Course: SPA201.
Office hours: MWF 12:00 to 12:45.
MWF 12:50-1:50.
Begins January 20th, ends May 6th
Instructor: Margarita Yauman.
Final Exam: May 11, 8:00 to 10:30 am.
Course description: This course is an intermediate level Spanish designed for students who have taken
the courses SPA 101/102. They will develop more advanced the skills: speaking, reading, writing and
listening their Spanish as well as appreciation of the cultures of Spanish speakers.
Required material: Textbook !Arriba ! Comunicación y Cultura, Sixth edition, Zayas-Bazán, Bacon, Nibert.
Online workbook: MySpanishLab. Course ID: ….
You should plan to study, each week, about three hours outside of class. You must spend some time with
the material in order to learn it.
Grading:
Attendance and participation (20%): You are expected to attend every class ready to listen and
participate in the activities. Texting and other cellphone use and unrelated talking in class, and excessive
absenteeism for which there are no documented excuses, will lower the grade for these components. A
maximum of three absences will be allowed before your absence affects your grade. In case of missing
class, it is the responsibility of the student to complete assignments and homework.
Homework (10%): You will complete exercises through MySpanishLab. All web-based homework must be
summited by the class hour on the specified due date, regardless of class attendance.
Partial exams (50%): You will have five exams, each one at the end of each chapter.
Final exam (20%): A review of the five chapters.
Grading scale:
A (93-100).
B (83-86)
C (73-76).
D (63-66)
A- (90-92).
B- (80-82)
C- (70-72).
D- ((60-62).
B+ (87-89)
C+ (77-79)
D+ (67-69).
F (0-59).
Academic Integrity: Westminster’s policy on academic integrity can be found in the latest version of the
student handbook or on the College’s website. This policy will be strictly enforced, you should familiarize
yourself with it thoroughly.
It is generally assumed that we will treat each other with respect. Rude behavior, disruptions, cell phone
use, will result in an invitation to leave the classroom and return only when the work has been completed.
The following schedule indicates the chapters from which the assignments and class activities will be
drawn, and when tests will take place. MySpanishLab exercises will be indicated on the online calendar.
