Over the course of a year students are afforded the following services: • 6-12 free professional theater performances – including free transportation to and from the performances and free childcare • 8 goal-setting, in-class workshops with a Project SUCCESS facilitator • 30 after-school counseling and support sessions • 1 or more college or community tour • 8 phone calls or other communication from Project SUCCESS staff • 2-3 other experiences, such as participating in an all-school play production, a trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area or in a local volunteer opportunity Other specialized programming we offer includes 1) Project SUCCESS produced musicals and performances 2) summer trips to the BWCA and 3) all-school field trips to the theater. State and national college tours are an important part of this one-on-one assistance. In the 2005-06 school year, Project SUCCESS staff took 307 high school students on college tours in Minnesota, Illinois, New York, and Wisconsin. One-on-One Assistance, College Tours and Special Programming High school students need attention and assistance planning for their future. So we offer a one-on-one counseling program in after-school sessions. Our facilitators help students with reviewing and filling out applications for college or financial aid, finding job opportunities and seeking the resources necessary to make life after high school a positive, productive experience. Theater Experiences We believe in the power of theater to illuminate the world. We use professional theater as a springboard to inspire students and to help them look at the real issues they face. With the help of our 25 professional theater partners, we offer students and their families the opportunity to attend between six and twelve theater experiences a year. These are not school field trips, but tickets to evening and weekend performances. We work with theaters to choose the appropriate plays; we coordinate every element of the experience including providing transportation and childcare, and facilitate post-play discussions with the performers and directors. The curriculum guides young people through a variety of unique exercises, experiences and discussions to help them look at their interests, their strengths and desires for the future. We then work with them to set specific goals and take particular steps toward those goals. We call this process “dreaming with your eyes open,” and 90% of participating students report taking a positive step toward achieving their goals. Working together with teachers and school administrators, our curriculum has become an integral part of English/Language Arts classes, ensuring that our program reaches each child in every school. Students participate in a workshop once a month for a total of eight workshop experiences per student, per year. Goal-Setting Workshops Our staff of professional facilitators lead workshops based on specificallydesigned curricula developed for each grade level. Last year, we delivered 2,276 workshops to more than 7,000 young people in nine Minneapolis/St. Paul middle and high schools. We realize the teenage years are critical ones for every young person. That is why our program is designed to serve each student for six years— from middle school through high school. The program is comprised of these components: Goal-Setting Workshops in the Classroom, Theater Experiences, One-on-One Assistance, College Tours and Special Programming. All components work within the Project SUCCESS philosophy, which is to provide a non-judgmental, supportive setting where students can speak out and be heard, and where they learn to assess themselves and their options regarding their future. All program components are designed to help students gain confidence in creative thinking, decision making, goal setting and resourcefulness while developing the skills to plan their future. In the first year of Project SUCCESS programs in St. Paul, 70% of the middle school students indicated they made a special effort to attend school for Project SUCCESS activities. When asked who “assisted them in future planning,” 88% of Minneapolis high school students rated Project SUCCESS ahead of friends, counselors and teachers and second only to parents or guardians. 3/4 of the English teachers believe that Project SUCCESS had a positive impact on students’ relationships with teachers. Project SUCCESS students are introduced to live theater, often for the first time. Nearly 98% of Minneapolis high school students called this a valuable experience as did 100% of teachers and 99% of parents. Nearly 80% of the students indicated that Project SUCCESS “helped me understand classmates who have different perspectives and experiences” and 74% of the students said the program “helped me understand myself better.” More than 1/2 of Project SUCCESS alumni from Minneapolis high schools said that the program “has had an impact on what I have been doing since graduation.” More than 85% of Minneapolis middle school students in Project SUCCESS indicated the program “helped me think about my future” and nearly 3/4 of high school students said Project SUCCESS “helped me to create a plan for after graduation.” 