Project Information
1.1 Introduction
The Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Company Limited (RGHPCL), is a public limited company established
in 2011 AD to harness country’s hydropower potential at a reasonable rate with the maximum
utilization of resources (both financial and technical) available in the country. The Company is
promoted by the Chilime Hydropower Company Ltd. It has successfully commissioned and brought in
full operation of the Chilime Hydroelectric Power Plant of 22.1 MW capacity since June 2003 AD.
RGHPCL is planning to develop Rasuwagadhi Hydroelectric Project (RGHEP) of capacity 111 MW.
RGHPCL has planned to manage its capital requirement from debt and equity under the debt: equity
ratio of 50:50. Financial closure has been made for the debt part of the project from the Employees’
Provident Fund (EPF) under the long-term loan agreement. Similarly, the equity part will be managed
with 51% promoter share and 49% public share.
TheProject is located in Rasuwa District of Bagmati Zone of the Central Development Region. The
project is accessible by the Kathmandu -Trisuli - Somdang road at a distance of 130 km to the north of
Kathmandu and could be reached in 5 hours drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. The construction of
road between Syabrubesi to headwork site of the project at Rasuwagadhi (almost 16 km) is completed.
The Project is a run-of-river type scheme having the capacity of 111 MW with the design discharge of
80m3/sec at Q40exceedance and available gross head is about 168m. The source river is BhoteKoshi
(Trishuli) which flows down from Tibet, China entering Nepal at Rasuwagadhi reaches down to
Trishuli in Rasuwa district. The headworks site is located about four hundred meters downstream from
the confluence of Kerungkhola and Lendekhola, which are the Boundary Rivers of Nepal and China
(Tibet). The total headrace tunnel length of the project is 4203 m up to the surge shaft. Tail water from
the powerhouse will be release through the tailrace tunnel to main river course about 564 m
downstream of powerhouse site.
1.2 Hydrology
The Trishuli River is one of the major rivers of SaptaGandaki Basin which drains the Western
Development Region of Nepal. The Trishuli Basin is located in between latitudes 28o 41' and 27o 45' N
and longitudes 85o 07' and 85o 50' E. The total catchment area of Trishuli River at the confluence with
TadiKhola is about 5624 km2 and may be divided into two parts. The upper catchment having an area
of about 3170 km2 lies in Tibet and is a mountainous arid valley behind the Himalayan region. The
river valley runs north to south and lies above Elevation 1800 m. The river is known as BhoteKosi in
this upper catchment, which is then known as Trishuli ganga in the lower catchment after having been
joined by other tributaries.
The drainage area at the proposed intake site is about 3300 km2 and at the proposed powerhouse site is
about 3350 km2.The average gradient of the river in between the weir site and powerhouse site is about
3.26%.The average annual precipitation over the entire Bhotekoshi basin is estimated to be about 1000
mm.
The long term mean monthly flow in the project area reveals a maximum of 216.40 m3/s in August and
minimum 20.60 m3/s in March.
Mean monthly flows at weir site are as indicated in table below based on the gauging station data of
Syabrubesi Gauging Station collected from 1994-2003.

individual desanding basins of an average length of 125 m each will finally be merged into a single
point to connect the headrace tunnel.
Waterways of the project comprise of 4203 m long headrace tunnel with a 6 m dia. fully concrete lined
finished circular section. It includes a restricted orifice surge shaft with a diameter of 16 m and height
60.0 m; 313.0 m long underground steel lined penstock (vertical shaft and horizontal tunnel ) of
4.80m~2.50 m dia. finished section.
The underground powerhouse of size 60m x 14.0m x 27.0m consists of three vertical shafts Francis
turbine each of 37.0 MW installed capacity. About 25 m downstream of powerhouse cavern a
transformer cavern of size 90 m long, 12.0 m wide and 10.50 m high is planned to place step up
transformers. Finally, the tailrace tunnel of length 564 m will dispose the plant discharge into
Bhotekoshi River just upstream of the suspension bridge located below the Dalphedi village. On the
tailrace tunnels coming from the units, vertical gates are installed which will be operated from the gate
chamber. The gate chamber will be connected with the transformer cavern at the downstream.
1.4 Power Transmission
Generated power from the Rasuwagadhi Hydroelectric Project (RGHEP-111 MW) will be evacuated
through 10 km long "132 kV d/c Bear" transmission line shall be constructed from the Project to
Chilime Hub Switchyard located at the Chilime VDC, Headworks of existing 22.1 MW Chilime
Hydropower Plant.
1.5 Power and Energy Outputs
With the design discharge of 80.0 m3/s and the available gross head of 167.90 m the installed capacity of
the project is 111 MW and the total annual sellable energy 613.875 GWh. The annual energy generation
will be 639.453 GWh. The overall outage of 4% is considered to compute sellable energy and the plant
factor is found to be 66.50%.
