Mid-America Council
2015 Leadership Training Session
April 24, 2015
Each year the Mid-America Council holds a regional Leadership Training Session (LTS). The oneday workshop focuses on leadership development of IMA members. A portion of the program
discusses leadership for the local chapter. However, the majority of the day is geared toward
professional leadership and current accounting and finance issues. These programs provide
practical information that attendees can use on the job or in their community leadership positions.
The biggest attraction is the ability to exchange ideas and experiences with fellow professionals.
Student members also gain the opportunity to learn more about the business environment in a nonclassroom setting from professionals already in their future careers.

Karen is an entrepreneur, a former assistant controller at a large non-profit, an Adjunct Professor at Villanova University, a gifted public speaker, and an author,
including the book Grow Your People, Grow Your Business, and now assists small business owners with brand identification, strategy creation and mentoring at
RedKnight. She notes that leadership is about exerting your influence in order to achieve a desired goal or outcome. The leadership powers you employ to get the

Brian Koref, CISSP, is the Sr. Director of Information Security at a leading Silicon Valley corporation, where he is responsible for defining and managing the
Information Security program. Brian has more than 15 years’ experience in information security. He began his career as a Computer Crime Investigator for the
United States Air Force, during which time he tracked down hackers attempting to penetrate government systems. Following his military career, he accepted
various security administration, engineering and architecture positions at Veritas Software, Symantec and The Automobile Association of America, before
managing the Information Security departments for large companies to include KLA-Tencor and Informatica.
Brian discusses shares his experiences that contribute to an organization’s ability to effectively protect data systems and information.
