INTRODUCTION
Introduction
The portable key charger is an instrument conceived in order to satisfy the user requirements.
Thanks to its reduced dimensions, its simple connections and its friendly use, it is a necessary support for the modern users in the vending machines market.
The Fast Charger is powered by four rechargeable batteries. The reduced consumptions
of the key charger permit a long operating range. The 16x2-character LCD display guarantees a simple and clear reading, while the 17-key matrix keyboard makes the use
easy, direct and friendly.
The high quality of the materials represents an additional value and a guarantee of life
for the product and of fall and shock-resistance.
CAUTION: to use your Fast Charger Key Charger correctly, it is essential to
follow the instructions contained in this manual. We recommend that you
read every section carefully before setting the key charger in operation, so
as to prevent inappropriate operations that could cause damage.

Display
The Fast Charger display has three different levels of brightness:
• 100% of brightness when it operates with wall-type power supply;
• 50% of brightness when it operates with batteries;
• economy level. When the battery charge of the Fast Charger drops under a
definite threshold, the display switches off automatically, permitting thus to use
the energy saved only for the operations concerning the keys and the cards.
E.C.S. CL 64KB Data-Key
With the Fast Charger Key Charger is supplied the E.C.S. CL 64 KB Data-Key. It is a key,
equipped with an internal clock, which can make more than 400 recordings in the
standard recording mode. By means of a Personal Computer, the K4U Analyzer
Terminal and the KDatiPlus software, it is possible to display the data recorded, print
them and save them to a .TXT or .XML file if necessary. These data can then be
processed with a management software.
Accessories
E.C.S. CL USB Data-Key
The E.C.S. CL USB Data-Key has the same features of the E.C.S. CL Data-Key as far as
the use mode and the memory capacity is concerned. Its peculiarity is the USB
connector, which permits a higher suitability for data transfer from the systems to the
PC. KDatiPlus supports the USB Data-Key beginning from release 2.30. By means of the
KDati software rel. 3.0 and following ones, instead, it is possible to export the
recorded data in EVA-DTS format.
E.C.S. CL Softkey 256 KB and USB Softkey 256 KB
The Softkey permits the firmware update in the System. The main feature of this key
is the possibility of updating the firmware in the systems equipped with
microprocessor with Flash memory, without replacing the microprocessor: the
firmware is programmed in the Softkey by using the FlashManager software and then
from the key it is transferred to the microprocessor. The firmware update must be
carried out with the System in rest condition (without sales in progress or crediting of
bills and coins). FlashManager supports the USB Softkey 256 KB beginning from release
1.10.
E.C.S. CL Softkey 512 KB and USB Softkey 512 KB
The Softkey 512 KB/ USB Softkey 512 KB keys are used as a normal Softkey (“E.C.S. CL
Softkey 256 KB and USB Softkey 256 KB”). FlashManager supports the USB Softkey 512
9
®
CHAPTER 1
KB beginning from release 1.17.
Harness for firmware update by means of PC
If during the firmware update by means of Softkey (2÷6 minutes), the operator
removes the key and interrupts the operation, it is necessary to make the update
again by means of PC with the FlashManager software and the “Portable CL Key
Charger Programming Harness” available at any Coges authorized dealer (see para.
“Update by PC”).
Portable printer for data recording
This printer for data recording is used to print the accounting data of Coges systems,
which were read by the Data-Key (see para. “E.C.S. CL 64KB Data-Key”). To connect
the printer to the Fast Charger it is necessary to ask any Coges authorized dealer for
the “Printer connecting harness to Fast Charger” which is described in the paragraph
here below.
Printer connecting harness to Fast Charger
It is possible to ask any Coges authorized dealer for the “Printer connecting harness to
Fast Charger” in order to carry out the print of the data present in the Data-Key by
using the portable printer for data recording. Connect the 2x8 ways connector to the
Fast Charger and the DIN 6-way connector to the printer.

