Introduction
Swansea is an innovative waterfront city at the
heart of the wider Swansea Bay City Region. Access
to cutting-edge University research and expertise,
a high quality of life and outstanding natural
environment create a unique business location.
Major investments by both Swansea University and
University of Wales Trinity St David are generating a
step-change in research and learning capabilities
and academic/industry collaboration – further
enhancing Swansea’s position as a City of Innovation.
Swansea City Centre
Complementing this, ambitious plans to transform
Swansea City Centre through new commercial,
housing, retail and leisure developments will
reinforce its role as the economic driver for the
Swansea Bay City Region, creating jobs and growth.

Transforming Swansea City Centre
To create a strong retail, commercial
and leisure destination…
A greater mix of city working, living and learning is
being created, supported by a diverse retail and
leisure offering and improved connections between
the Centre and Waterfront.
The Kingsway and Orchard Street area of the city is
being re-defined as an exciting new business district
of employment and residential areas.
Oxford Street, City Centre
Further phases of the distinctive High Street
Urban Village mixed-use development will provide
additional opportunities for city living and working,
and act as a counterpoint to the Kingsway and
Orchard Street business district.
The Quadrant and St David’s area is the retail and
leisure heart of the city, which will see major
developments that support vibrant day and
night-time economies, and the creation of new
streets and spaces that improve pedestrian
linkages to the Waterfront.
Princess Way, City Centre
The City Waterfront area is a landmark location
and will become a new commercial and leisure
destination in Swansea, in combination with
additional residential and community uses.

Castell Howell Foods Ltd
Castell Howell Foods Limited was incorporated in 1988 and is a privately owned company based at Cross Hands,
Carmarthenshire, primarily wholesaling to the catering trade by delivering direct to the customer and through its Cash
and Carry in Carmarthen. It now serves the whole of Wales as well as the west of England. It has distribution depots in
Cross Hands, Merthyr, Avonmouth, Blaenau Ffestiniog and Chirk near Oswestry, together with the Cash and Carry in
Carmarthen. Castell Howell currently employs over 400 employees and has over 4,000 customers including large hotels
and pub chains as well as cafés, pubs, coffee shops, conference centres, outside caterers, mobile caterers, schools,
universities and hospitals. It stocks a range of over 10,000 different products. It runs a fleet of approximately 100 mixed
temperature delivery vehicles.
The relocation of the distribution hub in 2007 from Carmarthen to Cross Hands food park provided an additional circa
50,000 square feet of storage space and enabled the company to expand and to take on additional contracts. As well
as expanding their traditional customer base, Castell Howell has developed its own brand products through dedicated
manufacturing and processing facilities in its associated companies, Celtica Foods and Farmfresh Fillings. Celtica Foods
has recently built and commissioned a 35,000 sq ft purpose built meat processing unit alongside the the Castell Howell
distribution depot in Cross Hands whilst Farmfresh produces cooked hams, sandwiches, sandwiches fillings, pies and
cakes from its base at Cross Hands food park. Celtica Foods, through Castell Howell’s participation in the Celtic Pride
premium beef scheme, procures over eighty cattle each week direct from Welsh farmers which are processed at the
new Cross Hands facility.
By providing a combination of quality products and service at a competitive rate, the company has enjoyed consistent
growth, achieving a turnover of £89m in 2014 and has now become one of the major commercial employers in the
Swansea Bay region. A significant number of Welsh food producers have also benefited from this success, as the
