The Torch of Truth A publication of Southland Bible Institute and Camp Evangel 238 W. Southland Drive Ashland, KY 41102 Design by Dr. Delma Lowery Volume I, Number 1 Summer 2013 REACHING FORTH “. . . Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” Philippians 3:13 Southland Bible Institute started over 70 years ago to meet a specific need. Christian workers in this area believed that a Bible Institute was needed to train those who had been reached with the Gospel so that they, in turn, could reach others. The original campus was located 17 miles southeast of Pikeville, KY at Wolfpit with a full-time training program geared to training dedicated men and women to be workers for Christ both at home and abroad. Some of those Christian workers belonged to a ministry called Southern Highland Evangel. It was started in 1932 at Biggs, KY, just a few miles from the original Southland campus, with missionaries visiting schools, starting Sunday schools, and starting a camp ministry to reach the children of rural Appalachia. The camp later moved to Pounding Mill, VA, but the original church is still located in Pike Co., called Justiceville Bible Baptist Church, and is currently pastored by a Southland alumnus. Over the years, both ministries have worked closely together and have the same doctrinal and philosophical positions. In today’s world, smaller mission organizations are struggling with the rising cost of administration and with replacing those faithful servants who have spent their lives serving the Lord. This became the case recently with Southern Highland Evangel and their board of directors began to search and pray for a workable solution. In order to lower costs and to avoid duplicating administrative tasks, they asked Southland Bible Institute to become the head of Camp Evangel and Southern Highland Evangel was dissolved this year. It is a natural fit between two ministries with the same focus and goals. We can reach the campers with the gospel and then provide those who desire to learn more with “Training that Prepares for Service.” Please continue to pray as we go through this transition that the Lord will provide much needed workers for both ministries, as well as the support they need to be effective workers for Him. Pray for the finances needed to support the day to day work of each ministry as we are “reaching forth” each day to serve Christ. GRADUATION 2013 Showers of Blessing “A faithful man shall abound with blessings; but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent.” Proverbs 28:20 Joshua Dale Dyer — Huntington, WV—Bible/Christian Education Josh came to Southland following in his dad’s footsteps. His dad, Herbert Dryer, graduated in 2011 and had a very positive influence on Josh’s life. In his graduation speech, Josh mentioned lessons learned while at Southland under various instructors, but credited his father with being the biggest influence in his life and under whom he learned the most. Josh has been a faithful student and a joy to have at Southland. He was an honor student, and has helped in so many other areas to accomplish tasks that needed to be done. Josh is planning on spending the summer as head counselor at Camp Evangel before furthering his education to pursue a teaching degree. STYLE 2013 STYLE is an intensive week on the Southland campus for high school students. It is meant not only to challenge them toward spiritual growth and Biblical knowledge, but also to give them a sample of college life.
