Shady Grove Radiology Expands Interventional Services
Germantown, MD (May XX, 2010)—Advanced medical imaging is revolutionizing a wide variety
of medical procedures that previously required major surgery and hospital stays. Minimally
invasive, image-guided alternatives to major surgery for various diagnostic and treatment
purposes belong to a medical subspecialty known as interventional radiology.
Shady Grove Radiology, a practice providing a comprehensive range of hospital- and
outpatient-based medical imaging services in Montgomery County, has strengthened their
interventional radiology team with the addition of Dr. Alex Wurm.
Dr. Wurm received his interventional radiology training through a fellowship at the University of
California at San Diego, which is recognized nationally for leadership in interventional radiology.
With Shady Grove Radiology, he will apply his in-depth vascular and interventional experience,
including procedures for:

„

„
Blood vessel access for intravenous antibiotic treatment, chemotherapy, or hemodialysis
Image guided biopsies, which provide minimally invasive options for cancer diagnosis
Filter placements in the inferior vena cava to prevent blood clots from entering the lungs
Catheter placements for liver drainage
Various interventions for the urinary system, such as stent placements to bypass
obstructions
“We’re delighted to welcome Dr. Wurm to our practice,” said David J. Rothfeld, M.D., of Shady
Grove Radiology. “His depth and breadth of experience will be a significant enhancement to our
ability to serve patients in Montgomery County with minimally invasive, image-guided vascular
and interventional procedures.”
Dr. Wurm, a long-time native of the Greater Washington D.C. area, is a graduate of the
University of Virginia School of Medicine. He completed a residency in radiology at the Eastern
Virginia Medical School, and a fellowship in interventional radiology at the University of
California at San Diego. Dr. Wurm is board certified in diagnostic radiology by the American
