Cover Story: Jessie Hughes thanks members of the SA Police dog squad
for their presentaon on breakup night. They outlined what their jobs in Dog
Operaons involve, the training of the dogs and what jobs the German
Shepherd Dogs do and the difference in what the Labrador Retrievers do (the
only 2 breeds used by the Police in SA). All of their dogs are purchased, there is
no breeding program here. Many members asked pernent quesons which
were answered expertly. Members then had photo and pa ng opportunies
with the Labrador - which she lapped up !!

President’s Message February 2016
I would like to wish all SAODC members, whether you have been
with us for many years or have only just joined, all the very best for
2016. Training has begun again with a rather ‘mixed bag’ as far as
the weather is concerned – raining one week and cancelled the
next due to the heat.
Our AGM was held on Friday 20 November and saw the retirement
from Committee of several long standing members of the club:
President Ruth Johns, Secretary Yve Rixon, Immediate Past
President Bev Dodd and Committee Members Margaret Durant,
John Farmer, Jessie Hughes, Lynne Webster and Marie Wells. On
behalf of the incoming Committee I would like to express our
grateful thanks for their many years of voluntary service to the club
and particularly for their significant contribution during our 60th
Anniversary year in 2015.
The Committee still has a couple of vacancies and, in particular,
needs a Membership Officer and assistance around the club on
training days. If either you or someone you know is interested in
helping out in any way please speak to one of the Committee
members or talk to your Instructor.
The club will be holding an Obedience Trial on the evening of
Saturday 12 March, starting at 6.00 pm, and club members are
always welcome to attend. You never know, you may be inspired
to think about trialling your own dog at some time in the future!
As we head into the autumn months and the weather becomes a
little cooler, we will have greater opportunities to enjoy and to train
are dogs to be both loving and obedient companions. Remember
the SAODC motto of “Kindness and Perseverance”, be consistent
with your training and do a little bit often.
Christine Koch
President.

SAODC Chief Instructors Report
Welcome to all new members and those that have re-joined for another
fruitful year of training. Please remember the club’s weather policies for
hot and wet weather, but also be aware of your own dog’s capabilities.
Even though the club will not train in the evening when the temp is 34.5 or
over at 5pm, if it is below but still hot and your dog does not like the
heat please use your own discretion as to whether you come to training
or not. You do not want your dog to relate club training with a bad
experience.
For those that have graduated out of grade 5 there is Rally training on
Tues mornings and also Agility training on Thurs nights. If you are
interested in either please feel free to come and get more info from me.
Always have fun when training your dog and of course always have fun
playing with your best friend.

FUNDRAISING UPDATE
Bunnings BBQ Sat Dec 4th
A big thank you to all our
volunteers who turned
out on a scorching hot
day in December to run
the Bunnings BBQ and
raise funds for SAODC.
Due to the hot weather
(40+ degrees!!) we didn’t
sell as many sausages as
we would have liked,
although drink sales were
definitely high. Despite
this it was still an outstanding success and around $1000 was
raised for the club.
A special thank you to Deb Reid
for the idea and following up
with Bunnings, making all of the
arrangements for buying mounds
of bread, sausages, onions, drinks
and all the other requirements
and coordinating all of the
people to work on the stall. We
look forward to a cooler day next
time.
Kytons Easter Fundraiser
This year we are doing the Kytons hot cross buns fundraiser
again, on sale are traditional, fruitless, gluten free and
fruchocs buns. Order forms are available in the clubhouse
and need to be completed by March 8th 2016 and
orders will be at the club for collection on March 22nd.
