Piano Juries
All music students registered for studio piano lessons must play a jury at the end of each
semester. Exceptions will be made in semesters when a student plays a full solo recital or
concerto, or advances to the final round of the concerto competition. In those cases the
performance will be graded by a faculty committee and the grade counted as the Jury
grade.
Non-music majors may be excused from playing a jury at the discretion of the principal
teacher.
STUDENTS REGISTERED FOR 2-CREDIT APPLIED PIANO LESSONS
Undergraduate and graduate students registered for 2-credit applied piano lessons will
play a jury at the end of the semester.
Juries will consist of 2-3 contrasting pieces, to be determined in consultation with the
applied teacher.
All pieces performed on the jury must be memorized; if part or all of the exam is not
memorized the student is allowed to play the exam for a grade, but it will not be possible
to get an “A” on the exam.
First-year students and graduate students have technical requirements for each semester
in addition to repertoire.
Fall semester: Scales, 4 octaves, hands together, all major and minor keys (harmonic
form)
Spring semester: Arpeggios, 4 octaves, hands together, all keys, major, minor, diminished
and dominant seventh.
MUSIC STUDENTS REGISTERED FOR 1-CREDIT APPLIED PIANO LESSONS
Undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled in the music department and
registered for 1-credit applied piano lessons will play a jury at the end of each semester of
study.
Juries will consist of 2-3 contrasting pieces, to be determined in consultation with the
applied teacher.
At least one piece performed on the jury must be memorized; if none of the exam is
memorized the student is allowed to play the exam for a grade, but it will not be possible
to get an “A” on the exam.
At both the undergraduate and the graduate levels, there will be technical requirements,
corresponding to the number of semesters of private piano study at Butler a student has
been enrolled in.
Undergraduate level:
First semester: Scales, 2 octaves, hands together.
All major keys and white key minor scales (harmonic form)
Second semester: Scales, 2 octaves, hands together.
All major and minor keys (harmonic form).
Third semester: Arpeggios, 2 octaves, hands together.
All white keys, major and minor.
Fourth semester: Arpeggios, 2 octaves, hands together.
All keys, major and minor.
After the fourth semester, technical exercises will be required at the discretion of the
principal teacher.
Graduate level:
Fall semester: Scales, 4 octaves, hands together, all major and minor keys (harmonic
form)
Spring semester: Arpeggios, 4 octaves, hands together, all keys, major, minor, diminished
and dominant seventh.
In certain cases, a student may be excused from playing a jury at the discretion of the
applied teacher. These will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
NON-MUSIC STUDENTS REGISTERED FOR 1-CREDIT LESSONS
Undergraduate and Graduate students who are not in the music department and enrolled
for 1-credit studio piano lessons may be excused from playing a jury at the discretion of
the applied teacher.
Technical and repertoire requirements will be assigned at the discretion of the applied
teacher.
