Interfaculty Language Learning Centre Direzione Didattica e Servizi agli Studenti LEVELS Breakthrough Level LANGUAGE Hours of lessons at CIAL ENGLISH The A1 level comprises levels A1-a and A1-b. From the 2007-2008 academic year these levels will be replaced by the Macmillan English Campus or MEC, an online interactive package of English courses which enables students to study on their own. This form of learning does not include traditional classroom learning with a teacher but a native speaker tutor is available to help students with any language problems they may have. A1 To reach the exit A1 level students need to follow 100 hours of lessons at CIAL, ALL OTHER which entails attending the following courses (of 50 “academic” hours or 37.5 effective LANGUAGES classroom hours each): (except - A1-a Italian) - A1-b ENGLISH Waystage Level A2 SYLLABUS (based on the Common European Framework ) Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help. To reach the exit A2 level students need to follow 50 hours of lessons at CIAL, which entails attending the following course (of 50 “academic” hours or 37.5 effective classroom hours): - A2 Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). A blended course consists of 33 “academic” hours or 24.75 effective hours of traditional classroom lessons, integrated with the Macmillan English Campus, an interactive online package of courses. Threshold Level B1 ALL OTHER LANGUAGES (except Italian) ENGLISH Vantage Level To reach the exit B1 level students need to follow 150 hours of lessons at CIAL, which entails attending the following courses (of 50 “academic” hours or 37.5 effective classroom hours each): - A2 - B1-a - B1-b B2 - A2 - B1 For GERMAN only students need to follow 300 hours of lessons because A2 and B1 levels comprise the following levels: - A2-a - A2-b - B1-a - B1-b (of 50 “academic” hours or 37.5 effective classroom hours each) To reach the exit B2 level students need to follow 250 hours of lessons at CIAL, which entails attending the following courses (of 50 “academic” hours or 37.5 effective classroom hours each): - A2 - B1-a - B1-b - B2-a Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both - B2-b concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, wellstructured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices. Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.
