Programme Information
Doctor of Philosophy &
Master of Philosophy
INTRODUCTION
As a research student at the Institute, you will follow a programme
of study under the guidance of a principal supervisor and a
supervision panel. At the start of your programme, you will draw
up a plan for your research in consultation with your supervisor
for completion of your thesis within the period of registration
for the degree. Your work plan and training programme will
be reviewed annually in the light of your research needs and
progress.
The research training programme at HKIEd consists of four
core courses. The core courses provide a broad coverage
of the central skills and ethical and methodological issues of
research in education, social sciences, humanities, languages
and linguistics, and creative arts and culture. The courses,
workshops and seminars provide the opportunity for you to
become part of the Institute’s larger research community. You
will be able to meet and discuss your work with students and
staff from different academic departments and learn more about
the research taking place at the Institute.
MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION
The medium of instruction and assessment is English.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
PhD
A Master’s degree (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised
university; or a Bachelor’s degree with first class honours (or
equivalent qualification) from a recognised university.
MPhil

studies are first required to register provisionally for the degree
and their registration will be confirmed after successfully
undertaking a Confirmation of Candidature. The Confirmation
of Candidature is expected to be taken after 12 months of
study. This confirmation process provides an opportunity for
the students to submit and obtain recommendations on a plan
for the structure of their research programmes, describe the
investigative programme and identify the range of expertise
necessary to complete the research.
Application for upgrade from MPhil to PhD will be considered
after confirmation of candidature and completion of the
coursework requirements.

unique, innovative and comprehensive postgraduate training.

INTRODUCTION
At no time in recent history has a region witnessed such
tumultuous economic, political, and social transformation as
has Asia. Driven by the enormous growth in China’s economy
and the remarkable historical transitions in Japan, South
Korea, and Taiwan, Asia is home to some of the largest and
most dynamic economies in the world. At the same time,
Asia remains a region of great diversity. The continuing
challenges of poverty, inequality and unequal development,
rapid urbanization, competition for scarce energy resources,
environmental degradation, and the fast changing contours of
geo-political power, also make for a series of policy problems
that require new, innovative, and bold institutional and political
responses if Asia’s success is to be sustained.
The Master of Social Science Education in Greater China
Studies is designed to explore these issues and equip students
with a wide base knowledge and set of analytical skills that can
assess these trends, interpret their likely consequences, and
inform potential solutions. As part of its core objectives, the
Master of Social Science Education in Greater China Studies is
designed to equip students with the tools necessary to become
effective observers, analysts, and advisors to government,
business, and civil society organizations.
This programme aims to meet the needs of the teachers, nongovernmental organization (NGO) workers, human resource
people, project managers/ administrators, and editors/
publishers who are working in Greater China and Asia.
PROGRAMME AIMS
This programme aims to enrich and update students’ academic
knowledge and strengthen their research/pedagogical
repertoire in the studies of Greater China from multi-disciplinary
and comparative perspectives. After graduation, students will
find their unique competitiveness in research and education
institutions, think tanks, media, NGOs, consulting companies,
as well as the private sector.
