Its main attraction is the Souq Al Dhalam, or "Market of Shades“. It’s labyrinth of alleyways lit by lantern, unveils local antiques, gold, silver, and traditional handicrafts, while the scent of frankincense fills the air. Seafood is a major contributor to the local economy, and Muscat’s Fish Market is where the fishermen converge daily to sell their catch as they have been doing for centuries. KEMPINSKI · 32 Oman Outings ~ Wadis A wadi is a dried up riverbed found in the mountain valleys. Wadis come into their own after heavy rains, when the rivers start running again and the vegetation is restored. However, some wadis have yearround running water, with deep, cool pools in which it is quite safe to swim if the currents are slow. WADI AL SHAB means, "gorge between the cliffs". Only a two hour drive from Muscat, the wadi is entered via a small ferry and it has cool pools of water all year round. Nizwa, the largest city in the interior province, was the capital of Oman in the 6th and 7th centuries. Today it remains one of the most popular tourist attractions with its historical buildings and imposing fort built in the mid 17th century. It is famous for its bustling souq where tourists can buy exquisite copper and silver jewellery, as well as Omani Pottery for which the souq is famous KEMPINSKI · 35 Oman Outings ~ Diving & Dolphins Oman’s marine life is diverse and plentiful, due to their being no commercial fishing in the Sultanate. The best months to explore the underwater world is from April to July. Five species of turtle frequent Omani waters and four of these – Green, Loggerhead, Olive Ridley and Hawksbill nest on Oman’s beaches. Turtle watching is now one of the most popular highlights to visit Oman. In order to protect the environment, special measures have been taken to control the number of visitors. Dolphins continuously migrate in the warm waters of the Gulf of Oman, and dolphin watching is a popular half day outing.
