RENEWED REFUGE
Upon formulating a plan for the redesign of the
featured abode, which sits on a charming threeacre peninsula in East Hampton. architect Nick
Martin wanted to create "the ultimate modern
beach house." For the aesthetic. Martin played
off the original structure's traditional shingle style
and added a clean contemporary twist with two
sprawling additions, one of which is pictured at
right. Inspired by the home 's natural setting-it
sits among an expansive tract of wetlands and
indigenous plantings-he incorporated a material
palette of sandblasted limestone, rich mahogany
flooring and extensive steel detailing. "The
refreshed design opened each elevation, allowing
for improved natural light and panoramic views,"
notes Martin, "enabling us to conjure an enhanced
level of architectural caliber and efficiency."

poetic a proach
When Robert Bristow and Pilar Proffitt
designed their first furniture piece in 1999, they
didn 't envision a complete line or a full-service
interior design and architectural firm to follow.
Yet just a year later, the second part of the
equation, Poesis Design-from the Greek root
word meaning "to make " -came to fru ition.
Crediting her experience in architecture as
the enduring inspiration behind their furniture
collection, Proffitt says, "there is a palpable
framework underlying each piece. " For the

INTERPRETATION
"Desig n has the power to break boundaries," states
