CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Missouri Western State University in Saint Joseph, Missouri is accepting proposals for a sculpture to commemorate the university’s centennial. Regional, national, and international artists are invited to submit proposals for this permanently installed sculpture. The selected artist will receive a $10,000 honorarium

NEW EXTENDED DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS MARCH 11, 2015 .

Submission details: Work must be original and unique, created specifically for this competition. Final sculpture must be professionally constructed of durable materials that will withstand the elements and be maintenance-free for generations to come. Please attach three images (drawings, 3D models, or photos of maquettes) per submission that clearly show a front and back view. Artists may submit up to three (3) proposals for consideration, but each submission must have a minimum of three images attached.

Please give all dimensions for the artwork. There are presently no restrictions on size.

The installation method for each sculpture should be welded tabs or similar easy-install method.

Selected artist is responsible for transportation of the artwork to the installation site. The

University is responsible for all costs for materials and workmanship for the initial installation of the artwork, including site preparation, plinth, and cleanup. Once installed, the sculpture will become the property of Missouri Western State University.

Work must be suitable for outdoor installation as follows:

• Able to be structurally secured to a concrete pad.

• Capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions (high winds, below zero temperatures, heavy rains, ice, snow, storms, etc.)

• Fabricated and finished with durable, non-hazardous materials.

• Maintenance-free.

• Appropriate for an active pedestrian environment, with proper consideration given to the safety of the audience.

The public unveiling of the sculpture and reception will take place September 15, 2015.

ENTRY CRITERIA:

Application will be through http://www.callforentry.org only. Find the application by clicking on the green button labeled “View All Calls” and then search under the call type

“Public Art” and the state “Missouri.” Click on the call name and then follow the instructions on the website. This service is free to use, but you will be required to set up an account if you do not already have one.

Required information consists of:

1. Information about the artist:

• Current artist’s resume. Resume must include full contact information and may not exceed two typed pages.

• Brief narrative biography. Not to exceed one typed page.

• Artist’s statement. This statement should describe your general approach and past work. Please do not exceed one typed page for this statement.

• Work samples. Submit up to 6 jpeg images that represent your body of sculptural work and any previously completed sculptural commissions.

• References. Please list three professional references, including complete contact information (name, address, telephone number and email if available). The listed references should have a good knowledge of your work and your capacity to execute projects similar to the one advertised. Please do not exceed one typed page for this list.

2. Information about the proposed artwork(s):

• Narrative description of the proposed artwork(s), up to three submissions per artist. This should include, for each proposed artwork, proposed title of the artwork, a discussion of the imagery, style and relationship of the sculpture to the university and campus; a discussion of the materials, finishes, size, techniques, electrical requirements if applicable; and anticipated method(s) of installation.

This description is not to exceed three (3) typed, single-spaced pages for each submitted artwork.

Work must be suitable for outdoor installation as follows:

• Visual documentation of the proposed artwork(s). Digital renderings or drawings of the artwork to scale, as it would be viewed in situ by the public, with relevant location landmarks indicated, or digital photographs of maquette(s) (with a minimum of three views) are required for each submitted artwork. Submit alternate views or details of the artwork as necessary to convey an accurate impression of the proposed finished product. Please do not submit more than 9 images total, regardless of the number of artworks you are submitting for consideration.

ENTRY PROCESS:

1.

All entries must be fully completed and submitted for this exhibition through

CallForEntry.org (CaFE) by March 11, 2015.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Entries will be critiqued on artistic merit, creativity, public safety, and durability in an outdoor setting .

Submitted proposals will be evaluated on the following criteria, listed in order of priority:

• Artistic Merit: the aesthetics, creativity, concept, content, craftsmanship and approach of the artwork and the desirability of the artwork for the context of

Missouri Western State University’s centennial

Feasibility: the technical feasibility of placing the artwork within the site and context of either Location A or Location B (see images and map), and the likelihood of the successful completion of the project within the indicated time and cost parameters

Durability and Public Safety: The sculpture must be made of high-quality materials that can withstand the natural elements of the Midwest for generations to come. Consideration will be given to designs that deter theft, vandalism, and climbing and that require no maintenance.

*Finalists will be selected and requested to submit maquettes to the committee for final selection.

Deadline for entry: March 11, 2015

Notification of finalists on or before: April 30, 2015

Final selection on or around: May 11, 2015

Install final sculpture: September 8-12, 2015

Public unveiling and opening reception: September 15, 2015

__ $25.00 non-refundable fee paid through the CafE website. There is a limit of three (3) proposals submitted per artist.
