OCS software architecture is comprised of several modular
components. Each component has a specific function and has a well-defined interface to the other system
components. The major system components are the System Executive, Graphical Order Interface, Image Display
Engine, Dynamic Order Database, POS Interface, and the System Maintenance Interface.
3.2
Modes of Operation
The OCS functions primarily in two modes of operation; Digital Merchandising Mode and Order Confirmation
Mode.
3.2.1 Digital Merchandising Mode
The Digital Merchandising mode is the default mode between customer orders. During this mode, the OCS will
display graphics, animation, full motion video, or any combination of the three. The type of content displayed
during this mode is defined by the Daypart Scheduler.
3.2.1.1 Daypart Scheduler
The Daypart Scheduler defines which graphics, animation, or video is displayed during any given time of day, day
of week or date. Accordingly, many dayparts can be created to schedule future promotions well in advance.
Dayparts are created and maintained using the Configuration Tool software utilities.

3.2.1.2 Supported File Formats
The following file formats are currently supported.
• Graphic Files: JPEG, BMP
3.2.2 Order Confirmation Mode
When a drive through order is initiated from the POS system, the OCS immediately transitions to the Order
Confirmation mode of operation. In this mode, several customer configurable windows are displayed on the OCS
screen to communicate the customer’s order, pricing, tax and total amounts and upsell graphics.

3.2.2.1 Customer Order Screen
The Customer Order Screen (COS) is responsible for displaying customer orders in a variety of customizable
formats. Proportional and scalable fonts are used to accommodate a variety of display sizes and resolution
requirements. Order items and modifiers can be assigned different font colors for added flexibility and clarity. The
maximum number of order items displayed on the screen is also configurable. If the customer’s order exceeds this
maximum, the order is automatically scrolled up one line as each additional item is ordered. The COS can also be
partitioned to allow the display of jpeg images (food shots) or suggestive sell text during the order process. All COS
customization is performed via the Configuration Tool software utility.
3.2.2.2 Menu Translation
The OCS supports a menu translation table that can be used to translate often-abbreviated POS menu item
descriptions to less cryptic (32 character) descriptions for the customer. The table is contained on the OCS and can
be generated using any standard spreadsheet program.
3.2.2.3 Scaling Font Capability
The scaling font feature (if enabled) automatically adjusts the font size to display the entire order on the OCS
display without scrolling. As the number of items fills the screen, the font is then reduced to accommodate more
items. This feature is not available with all POS systems due to limitations on the number of items sent to the OCS.

3.2.2.4 Intelligent Upsell Feature
The Intelligent Upsell feature dynamically changes the order screen upsell graphic based on the current contents of
the customer’s order. Using a simple set of customer configurable rules and a menu table, the OCS can identify
opportunities to promote complimentary items or upsell opportunities. For example, if the customer orders a main
item and a drink, the OCS will suggest a complementary side item or a larger drink via a color sidebar graphic on
the display.
3.2.2.5 Order Total Screen (selectable)
When this option is enabled, the Order Total Screen is displayed after an order is totaled at the order taker POS
terminal. The Total Screen displays the customer’s order total in large text and then returns to the Digital
Merchandising Mode. The text may be also overlaid on a total screen graphic image. The delay times before and
after the Total Screen are programmable.

3.3
Self Test Capabilities
The OCS performs an extensive self-test at startup where virtually all of the critical components of the system are
tested. The self-test results are displayed momentarily on the screen (as shown below) and are also written to a log
file for later remote retrieval.