Operation mode
The Fast Charger Key Charger foresees two different operation typologies:
• Charge Key (default);
• Discharge Key.
Charge Key
When operating as key charger the Fast Charger foresees two operation modes: cash
operation by decrease or by increase.
By decrease
In the cash operation mode by decrease, in the Fast Charger is charged a credit (by
means of the Data-Key) which permits to charge the user keys.
In this manual the words "key" or "user key" are used to refer to the E.C.S.
CL User Key, to the E.C.S. MyKey key or to the contactactless MyCard card
in an equivalent way, except where some operating or programming
differences among these supports are expressly specified.
When the credit is used up, in the Fast Charger it is necessary to recharge a new
credit for the cash by means of the Data-Key. With this operation all the transactions
carried out too are recorded and the cash relative to the previous recharge is
collected.
By increase
In the cash operation mode by increase there is no starting credit (cash). In this case
each charge carried out in the keys reaches a total which is present in an inner
counter of the Fast Charger too, in order to always permit a check between the
operations carried out with the keys and the cash accumulated.
Discharge Key
In this mode the Fast Charger operates as a cash registrer: at each sale carried out
with key a special sale counter inside the Fast Charger is increased and at the same
time the same amount is reduced from the key. With the data recording by means of
the Data-Key the Fast Charger counter is reset. All the recorded data can be
transferred and processed by using the KDatiPlus software, which is available on the
website: www.coges.it/download/software.

Programming the base parameters
After switching on the Fast Charger and after inserting the Data-Key it is possible to
carry out the programming of the parameters which represent the base data for a
correct operation of the Fast Charger and a correct configuration with the Data-Key
for data and transactions recording.
Programming parameters of the Fast Charger:
• Machine Number;
• Operator Code;
• Old Op. Code;
• Maximum Credit;
• Decimal Points;
• LocationCode - Section Code;
• Message Language;
• Credit Area;
• Cash Operation;
• FastCharger Op.;
• Programming;
• PIN;
• Total Recharges;
• Date Time.
Machine Number
It permits to enter the identification number of the Fast Charger. It consists of 8 digits
and is stored in the Data-Key at each data recording or cash recharging.
17
®
CHAPTER 3
Operator Code
This parameter consists of 8 digits and, once stored, it permits the recognition of
keys belonging to a management. The code is set in order to avoid that the keys
belonging to other managements can make use of agreements or advantages of other
operators. Before enabling any transaction the Fast Charger checks the key operator
code; if this is correct, it enables the key to the successive operations, if it is not
correct the "**Error** - D-K Operator Code" message is displayed and no operation on
the key will be allowed.
The coding of a new key occurs in an automatic way with the first transaction: from
that moment on its use is bound to the Fast Charger whose operator code corresponds
to the stored one.
Old Operator Code
This parameter, consisting of 8 digits, is used when it is necessary to make a change of
the operator code. It is enough to enter the new operator code in the “Operator
Code” item and the previous operator code in the “Old operator code” item. When
the keys are inserted in the Reader, they are coded with the new operator code.
Maximum Credit
This parameter defines the maximum amount which can be stored inside the key (the
maximum value which can be set is 650,00 Euro).
Decimal Points
It sets the number of decimal digits necessary for the management of the preset
currency (number included between 0 and 3). The data entered by using the Fast
Charger keyboard are shown on the display starting from right to left.
Location and Section Code
It is an identification code linked to the place (location) where the use of the keys is
to be enabled (ex.: hospitals, schools or hotels placed on different floors, where at
each floor can be assigned a different location code both inside the keys and in the
devices which distribute the services).
The Location code consists of 4 digits; before each operation with key a check is
performed on the location code of both the key and the devices which distribute the
service. If the code results to be the same the key is enabled, otherwise on the display
is shown an error message and the key is refused. When the location code of the
device is set at zero (0000) all the keys are enabled to the service independently from
the programming setting; if the location code is set at zero inside the key, it will
result enabled in all the present locations.
The Section code consists of 2 digits, which is a further specification of the Location
code; there are further area subdivisions of the users enabled to the consumptions
with keys. The Section code is enabled only when the Location code was set.
18
PROGRAMMING
®
Message Language
This submenu permits to set the type of language to be used for displaying the
programming menu and the messages on the display of the Fast Charger. The menu
foresees the following languages: Italiano, English, Français, Deutsch and Español.
Credit Area
Coges User Keys are divided into two credit areas; each of them can be managed in an
independent way thanks to the use of different operator codes; usually the first credit
area is used with the payment systems (ex. vending machines), while the second area
is used with the access control systems (OnTime Terminal). This code is used to set
the credit area where the System operates. For example two operators could set the
corresponding systems in order to operate on different credit areas, making thus
possible the use on the same user key of two distinct credits, which are managed
autonomously. This item can have two values:
• 1 = use the first credit area (default);
• 2 = use the second credit area.
Cash Operation
In the setting as Key Charger it is possible to choose between two operation modes:
“by decrease” or “by increase”.
In the decrease mode, inside the Fast Charger is pre-charged a credit by means of the
Data-Key which permits to charge the user keys. When the credit is used up it is
necessary to recharge the Fast Charger with the Data-Key.
In the increase mode the Key charger reaches a total of credit charged in the user
keys in a proper counter. This is reset only when the accumulated cash is collected
and the data recording is carried out by using the Data-Key.
Fast Charger Operation
This programming item permits to set the Fast Charger to operate as Charge Key or
Discharge Key.
When operating as Key charger it is possible to load a credit inside the user keys to
make use of the services which are distributed by key.
When operating as Discharge Key it is possible to use the Fast Charger as cash register
for the normal sale operations with key.
Programming
This parameter foresees two options: “enabled” or “disabled”. The “enabled” option
enables the programming menu of the Fast Charger by simply pressing the P key of the
keyboard; it does not foresee any protection. The “disabled” option inhibits the
programming menu. In this case it is possible to enable it in a temporary way by using
the operator code as password.
19
®
CHAPTER 3
PIN
The PIN term stands for "Personal Identification Number" and is a 4-digit protection
code which enables the use of the Fast Charger.
Generally the PIN is used by the personnel destined for the operations on the Fast
Charger in order to avoid that other people carry out not controlled operations on the
keys. If the code is set at zero (0000) there is no protection.
Total Recharges
This item foresees the display of the total accumulated inside the Fast Charger. The
total has a different meaning if the Fast Charger was set as Charge Key or Discharge
Key.
In the Charge Key setting, what is displayed is the the total charge inside the keys; in
the Discharge Key setting what is displayed is the total of sales carried out with the
Fast Charger.
The total can only be displayed and not changed. It is reset only after the reinitialisation of the Fast Charger (see para. “Resetting the Fast Charger ”).
Date and Time adjustment
The parameter permits to adjust the date and time inside the Data-Key. The date is
displayed according to the European standard (dd.mm.yy).

