PRESS RELEASE
CryptoGuard VPN with removable encryption board
New hardware platform enables user-friendly operation
and exchange of the encryption system
Aachen, 6 September 2006.- CryptoGuard's new hardware platform now provides the
easy removal of the built-in encryption board. The VPN box can on demand be
approved as „Verschlusssache nur für den Dienstgebrauch“ (VS-NfD), comparable
with „For Official Use Only (FOUO)“, and as „NATO restricted“. The encryption is
based on IPSec or on a VPN mode which is specifically suited for fast satellite
connections. The migration of a network from plaintext to encryption can be realized
without interrupting the actual operation.
A new hardware platform was developed for CryptoGuard VPN that enables the removal of
the encryption board (CryptOn-Board) and thus the separate transport of box and board. By
this, the hardware can be replaced fast and above all securely if necessary.
The compact-flash card (CF) is also removable. It contains the software and in some cases
the configuration data and the logbook as well. It can be exchanged if the board fails or the
sensitive data is to be removed without having to transport the complete hardware.
The previous version CryptoGuard VPN 4000 is
approved as „Verschlusssache nur für den
Dienstgebrauch“ (VS-NfD) in Germany, comparable
with the US classification "For Official Use Only,
FOUO", and as „NATO restricted“. There are only
a few VPN solutions on the market that have been
developed in Germany and were granted this
classifiication. Theencryption system is mainly used
by German public authorities and the armed forces.
The new CryptoGuard VPN can also be approved
as „Verschlusssache nur für den Dienstgebrauch“ (VS-NfD) on demand.
The special feature of CryptoGuard VPN 4000 is that the hardware-based encryption can
also be founded on other security standards than only the internationally recognized IPSec
standard. CryptoGuard VPN can additionally be configured and operated in a specific VPN
mode, without encryption enlarging data packets. By this, CryptoGuard VPN 4000 is better

suited for the use in fast satellite connections than comparable products with IPSec mode.
Satellite connections are ever more often used nationally and internationally due to their
independence of local infrastructures and their flexibility. This is why the CryptoGuard VPN
encryption box is attractive for authorities and enterprises in other EU and NATO countries
as well.
CryptoGuard VPN can be integrated without interrupting the current network operation: The
VPN boxes are just installed between router and terminal equipment and individually started
while the network is being operated as usual. It is thus possible to comfortably migrate from
plaintext to encryption without network standstill and without having to make changes in the
network configuration.