The Ambient Temperature test measures the internal
air temperature of the OCS and verifies that it is within
acceptable limits.
The CPU Temperature test measures the
microprocessor temperature and verifies that it is within
acceptable limits.
The CPU Thermo. Temp Low test measures the low
temperature threshold programmed into the OCS
hardware. The low temperature threshold defines the
point when the External Fan is activated (if applicable).
The CPU Thermo. Temp High test measures the high
temperature threshold programmed into the OCS
hardware. The high temperature threshold defines the
point at which the system shuts down due to high
temperatures.
The Internal Fan Current test measures the internal fan
current and verifies that it is within acceptable limits.
The External Fan Current test (if applicable) measures
the external fan current and verifies that it is within
acceptable limits. This test only applies when external
fans are used where ventilation is limited by the
mounting configuration (i.e. menu board mounts).
The Heater Current test measures the internal heater
current and verifies that it is within acceptable limits.

The Backlight Current – Dimmed test measures the
current of the LCD backlight assembly when operating
in a dimmed mode. This test verifies proper operation
of the bulbs, power inverter and dimming circuits.
The Backlight Current – Max test measures the current
of the LCD backlight assembly when operating in
maximum brightness mode. This test verifies proper
operation of the bulbs, power inverter and dimming
circuits.
The Photocell Value test measures the external
ambient light sensor and compares with an acceptable
range of values.
The Battery Voltage test measures the internal battery
and verifies that it is within acceptable limits. The
battery is used to maintain system time and date
settings in the event of a loss of power.
The Board Revision test is informational only and
provides the current motherboard revision for
diagnostic purposes only.
The Watchdog test verifies correct functionality of the
hardware watchdog reset circuits. These circuits are
designed to automatically reset the hardware in the
event of a software malfunction.
The RS-485 Loopback test verifies correct functionality
of the RS-485 serial transmitters and receivers. Onboard relays loop back transmitter outputs and receiver
inputs to verify correct receipt of transmitted test
messages.

4 Hardware Features and Capabilities
4.1
Ruggedized Control Electronics
The OCS contains custom Delphi designed control electronics based on standard Pentium™ computer architectures
that have been enhanced to provide reliable operation over a wide range of environmental conditions. All
electronics are located on a single module to minimize internal cabling and increase reliability.
Features include:

4.1.1 Integrated Diagnostic Hardware
Integrated diagnostic hardware provides a high level of fault detection and isolation capability. These include
automatic serial loop-back circuitry, heater and fan test circuits, LCD backlight monitoring, and non-volatile fault
history log files. Diagnostic functions are run upon system reset and the results are available via the network
interface, through the serial connection or via the LCD diagnostic display screen.
4.1.2 Reliability
The OCS is designed with a Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) rate of 50,000 hours excluding the backlight
bulbs. This equates to an average continuous reliable operation of 5.7 years.
4.2
Environmentally Sealed Enclosure
The OCS enclosure is fully environmentally sealed and conductively cooled. A sealed enclosure protects the LCD
and control electronics from external contaminants such as dirt, dust, grease, chemicals and insects. Furthermore, no
external fans are utilized which eliminates noise than can interfere with audio systems and reduces maintenance
associated with filters. All heat from the LCD backlight and control electronics is conducted to the rear of the
enclosure and dissipated to the ambient environment through thermally efficient fins. Eliminating external fans
increases the product’s overall reliability, as fans are inherently the least reliable component.
4.3
System Protection and Monitoring Functions
All OCS displays are equipped with advanced protection and monitoring functions to ensure reliable operation in
harsh environmental conditions.
4.3.1 Lightning Protection
All data and power inputs are protected from lightning surges by sophisticated surge suppression technology. This
minimizes the chance of damage to the OCS or POS system due to power spikes or lightning.

