NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TRAINING FOR STANDARDIZATION
TRAINING PROGRAMMES ON STANDARDIZATION
Standardization is the process of developing and implementing technical standards.
Standardization can help to maximize compatibility, interoperability, safety, repeatability, or
quality.
Standards play an important role in facilitating trade and commerce within and between all
countries of the world. They advance the national economy, benefit the health, safety and
welfare of the public, and assist and protect consumers. These standards are developed by many
bodies, at the sub-national, national, regional and international levels, usually by consensus
processes.
Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the national standards body of India, is involved in standard
formulation activity and have well defined rules and procedures for developing standards. It also
complies with the WTO Good Practices on standard formulation and adoption.
In order to create awareness amongst various stakeholders on the aims, objectives, benefits
principles and the process of standards development and to the significance of participation in
standardization process, NITS conducts a number of training programmes on standardization.
Following are the training programmes organized by NITS on Standardization:
Training Programme for Standards Developing Organizations
The term Standards Developing Organization (SDO) generally refers to the industry- or sectorbased standards organizations that develop and publish industry specific standards. These
organizations develop standards for a specific sector application.
This five day training programme is provided to various SDOs with an aim to enable them to:
1. Understand the concepts of standardization.
2. Understand the need for having a single standard nationally.
3. Harmonize the standard making procedures of various SDOs.
4. Provide guidance on writing standards in a uniform manner, thereby facilitating their
adoption / recognition if necessary, as Indian Standard.
5. Develop better understanding of the need to participate in national/international
standardization process.
Training for Technical Committee Members
For formulation of Indian Standards, BIS functions through the Technical Committee structure.
The committee structure of BIS seeks to bring together all those with substantial interest in
particular project, so that standards are developed keeping in view national interests and after
taking into account all significant view points through a process of consultation.
The basic aim of this two day training programme is to provide training to members of Technical
Committees to enable them perform their roles and responsibilities in standards development.
Through this training the experts participating in Technical Committees are expected to develop
understanding of how the standards development process work and how standards are to be drafted and
are especially useful for those participating in standardization work in the technical committees at
national and international level.
Workshops on Specific Standard(s)
It has been the constant endeavor of BIS to develop of standards based on wide consultation and
involvement of all stakeholders concerned and in the effective implementation of standards.
These workshops are organized as an effective means of disseminating information and facilitate
implementation of standards or for developing standards /opinion building on standards. These are
intended to cover subjects that are critically important such as on health, safety and environment.
