October issue #2 October 28th 2013 Halloween by Brandi B. Halloween is the day when scary movies come out like Halloween, T he Shining, and Night of the living dead. Many costumes that you will see this Halloween come from these movies and many other scary flicks. jobs. T hese houses must be avoided at all costs! Ever wonder why parents are checking their kid’s candy? It is because evil people taint the candy so it can harm you and make you sick. So please follow our advice this Halloween. Always trick or trick in a group. Also, never take unwrapped candy. Make sure you have an adult with you when you go trick or treating especially as you go up to a house. If you follow this advice, then you will have fun this Halloween and enjoy tons of awesome candy! GMS MONTHLY GMS B RI DGE PROGRAM T rick or treating is when kids say trick or treat at someone’s house and get candy. T rick or treating is very fun, but can be scary and even make you sick. People are giving out all different types of candy this year including Reese’s Pieces, Kit-Kat’s, and Hershey bars. I have heard stories of students receiving candy like Skittles, M&M’s, Nerd Sticks, and Crunch bars. There are those mean people who give out pennies, raisins, toothbrushes, granola bars, and pens from their Picture by Elijah Spiller Squishy Squinkies by Bryan G. This is all about a toy called Squinkies. They are soft, squishy, and colorful. Also, they come in different shapes and sizes. My favorite is the squirrel that comes in many different colors such as blue, green, red, orange, yellow, and pink. There is a store called Five Below you pay $1-$5. You can buy toys, games, and movies at Five Below but I love Squinkies. I have 37 Squinkies. I like to collect them and even put them on top of my pencils. When I was talking with Ms. Friedlander who is a physical education teacher and cross country coach, I found out that it’s a sport that involves running long distances. The Gaithersburg Middle School team consists of 42 runners that each run 1½ miles. Dirty running shoes. Photo taken by: Noah Hartman She also told me that there is a total of 4 meets and we have already had 3 of them against Ridgeview, Redlands, and Shady Grove middle schools. Our next meet will be against Lakelands. When I asked her what players we should watch this year, she replied ecstatically, “All of them!” The Cross Country Team practices on TuesdaysThursdays. Come out and watch a meet! Art by Elijah Spiller History of GMS by Matt D. Gaithersbur g Middle School was built in 1960 and was renovated/modernized in 1988. The total acres of land used by the school is 22.8 and there are 49 rooms for teaching. T he current capacity is 924 students. T he future capacity is 924. I think the history of this building is really interesting because it is such an old building. T his buildin g has been around for 53 years. We could improve the structure by repairing the damages in this building and we can clean up the grounds and make sure that the structure of this building is looked after for a good period of time. The history of the structure is old and it is amazing that the buildin g itself is still standing and in good condition. It might have took a year to build this amazing structure and to have made it the most awesome school it is today. As ti The front of the awesome Gaithersburg Middle School. Photo by Noah Hartman Girl’s Softball Team by Matt L. I want to spread the news about the GMS girl’s softball team. Ms. Diggs said before the girl’s softball team plays the games they practice batting, throwing, and game situations. Ms. Diggs said how they work as a team, they encourage each other when they make good plays and cheer each other up when they make mistakes. I asked Ms. Diggs why she likes to coach softPage 2 ball and she said because it teaches you sportsmanship and it’s a good workout. Gabe is the 1 girl who said she will play next year if she can. Gabe (who was interviewed on 10/11/13 at lunch) said her favorite part about being part of the GMS girls’ softball team is that she is able to talk to friends and help them out. Come out to watch the girl’s softball team this year. G MS MO NT HLY Why You Should Buy a 3DS! By Noah H. For those who have nothing to do when you’re going on a far trip during the upcoming holiday season, I recommend buying the portable gaming system the Nintendo 3DS. The 3DS has lots of stuff for you to do even if you don’t have any of the new games (and you will love the games). The 3DS has an application on it called Street Pass. You and someone else with a 3DS connect and play games together including puzzle swap and Mario Kart Spot pass is the wireless connection to the internet and you can go on the Nintendo shop and browse the internet. Face Raiders is a free game that comes with the 3DS in which you take pictures of the faces of people and use the camera to shoot the faces down. The 3DS camera allows you to take pictures of your friends and you can even record videos with it. If you do buy some games, the 3D function makes the game look like it is almost real. So if you ever get bored when traveling in the car away from home, buy a 3DS along with a few games and have fun. A 3DS . In addition to being the PE teacher for the Bridge program, Mr. Britton is the boy’s softball team coach at GMS. Mr. Britton hopes his players will play in high school. If you have never been to a game let me tell you about it. First you have to warm up your body and then they play against other schools. Mr. Britton enjoys the friendly competition and working with the kids. He teaches them good sportsmanship and how to communicate with each other. Come out and watch the boy’s softball team this season. Batter up! Photo by Noah Hartman COFFEE CORNER! By Darby Johnson The Viking Venti is located in Ms. Migyanka’s room, 702. By Riker Bucci The Halloween season is upon us, so there’s nothing that I want to do except play scary video games on my Xbox 360. There are some very spooky games out there and this article will discuss a few of them. Fear, Slender Rising (I-phone), Left for Dead, and The Last of Us are all scary and intense games that I have played in the past. The very first game I played was Left 4 Dead I think you should get this game because it has a lot of zombies. There is also this game called Slender Rising for your phone or I-pad. This is a game where you are so supposed to find clues and Slender Man pops out of nowhere and scares you. If you look at him your screen will go all fuzzy kind of like a TV when it is not working. You need to find clues to where he is and if you find all the signs you win. Fear is a great game that will definitely give you nightmares. The final game is The Last of Us. This is a violent game about surviving the zombie apocalypse and it is very similar to Left for Dead. In conclusion, all of these games are perfect for playing during the Halloween season. Don’t be surprised if you won’t get any sleep after playing these frightful games! THE COMICS!