Firmware update
Update by means of E.C.S. CL Softkey or USB Softkey 256/512
KB
In the System the firmware update can be carried out by means of the 256 or 512 KB
Softkey/USB Softkey. The main characteristic of this key is to permit the firmware
update, without replacing the microprocessor in the Systems equipped with Flash
memory.
•
•
•
•
Transfer the programming to the key by using the FlashManager software (which
is available in the Download area of the website www.coges.it);
insert the Softkey/USB Softkey in the device. The time necessary for update can
change from 2 up to 6 minutes according to the software release and on the
display appears a message indicating that programming is in progress;
at the end of programming on the display appears a message inviting you to
extract the key from the reader;
extract the key and make the System start again.
FlashManager supports the 256 KB Softkey/ USB Softkey beginning from
release 1.10 and the 512 KB Softkey/ USB Softkey beginning from release
1.17.

If during the firmware update the Softkey is wrongly removed from the
reader, the system’s display shows the message: “Error”. In this case it is
recommended to switch off the System and to switch it on again with the
Softkey inserted, in order to continue, if possible, the update operation. If
it were not so, the operation should be repeated by using the PC with the
FlashManager software (see para. “Update by PC”).
Update by PC
The firmware update can also occur by means of portable or palmtop PC connected to
the proper connector of the Fast Charger (see para. “Parts Description”). For the
update by PC the FlashManager software is used, which is available at our website:
www.coges.it/download/software. The update foresees the PC connection with the
Fast Charger by means of the "Harness for firmware update by means of PC". Connect
the 2x8 ways connector to the Fast Charger and the Sub-D 9-way connector to the PC.