82% said they “were inspired and motivated to pursue my dreams.” Selected Evaluation Highlights Julie Zelle, Board President Adrienne Diercks, Executive Director In the spirit of dreams coming true, Here’s to an inspiring and great year! The future holds exciting things for Project SUCCESS. Over the next few years, we will embark on a dream of serving more young people and their families. The schools need us. The kids need us. And we are ready to say yes. We know that we can grow our program while maintaining the extraordinary quality and integrity of our services that have brought us to where we are today. We look forward to reporting great success to you in 2008. Project SUCCESS is a growing force of committed individuals who truly believe that anything is possible, and our goal is to inspire students to know this for themselves. This was our original mission, and it remains steadfast to this day. At Project SUCCESS we, talk about dreams all the time. Having former students come back and want to work with us is a dream come true. These former students-turnedstaff have expressed that the role Project SUCCESS played in their lives was so essential that they are now compelled to play that same key role in the lives of current students. We think this is a sign that we are doing something right. All young people are in need of inspiration, no matter what their circumstances. We are so honored to have the opportunity to meet them during these critical years and play some part, large or small, in their journey towards a successful, positive life. This past year was rich with such experiences. Not only did we get the chance to catch up with former students, but we hired three of them! One was a summer intern, and the other two are now full time Project SUCCESS staff—as committed as the rest of us to making a difference in the lives of young people. While this is only our 2nd year publishing an Annual Report, we are now in our teens as an organization—and some of the teens we once worked with are now young adults out in the world. It is always such an honor when these former students stay in touch, fill us in on their journey in the post-high school world, and let us know how we impacted them as younger people. As we enter our 14th year in partnership with our fabulous students, families, schools and theaters, we are filled with gratitude for the opportunity to get to know so many amazing people every year, every month, every day. We are similarly grateful for the community at large, who continually supports us as we walk into each year with an undying passion for inspiring young people to dream big and take action on those dreams. $ 1,509,823 Total Revenue $ $ Fund Balance: End of Period Change in Fund Balance Expenses Revenue and Other Support $ 276,000 52,500 125,110 115,249 13,752 111,168 15,712 643,825 146,460 80,731 65,729 146,460 $ $ $ 6% Fundraising 82% Program Services 11% General Operations 1% Curriculum 45% In-Kind Contributions 1% Program Service Fees (5,763) 65,729 71,492 $ 1,359,079 $ 136,808 $ 1,105,318 $ 94,324 $ 16,894 $ 5,735 $ 1,353,316 $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ 9% Special Events 1% Government 1% Schools 7% Individuals 14% Foundation 22% Corporate 28,588 94,317 64,729 $ 1,481,235 Total Expenses Fund Balance: Beginning of Period $ 168,426 $ 1,208,201 $ 87,417 $ 17,191 $ – General Operating Program Services Fundraising Communications Evaluation and Assessment Expenses $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ Corporate Foundation Individuals Schools Government Special Events Program Revenues In-Kind Contributions Revenues 327,000 205,286 112,653 12,800 26,459 134,512 12,491 678,622 120,784 $ TOTAL LIABILITIES AND FUND BALANCE 26,467 94,317 $ $ LIABILITIES FUND BALANCE 120,784 $ ASSETS 6-30-2005 Financial Position Dreams Coming True 6-30-2006 FINANCIAL REPORT LETTER TO OUR PARTNERS Julie Zelle Minister/Community Leader Tom Trow Nonprofit Consultant Trudy Richter Partner Richardson, Richter and Associates Todd Macgregor Vice President Merchandising Target Sheila Livingston Director of Community Relationships Guthrie Theater Elise Linehan Community Leader Ted Koenecke Corporate Vice President, Administration Lifetouch Inc. *Founding Partner Actors Theater of Minnesota, Alchemy Theatre, Great American History Theatre, Guthrie Theater,* Hardcover Theater, Hennepin Theatre Trust (State, Orpheum and Pantages), Illusion Theatre, In the Heart of the Beast Puppet & Mask Theatre, Interact Center - Performing Arts Program, Theatre de la Jeune Lune, The Jungle Theater, Theater Latté Da, Minnesota Dance Theatre, Minnesota Opera, Mixed Blood Theatre, Mu Performing Arts, Pangea World Theater, Park Square Theatre, Penumbra Theatre, The Southern Theater, Stages Theatre Company, SteppingStone Theatre, Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater, The University of Minnesota Department of Theatre Arts and Dance and Young Dance.