4.3.2 Watchdog Reset Circuits
Integrated watchdog monitoring circuits will automatically restart the OCS in the event of a software or hardware
fault.
4.3.3 Thermal Management
Independent temperature control electronics continuously monitor the temperature of the microprocessor and the
LCD module. If the temperature falls below the safe operating threshold, internal heaters are activated to keep the
LCD and control electronics warm. This will insure consistent operation over the entire operating temperature
range. If the temperature exceeds safe operating limits, several steps are taken to reduce heat while maintaining
operation. If the processor temperature is exceeding safe operating limits, the temperature control electronics reduce
the processor operating frequency, thus reducing the dissipated heat. If the temperature of the LCD is exceeding
recommended operating conditions, the backlight brightness is reduced to minimize dissipated heat. If these
measures are not sufficient to maintain internal temperature within safe limits, the system is shut down to protect the
electronics and LCD module until the system has returned to a safe operating temperature.
4.4
Sunlight Readable Display Technology
All displays are the most advanced Active Matrix TFT (AM/TFT) color LCD technology available in the industry.
The color LCD’s utilized in Delphi’s products exhibit similar performance characteristics across all sizes. Delphi
adds custom hi-bright backlights and optical filters to maximize readability in direct sunlight. Additional filters are
incorporated into the protective front glass to protect the LCD color filters from the prolonged effects of exposure to
UV light and heat caused by infrared light. The following table outlines the specifications of the supported LCD
panels.

4.4.1 Continuous LCD Brightness Control
Optimal readability in all lighting conditions is achieved through active control of LCD brightness levels. Outside
ambient light levels are continuously monitored by the OCS controller electronics. The LCD brightness levels are
constantly adjusted to the optimum contrast for the given ambient light levels. At nighttime, the LCD brightness is
reduced to extend bulb life. The system may be configured to automatically shut off the backlight during periods of
in-operation, further extending bulb life and reducing energy consumption.
4.5
Vandalism Protection
The OCS is designed to be resistant to vandalism. Displays utilize tempered safety glass to protect the LCD surface.
The glass is impervious to most chemicals and can be cleaned with solvents to remove stickers, paint and other
materials. Optional field replaceable vandal shields are supplied to further protect the display from acts of
vandalism. If the vandal shield becomes scratched or damaged, it can be replaced in the field in less than five
minutes.
4.6
System Extensibility
The OCS has been designed to be extensible to allow future hardware upgrades with minimal cost impact.
4.6.1 Flexible Memory Configurations
The OCS memory can be easily tailored to the requirements of the application program. Both SDRAM and FLASH
memory are upgradeable.

4.6.2 PCI Expansion Port
A PCI expansion port is included to accommodate upgrades for custom applications. The mezzanine connector
expansion port may be used to add a variety of add-on daughter boards such as high bandwidth interfaces for video
distribution, digital signal processors (DSPs) for speech recognition, camera interfaces, etc.
4.6.3 10/100 BaseT Ethernet Port
A 10/100 BaseT Ethernet Port is included to provide increased bandwidth over standard serial communications
ports. This can be used to add standard networking support as well as provide real-time video distribution
capability. An optional RJ45 connector is available on the rear panel to provide a standard CAT-5 network cable
connection. Wireless network options are also available.
4.6.4 Loop Detector Input
Vehicle loop detector inputs are provided through a connector on the rear panel of the unit. This can be used to
trigger customer-greeting messages stored locally in the display with the presence of a vehicle or some other event.

5 Mounting Options
Delphi offers several mounting options for its family of OCS products. These include wall mount, menu board
mount, and integrated speaker post configurations.
5.1
Wall Mount
The OCS is equipped with mounting holes on the rear of the enclosure to accommodate a mounting bracket for
direct wall mount applications. Custom bracketing can be designed to meet special customer requirements.
5.2
Menu Board Mount
Custom bracketing is easily designed to accommodate a variety of menu board mounting options. Delphi has
previously integrated OCS’s in menu boards manufactured by Everbrite, LSI, Howard, RiteWay and Cal Neon.
Minor modifications to existing menu boards may be necessary to allow for sufficient ventilation.
5.3
Speaker Post Mount
The speaker post is fabricated from durable powder coated aluminum and has been certified with audio systems
provided by HM Electronics, Panasonic, and 3M. Due to the conduction cooled design of the Delphi OCS, there are
no fans in the speaker post. This eliminates any problems associated with fan noise interfering with the audio
system. The speaker post for the Model 9200-150 (15.0” LCD) unit is shown below.
