General
Information
Use one of two methods outlined below
to determine which silencing solution is
optimal for your application.

Calculate exhaust gas velocity by dividing
the flow rate by the pipe area:
exhaust flow rate (CFM)
silencer inlet pipe area (ft2)
Reference the pressure drop tables in the
silencer spec sheets located on pages 2.3
and 2.7. Using the calculated exhaust gas
velocity, find the corresponding estimated
pressure drop on the table. If you have
selected a silencer that achieves your
silencing level requirements at an acceptable
pressure drop level, you have identified the
silencer that is right for you!
Silencer recommendations following
Method 2 are based on 1" Hg restriction and
are only estimations. Considering
uncontrolled variables such as piping
systems, tail pipe loss, sudden
expansion/contraction, flex, etc., it is
recommended that you select a unit one
size larger or a low pressure unit (page 2.8)
if either (a) the back pressure exceeds 1" Hg
across the silencer, or (b) the back pressure
is more than 50% of the allowable back
pressure for the exhaust system (use the
smaller of the two).
Exhaust Flow Rate Estimation
If exhaust flow rate is unavailable, estimate
through the following equation:

E = 0.85 efficiency for naturally
aspirated engines
= 1.2 for engines with scavenging blower
= 1.4 for turbo-charged engines
T = exhaust temperature; if unknown,
use 900°F for diesel and 1,200°F for
gas engines
C = 1.0 (two-cycle engine)
or 2.0 (four-cycle engine)
Method 2
If your pressure drop requirement is 1.0" Hg
(approximately 13.62" H2O) or less and
exhaust flow rates are known, use the quick
selection table below to select the most
appropriate silencer without performing any
calculations at all!
What Else Should I Know?

A exhaust flow rate (CFM)
Regardless of the method you choose, the
engine’s exhaust flow rate (CFM) may be a
mystery. If this is the case, use the above
titled equation Exhaust Flow Rate
Estimation. After estimating the exhaust
flow rate, proceed with Method 1 or 2.
Universal brand exhaust silencers provide
optimum performance for all applications by
offering silencers crafted for four different
attenuation grades. Due to the variability of
different applications, performance levels
are most accurately shown as broad range
“expected attenuation bands,” which are
based upon typical conditions. These bands
will not define the exact insertion loss for a
specific application, since insertion loss is
influenced by engine size, type, speed and
unsilenced noise levels (see product spec
sheets for attenuation, back pressure and
design details).
Notes
Keep in mind that silencers are not designed
to support their weight from the inlet or
outlet tube, or support other components of
the exhaust system, such as stacks. For the
most efficient operation of all silencing units,
proper mounting attachments are required.

Note: Find the lowest flow rate greater than or equal to the engine flow rate at the required silencing level. Exhaust
flow rates are based on end-in end-out silencers. Refer to product spec sheets when determining side-in or middle
side-in back pressure. Velocity should not exceed 15,000 ft/min regardless of the allowable back pressure
(10,000 ft/min for spark arresting silencers).

Drains are standard on all models with a 9"
O.D. or larger. Models 26" or smaller have a
coat of high heat-resistant paint. Models
larger than 26" O.D. have a rust inhibiting
primer under high heat-resistant paint.
Maximum operating temperature is 1,250°F
for aluminized units. Heat-resistant paint
maintains its properties up to 900°F on
aluminized steel and 1,100°F on mild steel.

“Puck”-style silencers are low-profile
silencers that not only fit in the smallest
enclosures, but are also perfect for portable
power, marine, or other applications where a
“tight fit” is a concern. The single inlet
models are available in residential, critical
and hospital attenuation grades. Critical and
hospital models also offer a low skin
temperature (LST) design for exceptionally
small compartments and enclosures to keep
radiant heat to a minimum. The LST
configuration incorporates an extra layer of
packed acoustic/thermal insulation that
reduces heat and noise, eliminating the need
for expensive external wraps. The aluminized
steel designs far outperform the comparably
priced carbon steel competition by offering
higher corrosion resistance, greater
maximum operating temperatures, less
weight and an overall longer silencer life.

Standard spark arrestors are designed for
universal application with a minimum of
restriction on the engine, and are ideal as
add-on units to existing exhaust systems.
The arrestors’ light weight and small size
reduce stress and vibration to the rest of
the exhaust system. Typical applications
include logging and construction
equipment, agricultural machinery, over-theroad trucks, airport equipment, forestry, and
military vehicles.
How Can You Select the Right
Spark Arrestor?
If the diameter of the spark arrestor inlet is
as large as the exhaust pipe, restriction
generally will be within engine guidelines.
However, to be sure, check the exhaust CFM
of the engine against the CFM rating of the
spark arrestor. Some applications (e.g. turbocharged and two-cycle diesel engines) may
require larger arrestors and an adapter to
complete the installation.

About the Blankets
Universal brand insulated blankets are
constructed of three unique plies:
Inside Ply is made of a knitted stainless
steel wire mesh
Middle Ply is a Type E fiberglass insulation*
Outer Ply is made from siliconeimpregnated fiberglass fabric
High-temperature resistant silicone provides
significantly longer life and improved
resistance to abrasion, flexing wear, tears
and punctures. The heavy-duty inner-lining
fabric is resistant to oils and acids/alkalis,
as well as being flame retardant.
All blanket edges are machine-stitched
using high grade fiberglass thread and
fastened with permanently-mounted
stainless steel hooks. The blankets are laced
in place “boot-style” with stainless steel tie
wire, resulting in a custom-made “glove fit.”
*Type E fiberglass insulation is designed for insulation
within high-temperature equipment. It is manufactured
from chopped fiberglass fibers and is free of resinous
binders, which enables its use in the high-temperature
ranges. Type E insulation is flexible, lightweight and
will not compact under vibration.
